Just put an official ranked time trial of the nurburgring and nordschleife combined on, meaning to play a lap then play something else. Ended up spending an hour lapping :datass:

That track plus the porsche is driving heaven, so good.

So, I decided I may as well go for Grid Legends on the Quest store, as it would give me another standalone racing game on the device.

What a load of fun it is. Yeah, it can be a bit blurry in places, but I'm not bothered by that. I'm more bothered by the fact the mirrors are just decoration. Very helpful, although I'm pretty sure turning reflections on will help there. If it even lets me. Changing the settings doesn't really seem to do anything. I wanted the racing line off and to remove the names of the racers that appear when they're close by. Took numerous races for the racing line to finally turn off, yet the names of racers still remained until I'd finished.

Even with those issues, I was still enjoying it and will certainly continue on with it. Just unfortunate there's no offline quick event option, as I think the online of the VR version is also bugged.

Pardon my lack of quest knowledge, but is that a proper vr version then and not a virtual screen in front of you? Cool if it's the former, how have you found it?

Yeah, it's a proper VR experience for when in the vehicles, and it has been a great time. The story mode shows the rise to fame of your driver before the career mode starts, pitting you in different championships and vehicles every event. And it has been great to be right in the cockpit of all these vehicles, right in the pack and able to see them all around me. As a game, it is good fun. Read somewhere on how to improve that bluriness, so I'm sure to start doing better once I do.

Just had my first iracing race against real people in over a year.

Nordschliefe + GP circuit combo :dread: 3 laps.

Yeah that didn't go well

Everyone was being cautious and respectful, and I was taking it easy to just rack up some experience and safety points for my licence. A few people went off in front of me from time to time and I'd pick my way through, until about a half way around the lap where I exited a blind right hander to find someone sideways across the track. I picked their nose side to go through, they shot forward, I immidiately jinked left and they reversed. Too late, I just slide and smashed right in to them, with the person behind me hitting me. I was out. Safety rating dropped as I had to exit the race, meaning I would have been better off not playing at all. What a waste of time

And in contrast, I just had another race on the ring/gp combo where I managed to finish 4th out of 25 (I think). Superb clean racing in C class, everyone is cautious, nobody just sends it where there's no move on, if people spin the just roll backwards to keep out of the way rather than try to get straight back on the line and crash in to you.

A few people were clearly faster than me, so rather than hold them up and risk an incident, I blended out the throttle and let then through...with the devious plan of hoping they would then push and crash. One of then spun at the end of the last lap and I got through :datass:

That track is such a test of concentration. 3 laps racing closely was intense stuff.

Still mean to load up Forza and at least give Nordschliefe a handful of laps before never touching it again

Nordschliefe can't come to ACC soon enough really, such a satisfying yet challenging track regardless of the car you're in.

It's so good. I love how it feels dangerous and could bite you at any point. Makes stringing corners together without binning it thrilling.

Just binned it half way around the last lap :fp: Was running 16th put of 24 which isn't great, but there was a pack of 5 or so ahead of me that I was slowly gaining on, and they were all A and B licenced players, so not too shabby. Got some small licence points out of it at least, even if I did finish last sat in the pits.

This one goes out of rotation on Tuesday I think so I've got tomorrow to do another clean race before it swaps to brands hatch which I don't own.

Such a great track :datass:

I think I now prefer triples to VR for general racing too :shifty: What it loses in depth and immersion, it gains in image clarity, frame rates and peripheral vision.

Should have a couple of free hours tomorrow, so should be able to at least try and be disappointed by Forza’s version of the Ring.

Not sure what awful car I’ll decide to take round it first though, might just go for an MX-5 or something low powered.

Do what I did and cruise round in a Mini. I'm sure you'd be able to beat 7 minutes 30-odd.

I'll end up in the MX-5, it's underpowered but its such a fun car to drive, one of the very few cars I want to own at some point as a daily driver as well.

