Would you recommend it? Been after a good Rally game for a while. I can get Dirt Rally and Dirt 4 on Xbox Gamepass but haven't tried them out yet. How would you say V-Rally stacks up against those two?

It's more accessible than the simulation that is Dirt Rally, and no better or worse than Dirt 4 except for the handling which in Dirt 4 is tighter.

If you enjoyed any previous V-Rally games and their more arcade style approach then I'd comfortably say you'll like 4. There's also some great track design throughout.

Ride 3 Eurogamer review. I agree with the author that Ride is a flawed, but enjoyable series. The latest appears to be the best yet

Add me to the list of those who have/are enjoying V Rally 4. My initial impression wasn't the best after a really long installation and update process, followed by the opening video package crashing and locking up the PS4 (which I still haven't seen in full). The graphics are also a bit PS3 and the song that plays on the menu screen ON A LOOP is tedious after, ooooh, the 4th time of hearing it. The rallying itself however is great - really accessible and fun, in a way DiRT Rally (which is still definitely the better game) isn't. I was a bit worried about the handling model at first during the introduction, but once I purchased the Lancia Fulvia and a few other cars it's absolutely fine. Much less twitchy than the 1997 original, heavier than 3 or the various WRC games on PS2, and not as slidy as SEGA Rally on PS3/360. Has more in common with V Rally 2. Generally, it does remind me of rally games of the past in which you can really drift around wide corners and fling the car about more robustly (just like the Colin McRae games of old). It doesn't require the same amount of concentration, and the difficulty setting (which is set on 50 as standard) can easily be changed before every race.

I paid £19 for it at ARGOS with a voucher code (it's currently £24) and at that price I think it's well worth it. It lacks the general polish and sophistication you'd expect for a full price release, but a worthy purchase for those who fondly remember and had fun with rally games in the late 90s to mid 2000s.

I've been wanting to give it a go and this is convincing me it'll be worth while. My wheel is PC and Xbox though so I might wait until I can get it for a good price on PC.

I’ve changed my mind a little about V-Rally 4: I think it’s bloomin’ brilliant. While the graphics aren’t going to be challenging Gran Turismo any time soon, some of the small touches really are great and do an excellent job of making the environments feel alive: the palm trees swaying and blowing about in the rain on the Malaysian courses, birds flying in the sky, mosquitos and flies in Africa, a bullet train whizzing past in Japan, the at times magnificent lighting (it’s not even HDR) - Monument Valley looking especially fantastic at night. Track design is varied and interesting as well.

Audio in terms of the environment can be rather pronounced too, though mainly on the Malaysian stages; the sounds of tropical birds and gushing water in the background.

Some of the cars are a bit of a handful to get to grips with like in any racing game, but generally the handling is spot on, and it doesn’t take much effort before you’re able to purchase something new. One of the most difficult and twitchy/light cars is actually the first one in the opening introduction, strangely.

I think a number of reviewers have been overly harsh on this, tbh. I’ve certainly had more fun playing V-Rally 4 these past couple of weeks than DiRT Rally.

Just loaded up GT Sport for the first time in months, nice 22 GB update before I can play as most of the game needs a connection. Did a few laps of the Nurburgring ring though :)

It's a tidy racer that doesn't take itself too seriously, and as you point out the stages and environments are really interesting. They have an almost Sega Rally blue-skies arcade vibe to them. VR4 can be a lot of fun.

However, on PS4 the AI difficulty slider is completely broken. No matter where its set, 0% or 100%, the difficulty is permanently set to the highest level. Winning a championship is nigh-on impossible. Looking online it seems that players complaints regarding this have fallen on deaf ears as there has been no feedback from the developer and, more importantly, no patch. It's why I finally decided to ditch it.

Giving this a bump, as I couldn't see a thread for Dangerous Driving, a new racer from Three Fields Entertainment.

It's essentially Burnout. Has anyone picked it up yet?

I was keen on the idea but I haven't bought it, Celer. I bought Danger Zone - also by TFE - as I loved Crash Mode in Burnout; and the game was fun but extremely basic in terms of presentation. Danger Zone 2 seemed to be similarly presented and, going by the vids and reviews I've seen, Dangerous Driving appears to be the same. The fast effects have been praised but, even at a "budget" price (albeit £25, which doesn't really feel to be that budget), the presentation is still weak. It is pure racing with no crash mode; although the physical version includes Danger Zone 2.

I love the idea and it kinda feels like I'd like to support the relatively small dev team... but, in my eyes, it just doesn't seem to match up to the Burnout games.

I'd seen Fail Race's video on it, and it's definitely a budget Burnout. A bit too budget in some areas.

It has no music unless you use spotify premium... which is incredibly off-putting to me, as I don't, and I don't want to a) play with no music, or b) set up another way of having music while I play.

The extreme fish eye lens thing going on makes me feel nauseous just from a few minutes of video.

Thanks Jawa, I don't actually have Danger Zone 2, so the physical version might be a better choice for me as you're getting both games for the price of one.

Codemasters are rebooting GRID:

It will have the grid formula of multi-discipline racing, with Fernando Alonso involved as a consultant and in the game too. Out September.

I hope they've learned their lessons from Grid 2/autosport and remember what made the first one so good. The lack of interior views (and when they were there they didn't have working mirrors) was a huge mistake. There is definitely a space for a simcade circuit racer to sit next to the collectathon/open world forzas and the more po-faced gran turismo that doesn't go as far as the serious no-fun simulators like rfactor and iracing.

Looks visually nice, hard to say how it plays from that really though. Is it still down for a September release? Not seen anything regarding its release date since it got announced.

I’m still just waiting for any news regarding the Switch versions of Grid Autosport and WRC8 as I’m desperately hoping both are good ports.

kind of semi interested

I wanna see if there are enough disciplines and cars, and a robust career would be good

cm went from my standout #1 dev in the 360 gen to a just, I dont care, in the space of one or two games

hate to say it but nothing they produced that Ive played for years has any 'soul' - just really really boring
