PostGR and your momentous life events
by Superking » Tue Nov 16, 2021 9:01 pm

I've seen a couple of threads floating around today talking about GR memories and nostalgia and thought "Wow that's a hot bandwagon I ought to capitalise on!"

So here it is;

I got married the weekend before last and that was by definition a momentous life event, which got me thinking? How many momentous life event's have we collectively experienced throughout the life of GR and its spin offs, predecessors and subsidiaries? What life events have you experienced in your GR lifetime? How many times have you got married? Had a child? Got divorced? Got married again? Adopted a pet? Learned to drive? Lost your virginity? etc. etc. Were you thinking about GRcade when it happened? Can you believe how fuckng old we have got together? How can I contribute to the cost of your honeymoon Superking?

Please provide your answers to these questions below and I would say keep it light/ avoid the really dark momentous life events unless you really want too (I'm kind of going for that warm nostalgia feel with this as you recall the precise moment you thought quick to GRcade, when your baby was born or whatever the life event was).

P.S. No I wasn't thinking about GR on my wedding day. That would be weird

In order:

Bought my first home
Got married
Had a kid
Got a university degree
Became an Irish citizen

The only time I thought of GR was when my son was conceived.

Did a lot of travelling (mostly Japan but also Taiwan and Hong Kong)
Got married
Got divorced
Had a mental breakdown which I got through thanks to a supportive family and an amazing mental health nurse
Lost (as in they passed away) 7 pets
Finally started university as a mature student
Discovered the concept of asexuality and realised it applied to me. It answered a lot of questions in my life and made me a happier person

The only involvement grcade had in any of those was the mental breakdown when I posted some pretty scary stuff and then just disappeared from the forum. Members cared enough to track me down in real life and check that I was ok. I forget exactly who called me but it was really touching at a time when I was really struggling. I'll always be grateful that a community where I rarely posted and mostly lurked cared enough to check in on me. TBH, it's a lot more than I got from people who I'd known for years in real life.

Please do not post this in the "No Context" thread

if we can cast the net a bit wider to include ONM, it's been with me in some shape since 2006 - 15 years. I'm 29 now so that's over half my life, wasted posting online. GCSEs, A Levels, moving to England from Northern Ireland for Uni, failing a law degree, graduating from a politics and philosophy degree, moving to Scotland, getting onto a grad scheme at Vodafone, moving back to England because they conned me, and eventually/currently becoming a senior analyst in the container shipping industry. Along the way I've seen lots of bands lots of times (Metallica x19 and Muse x15, among others), become a worlds level Pokemon Cards Doer (competed in Nashville 2018 and Washington DC 2019), and a whole heap of other stuff I don't really like talking about openly (that once maybe was open knowledge on previous boards!)

Interesting to think of how it's always been there, really. I sort of moved over to Twitter for my social medias and became much more of a lurker once SONM was in its twilight years, a process accelerated by the Pokemon Cards hobby (I'm one of the biggest accounts in the community, which admittedly is not a high bar), but I still like to read things that are happening here even if I don't contribute as actively as I once did.

Basically my entire life events have happened during GR times. I think I signed up in 2003 and nothing of note happened before BWT.

Given that I’ve been on these boards since I was 16, it’s worth saying the only momentous occasions that I wasn’t on here for was seeing Jurassic Park and my first wank.

Different days.

I hope those both weren't on the same day.

If only so at least I know you had two moments of happiness outside of GR.

Different days. I spent the runtime of Jurassic park screaming ‘WHATS HAPPENING’ at my first erection.
