I'm having a bit of a second wind with racing games, as I realised they are perfect for dipping in for quick sessions, especially on the more arcade/sim-cade end of the spectrum as I do not have time in my life for super-serious no-fun simulators, however "better" they might be. I also redownloaded GT Sport thinking i'd have to start again after I deleted my save when I quit last time, however it found my old save on their servers and redownloaded it, so I can carry on where I left off :datass:.

Might reinstall Driveclub (RIP in peace) to just blast through the singleplayer stuff as well.

If it's f2p what's the catch in terms of monetisation?

I assume you can buy skins for your driver & cart like Fortnite etc.

This is a free-to-play game, and the different ways you can edit your driver and vehicle are virtually bottomless. You can change the character behind the wheel, and each of those characters has their own tree of skins. You equip a car shell, and then change the front or the bumper, or the sponsorship wrapper, and give it a fresh coat of paint. You can even change the texture of your exhaust fumes. Do you want your car to spew nothing but gold coins? KartRider Drift hears you loud and clear. Most of these changes seem cosmetic, but each car, if not the variables within each car, is stocked with a set of statistics that affect handling and acceleration. There can be a meta in KartRider if you look hard enough.

All of this hints at a fairly comprehensive monetization model whirring behind the scenes. The original KartRider leverages an encyclopedia-sized in-game store, and while Choi tells me the company hasn't decided firmly on what its progression infrastructure will look like, I'd expect the same tradition to carry over here. (Choi also hints at a Battle Pass-like system, which should take the bite out of the constant microtransactions, at least a little bit.)

A solid list, although i'm surprised that oddities like Driver SF and Mudrunner made the list, I didn't think they were popular enough.

Absolutely loved Driver San Francisco. Playing the Grid reboot now and as good as the racing is, how can the multiplayer still be so gooseberry fool? All they had to do was copy and paste the setup in the 2008 original....

All Grid offers is Quick Race or Private Race. No options. Did three of them but the massive wait between races made me load Forza instead. Shame.

I imagine anyone playing it is totally NOT a ramming dickhead. I don't bother with online racing anymore because it's an exercise in futility.

WRC 8 looks pretty good. Watched a few vids from racing enthusiasts, many of who says it outshines Dirt Rally 2 in some areas, particularly in how different each environment feels. Will definitely take a look at it at some point once I've saved a few quid.

I picked up The Crew 2 in the Epic sale, £8ish for the "gold" version seemed a good deal, even if it is not the best racing game ever.

Anyone here played NFS Heat? I'm curious about it as it looks like the Underground titles of old.

That's definitely the vibe they're going for - by all accounts it rights the wrongs of the past i.e. very little "story", no microtransactions and an interesting duality between earning reputation and money through doing sanctioned day races and illegal night races with a risk reward mechanic about running from the cops and getting back to your safehouse to bank the extra. The reviews were fairly middling, it's fun but doesn't do much to reinvent the wheel (ha!) Probably one for when it's cheap.

IGN's review concluded with:

While Need for Speed Heat feels a little more like a mosaic of existing concepts rather than something especially trendsetting, Ghost has certainly scraped these ideas from some of the most-loved games in the now 25-year-old series. Heat doesn’t always sizzle but it’s definitely much hotter than I’d expected. This is easily the most impressive Need for Speed game in many years.

Given the recent releases in the series, that last sentence is the definition of damning with faint praise .

Is that on the switch? Are you using buttons for accelerate and brake, or the right stick? I can't imagine digital speed control now.

And as the Gran Turismo thread appears to be totally dead, I'll post this here:

8-) :toot:

That was really tought to get the one lap, probably put about 6 hours in on that track to get it :dread:

Yes its on the Switch, wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it is really! Works surprisingly well even without analogue triggers (although it would definitely be better with them) as you can slightly tap the throttle to improve traction on any surface that isn’t tarmac. I’m currently in the WRC 2 Pro category after skipping out WRC 2 (as I didn’t get an offer from a team so the WRC 2 Pro one was too good to turn down), currently just practicing with the car I’ll be using to get used to it and try out the Monte Carlo stages.

Also that is one hell of a good lap :toot: I’ve not played anywhere near as much of GT Sport as I should have, don’t want to be ‘one of those people’ but I feel it really does miss a proper career mode :shifty: At this stage I don't think we’ll actually be getting a GT 7 on the PS4 either, who knows if the PS5 will get one.
