https://gamerant.com/google-game-console-march/

Technology giant Google is already heavily involved in gaming. The company runs the Google Play store (used for downloading mobile games on Android devices), and last year it unveiled its game streaming service, Project Stream. However, Google may be preparing to kick things up a notch if a newly sent out invitation is any indication.

Today, Google began sending out invites to an event that takes place in March. On March 19, 2019 at 10AM PST, Google will be hosting a Google Keynote event at GDC (Game Developers Conference). The invite asks invitees to “Gather round,” adding that “all will be revealed” at this event.

While Google’s invite is vague, some are questioning whether the company could unveil its long-rumored games console at this event. A report from eight months ago suggested that Google has invested a lot of resources into some sort of gaming hardware. The anonymous sources with knowledge of Google’s plans even revealed that this console could potentially be a big rival to Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox.

The same report also said that Google’s games console would incorporate streaming. Just a few weeks ago, the company stated that it has big plans for Project Stream in 2019. It seems unlikely that Google would host a Google Keynote just the sake of rolling out Project Stream to a wider audience. The big plans may well involve this rumored hardware, leaving many wondering if it could be a fully digital games console that has no disc drive and only offers game streaming.

Another big question about this Google hardware is what games it could offer. When Google launched the first Project Stream only one game was available–Ubisoft’s ancient Greece adventure, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Google has apparently been courting game developers in a big way since GDC 2018, but it’s not known who it has finalized a deal with.

There’s also the issue of exclusivity. Google isn’t the only major player that’s working on its own streaming service. iPhone maker Apple is rumored to be working on a “Netflix of games,” online retail giant Amazon is said to be developing its own streaming service, and Microsoft’s streaming service Project xCloud was announced last year, too.

Competition often leads to exclusivity deals, as platform holders use the strength of the games they offer as a key selling point. This often means that consumers lose out, as they are unable to play all of their games on the platform of choice. At this stage, it’s unclear whether Google‘s streaming service or its potential console would have exclusives, but it is something to watch out for.

Finally, an easier way to give google your data regarding what games you play, and how many times you looked up your characters skirt.

Anyone interested?

I had never actually heard of Project Stream before, but wasn't that already tried by someone else and it ended up dead? I'm sure there is a bigger market for it now with so many games not having physical copies anymore and faster broadband speeds.

Project stream went well didn't it ?

They did the latest assassin's creed game on it for free for testing streaming within a Chrome browser.

It's been a while since we had a new entrant into the hardware market so I'm not against the idea 100% but I just don't see how they could have enough exclusive content at this stage to make it a compelling offer.
If they can somehow make a device that can play PC software like a better version of a Steam Machine I may bite.

It'll be PC streaming plus play store games, and no one will care

Plus, if you want to play mobile-platform games at four times the price, there's always the Switch, amirite?

Seems like all the big players are gearing up for a game streaming war.

What are you talking about we'll at last be able to play great Play store games such as Generic connect 3 gems clone number 23874, and Shity Nearly a Strategy Game with Micro-transactions! But on the big screen! Where I'm sure they will also be using your PC as a crypto miner.

I'd be more than happy with a streaming service for £8 a month (the same price as Game Pass) that let me play the Total War games.
Maybe with similar graphical settings as if the game was on a PS4 pro which I think should be easily achievable. I'm not hoping for similar performance as a £1500 gaming PC rig but that would do me just fine.

Could happen but I doubt it'll be anything resembling a typical console.

Something like the Chromecast but with a separate controller seems more probable. As people have said, the games service would likely be the Play Store and access to this Project Stream via some sort of Netflix style subscription service.

Until internet connections are good enough to match the experience of playing through dedicated hardware then it will remain totally uninteresting to me but I'm sure it'll appeal to a mass market. £60 for a low-profile streaming device + controller plus a monthly subscription, as opposed to £300+ for a dedicated piece of hardware with games costing £40-50 a go will definitely help it sell outside of the enthusiast market.

I'd anticipate Sony and Microsoft will probably launch similar models of their next system at some point as an alternative to dedicated hardware, wouldn't be at all surprised to see the likes of Amazon joining in too.

Once Sony and Microsoft are offering full streaming services you can imagine console hardware being completely decoupled from them. I don't think it's mad to imagine something like a chromecast that has both a PlayStation and an Xbox app on it, just like you can have Netflix and Hulu on the same device at the moment. Remove consoles entirely and then everything is essentially a PC game, with exclusivity held between the competing store fronts and the only hardware being the controllers. Nintendo stay out of it by being a dedicated handheld where hardware and offline play is still a necessity.

I think that's the kind of future Google et al are anticipating.

Yeah I think is about right, it makes it easier for the game makers as they only need to make one version and the gamer picks their favourite provider (s) like with movies and tv shows. Nice and simple.

But what about the console wars  .
The soldiers standing in lines at midnight launches will be out of work and have nothing to do, do you have any sympathy for them?

You heartless monster :x .

Sony will not do that unless it’s their own console/hardware.

They are charging a fee for developers to make games for their console.

So it’s nothing I’ll worry about.

PS Now doesn't put up new games until later so there's no loss of fees.

It doesn't yet, but I imagine Sony plan to grow the service, especially to compete with Xbox's game pass. While I'm over-predicting things, I'll add that even with the above I think consoles would probably still exist on top of Sony also producing their own streaming-stick-thing hardware and supporting their app on others, and through that app they would still make a lot of money as either a storefront and/or as a subscription service.

The current situation is that PlayStation offers a streaming service that includes PC, and Xbox offers play anywhere titles that similarly are not restricted to Xbox hardware. With things like project stream on top of that it definitely seems like a trend.

I've got no interest in supporting platform holders who don't invest in creating great games (I'm looking at you too, Microsoft), so I'm out.
