Did you buy it?

I've downloaded F1 23 now it's on gamepass, just not played it yet. Keen to give the single player story mode again as I didn't play the last one.

Sadly not available on consoles, considering the rest of the DLC has come to the current consoles it’s hopefully a matter of when and not if! I’ll be buying it as soon as I can though.

Saw F1 23 was on Game Pass, thought it was marginally better than F1 22 really

I didn't realise consoles didn't have parity, ffs :fp: Well I hope you get to play it at least relatively soon

I don't hold high hopes for F1, but I'd like to give it a go.

I think I had just as much fun playing sega rally on an arcade emulator recently as I have on sims. I think I'm in a funny racing game mood. I feel like playing some ridge racer, daytona and so on

I've also spotted my monitor at half price today from a refurbishment place, so have now ordered that and another second hand one from ebay, so I guess I'm going triple screen now :fp:

Well, at least your setup will be finished, even if just for a short while! I just load up Mario Kart the odd time I want something more fun to play, even attempting to focus on sim racing can be mentally draining, all the more credit to those who take part in the 24 hour races really.

Sadly the consoles don't have parity, it's definitely gotten a lot quicker over time but still probably going to be a couple of months. I really hope (as much as it'd annoy PC users) that they leave the Nurburgring till all versions are good to go, can see that being the last DLC released for it, so having it available for all users to enjoy at the same time would be good.

Nordschleife has always been such a great track to spend some time hot lapping. I think it's the feeling of it being a real road, mixed with there always being time to fine everywhere as long as you can take the risk (and deal with it when it goes wrong).

Mario kart

Flatout has always been a favourite, might have to get that going for a bit as it's just great fun plus surprisingly good to drive for an arcade style game.

Finally dipped into the 2:19s (literally by a few thousandths!) round Spa :datass: Moved back to the 2023 Porsche  Still hope we get an updated Aston before the end of support for this game though.

Edit, jumped back in the Aston and set a 2:20.027, so close to getting into the 2:19s with this as well. I’d be really happy if I could consistently lap in the 2:19.

Edit, back in the Porsche (really should just choose a car and stick with it), got it down to a 2:19.872 now, genuinely no idea how some players are doing low 2:15s round Spa

I've found it even more perplexing when you find a YouTube video of someone doing that sort of time, and it's just utterly effortless and drama free. You then go on and try to brake exactly where they do and sail off in to the wall backwards :x

I think some people have pretty trick setups going though which are only suitable for a single lap (cook the tyres and brakes if run for more than a lap). There's always someone faster than you...bastards. Yes I'd try to stick with a car though, it helps to really learn a track I find.

Got my monitors set up last night and had time for a quick go on iracing. It was pretty good but there's a LOT of tweaking I need to do to get it convincing and the FOV set just right. It's a far cry from how simple VR is to use, where you just switch that on and it's perfect.

Yeah, they make it look effortless, I was watching a bit of a race round there yesterday, the race pace was in the very low 2:16s... Just ridiculously quick!

Not that I'll ever have this issue regarding triple screens, but how does the gap between the screens work? Do you overlap them? Or set the FOV so the gaps are essentially blind spots and the lines just match up after the gap? Genuinely no idea how that aspect of it works, as soon as its set up it'll be

That's the other thing, not only getting to that pace but being able to sit around it for a race. I've been in many an iracing session where I am at the top for practice and qualifying and then in the race I just go backwards as I'm not as good at staying at that level or I get done under braking.

Bezels you tell the game about and it jumps the image across them so its like the pillar of your car being there. It's not so bad if the in game pillar sits over it but it'd more noticeable if it's in the middle of the windscreen. You do tend to get used to it but it's noticeable. Going to maybe raise the monitors up to pull them over the wheel base as the closer I can get them, the more FOV I can get. Aiming for 180° and currently it's at about 160°. Shame the logi base is so massive as it might mean the monitors then sit too high, but I won't know unless I try it out. Worse case I just put them back.

I feel like I've made a bit of progress on my overall pace in the last couple of months, feel I can confidently trail brake into some corners, especially in the Aston Martin V8 GT3, but I'd be relatively delighted if I could consistently hit the 2:19s in a race scenario, or any scenario really.

Trail braking can make a really big difference if brake balance is set correctly, but that's something I find quite hard to get right. I've got doing that drilled in to muscle memory so I do it without really thinking, but if the game has a heavy leaning on ABS like ACC then I find it doesn't make as much of a noticeable difference. Some other games you can feel the car really hooking up to and hugging the apex when you're trail braking.

As for pace, I was time trialing on iracing last night and not really getting anywhere consistently, then gave up and just did several 5 laps AI races at the same track with the same car, and by the end I was consistently lapping close to my best time and that's while being around other cars. Maybe it's chasing someone down that helps focus and give some more consistent pace.

Having a reference point for even just braking helps a bit I find, back when I played a load of the F1 games (2011/12), I’d often struggle to build a gap against the top level AI, but starting behind was fairly easy to carve your way through. I do wonder how much the rubber banding of the AI played into this though, I imagine it was a lot. Think 2011 is still my favourite F1 game despite it not being that great compared to a lot of the others they’ve done, one year they’ll ace it again…… hopefully. I think the F1 game needs an entire overhaul to improve, so many issues just carry over from one year to the next.

Still can’t believe I bought F1 22, even for half price it was poor value

Edit, seen GT7 is getting support for a motion rig, that’s pretty neat I guess.

Well I played F1 23 earlier and the graphics are pretty nice. Of course, there's no pc support for multi monitors, so you can only run windowed and have the side screens with loads of distortion and no perspective correction. Handling was alright, very arcade like. I doubt I'll bother playing it much, but I might try out the story mode some time.

I realised I had my side monitors at the wrong angle earlier, so pulled them in to 60° and can now have a FOV of 170° which is great for immersion. Also discovered by accident when setting up an A.I. Race on iracing that you can choose the time of day. Set it to something close to sunset and it looks beautiful, so why is the default at mid-day all the time? It makes it look like a cartoon :fp:

Yeah the time of day settings are really good, sunrise or sunset were always my standard choices, how the game looks is the smallest problem it has really, the handling just isn’t good, it’s not bad but it’s just bang average.

Mean to give WRC EA another go now it’s probably had a few patches, just glad console users have a really good GT sim at the least, doubt we’ll ever see anything close to a sim on console for modern F1 cars unless AC2 has some 2022 cars in there, reasonable chance the 2022 Ferrari will be in there in my opinion.

We’ve still not heard or seen anything of AC2 yet, wonder if it’s going to slip the the end of this year or early 2025 for PC users.

I bought the nordschleife on iracing this morning :datass:

This is the first track i've bought, and the jump in quality between this and the free tracks is pretty big.

Such a great track. Properly bites back just when you think you're doing well too.

Great choice, reckon the Aston will be the first car I take round it when it comes to ACC.

I love how it just feels like a proper road (which it is of course) So it's nice to just drive without the feeling of having to be going full pelt. Kind of like the coastal routes in some games like project cars 2, it's just nice to move through that environment.

Excuse the dogshit naff footage, I was filming replays off screen with my phone to show my mate what iracing is like with the screens (and moving the phone as if oving my head  :fp: ) . I got the start of my first go on the nordschliefe, and you can see they've modelled the real public access point. It's a nice touch. For some reason it doesn't have the mirrors on in replays, maybe it's a setting I've missed.
