I've had a few matches and you can see the Motorstorm DNA in it for sure. It's pretty intense, however my concerns about it being 100% full-on all the time are valid, it can be very hard to see how what you're doing is contributing, plus there is almost no need for an accelerate button as you're almost always flooring it all the time. I'm torn because I want to support a new type of racing game but unless it really takes off on here like the Motorstorm Mondays of old I might not stick with it.

Eurogamer’s opinion is identical to yours. Not sure how that makes you feel.

Wow, you weren't kidding:

Eurogamer wrote:I still worry a little. I worry that the endless chug that Onrush wants to create - you are surrounded by cars, so many of them, absolutely all of the time - may lead, perversely, to a slight flattening of affect. When everything is exciting, is anything really that exciting?

I can totally see why they've gone this way - racing games have a core loop that is essentially the same regardless of if you're playing iRacing or Mario Kart - drive fast, win race. I heard some guys talking in GAME earlier today as I was passing through saying that "car games are boring, you just drive round and round".

For Onrush they've cribbed all the bits from other genres; Titanfall's AI fodder bots to pad out events and making takedowns like getting kills in multiplayer shooters etc. I was also watching a documentary on the iplayer about concept car designs in the 50s and 60s and one of GM's designers said something like about not being able to make too many changes too drastically or else people will not get it and be left behind. In this case I think they've had some great ideas, but personally I'd rather this have been a mode in a more traditional Motorstorm pseudo-sequel than the premise of the whole game.

From what I read of that EG piece, I reckon - with the right amount of tweaking - it’s possible that a more traditional racing experience is possible. gooseberry fool, even if it only means that finishing first is still a thing. Bit late now, obviously. Maybe DLC.

It reminds me a little of overwatch. You get an ult, there are classes and at the end it pats you on the back regardless of performance. I'm getting it just cos it's mad fun but I can see where you're coming from.

I can't find The Crew 2 thread but this video about the "new" upgrade system has put me right off (skip to 8 minutes because of course a youtuber takes forever to get to the point):

So its more of the same but worse; car parts have rarity, perks and will probably be available in lootboxes because ubisoft. I don't want to play "Destiny: The Car Game" however impressive the open world tech is. I get that it's all about dat profit long-tail, but what's wrong with winning money to buy the parts you want? It just diminishes what you're actually doing because you're just thinking about the results rather than the process. This is making Onrush look a lot more appealing simply by the virtue of trying something different at least. Also at the end apparently you have to level up to be able to tune stuff like ride height, the diff, suspension etc.

I never got on with The Crew, so I didn't have high hopes for the sequel to begin with.

New Microsoft racing game alert: Miami Street is out now on Windows 10!

Microsoft Studios has released a new racing game for PC...

:o .

...Miami Street is a free-to-download racing game that presents a cinematic view of the racing, with quick-time events for things like taking on corners.

:dread: .

...To accelerate, you hold down the left mouse button, space bar or anywhere on touchscreens. To brake, release. The car automatically steers through turns, but you have to time your brake and hit the gas at the perfect time to get ahead.

:dread: :dread: .

...There's an energy regeneration mechanic (energy regenerates by one every four minutes, or you can spend gold to refill), and a car repair system. Each time you use one of your cars, it takes one point of wear. Each car needs to be repaired after taking three points of wear via a repair kit.

...

It looks like they're going for a Forza Motorsport/Horizon approach - Dirt Rally is for all the mud masochists while the mainline Dirt series is more broadly accessible.

DiRT Rally is impossible. I managed to get promoted in the Rally section and am unable to win a single race in any of the other race types :fp:

Dirt Rally is very difficult and requires a lot of dedicated practice time. Time, which if I'm honest, I don't think I could realistically commit to a sequel even though I could hold my own in the first game.

Really enjoying V-Rally 4. It's a little twitchy and takes a few races to get to grips with, but once it clicks it's a great arcade rally title. Some of the track design is inspired.

While that looks incredibly dull, As someone with an extremely debilitating disability I kind of like the idea of one button gaming. I just wish they could make something more engaging than that