Think it shows how much my hopes were dashed for it

I will give it a little credit, it can look downright gorgeous when the lighting is just right, the engine sounds are generally decent from what I've heard so it's not a complete failure...... I still think the pre release hype did it no favours, them saying how amazing the new physics engine would be, how everything was built from the ground up when it just isn't the case for a lot of the assets, really is a case of over promising and under delivering at this stage. I'm not saying it might not turn out in a couple of years to be a very competent simcade, but it should not have launched in the state it did.

23rd to 7th must have been a cracking race!

The market is saturated at the moment and anything that comes along has high standards to meet. If you're going to talk about ground up development, coming out with something that's just alright isn't good enough when there's other racers to pick from already.

The online racing in C class has been excellent so far. I'd read loads that the Porsche cup is one of the best series to go in due to the large player count and high standards of driving. It's all been very respectful and how you'd want to race people. Seeing someone gain on you in your rear mirrors but then ease off to sit back and wait for a suitable passing point is so good, as in the rookie tiers you wouldn't get that, it's just gain gain nose alongside no matter what and then accident.

If someone is being held up by me and I'm failing to make ground on the car ahead, I tend to let the catching car go. You can then follow that car and get a bit of tow, plus there's a good chance they'll pressure the car I was trying to get and one of them will make a mistake. Happened a few times, I let someone go and they both then went off gaining me those two places. You can only do that sort of thing when everyone behaves and races properly.

Part of me would love to spend some time with the more "sim" racing games, but I fear that my own lack of experience with real life driving and my general preference for more arcade style racing would put me in a tricky place. I find it really hard to get away from the more "bashy bashy" behaviour that arcade racers allow.

Hell I remember playing Driveclub with you guys here and even when I was actively trying to be more aware of how I drove and not barging people out of the way I still would get in peoples way. Pretty sure there's a clip of Chalky (Though it might be someone else) getting grumpy after a crash I caused somewhere.

But I think getting my wheel set back up and actively trying something more sim-like might be worth a try. Just hard finding games that natively support my wheel these days. Got one of those Hori Racing Wheel Apex things about 8 years ago and most stuff doesn't like it. :fp:

I did play Daytona throught the Model2 Emulator with it. Used it for one of those ARcade Attacks videos I did for the GRcade YT channel. That was glorious fun.

I think for me you've got to enjoy the process of a racing game kicking your arse, and overcoming that being fun for you. Sounds like you'd be interested in trying it out, so maybe look at some less demanding games that will run on your pc and will then be compatible with your wheel.

Half a lap, half a lap in Forza before I just loaded up the standard AC and jumped into the ND MX-5 on that and it’s laughable that a game from 2014, that could be played on the base Xbox One, has far superior handling in the exact same car, especially a standard road car. I could understand some of the higher performance race cars being made easier to drive in a simcade (though, as part of the car pass I have been gifted the Aston Martin Valkyrie and it’s ridiculous, you can’t feel a thing the car is doing  ) but for a road car, the physics should be spot on in my opinion. Constant oversteer in an MX-5 as well :fp: I then jumped in the SF70-H and had a few laps round the Ring in that

Don’t forget to sign the guestbook! Sorry, like and subscribe.

Standard AC could be a good place to start a racing journey, old game so could support the old wheel? Massive modding community around it as well if you did get into it.

Half a lap

I don't know why the handling feels so disconnected in it, you have to drive on what you see and go off remembering inputs from the previous lap rather than actually feeling what's going on.

Oh yeah original AC is a really good shout. Looooads of extra tracks and cars to get.

It doesn’t even feel like a great version of the ring really, loads of the kerbs are far too flat, the version in AC you struggle to use some as they massively unsettle the car, in Forza you can ride them, not that you can feel them of course

While I’ve got the wheel set up, I might do some more laps of the Ring, or maybe jump on ACC and do some laps of Bathurst.
