I was watching some GT7 footage earlier, and something that bugs me - but that's by no means unique to GT as a series - is the lack of a sense of speed in these games. I remember it being the case back in Forza Motorsport 3, and other slightly more sim games (as oppose to arcade racers, and I don't really play 'true' simulation games).

It really takes me out of the experience, and it's why I mainly use the bumper cam in racing games, to try and get that sense of speed up. It's worse in the cockpit view, where you're supposedly doing 150 mph+ and it just feels like you're doing 50 mph instead. Anybody else have this issue? I feel like it's something I notice almost immediately, and then it bugs me the whole time

The sense of speed is a tricky one to accurately portray on a screen, likewise with modern F1 cars that while they’re immensely quick, when you watch them onboard they don’t actually look that quick if you compare it to some footage from before the mid 2000’s, the worse camera quality and the cars being lighter and more lively give a much better sense of speed than anything these days. Imagine it might be the same for games too.

I’ve finally got around to getting my wheel back out today, tried FH4 and F1 2021 but they just don’t seem to be doing it for me, F1 in particular just feels off on my wheel :(

So jumping back on Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa Competizione :toot: The AI isn’t great in AC but it’s fantastic in ACC (well compared to the other games I’ve got on the Xbox anyway), whereas the variety of cars makes AC a much better time trial/hot lap game than ACC. Will load up WRC 9 and try and get a good stint on that too, got it for a matter of a few £ but not really given it a proper go yet, still was good from the little time I’ve had with it. It’ll never happen but I’d love for the developers of AC/ACC to get the F1 license, I think that’d be a cracking F1 game!

Very much my experience of those games

I don't know how anyone sat on a sofa can use a cockpit camera, as you're already however far back from the tv, then the camera is in the driver's eyes, who is sat far back from the front of the car. Its like driving a car by looking through the back window. And don't get me started on people who use a wheel, but use the chase camera :dread: :dread: :dread:

I either use cockpit (when I’m using my wheel) or T-cam or bonnet cam if I’m on a pad.

I mainly jumped between the two AC games last night, did a couple of races in the career mode on ACC, jumped into the Ginetta GT4 car round Imola (which felt great out of the box) and then a few laps of the Nordschleife on AC

Just had a cracking race round Imola in the Ginetta GT4 (by far my favourite car I’ve driven on ACC so far), started with a random grid and ended up starting in position 15/20, went a little deep into the first corner and ended up backwards in the gravel :fp: Spent the race recovering positions and the last 7 minutes of the 30 minute race chasing down first, caught them with about 1 lap to go and messed up my braking as soon as I got to them, ended up finishing in 2nd with 2 seconds between us. My fastest lap was a 1.55 something, probably not quick at all but I had loads of fun which is obviously the main thing

I love stuff like that. When racing against AI, I'll often intentionally start quite far back and see if I can get the win before the laps run out.

Feels like I still need to fine tune the AI level and aggressiveness in ACC (I tried it at 100 one race and they literally wouldn’t leave me alone ) to get to my sweet spot but it is a lot of fun fighting through the field, much preferable to starting from the front. It’s a shame some games almost penalise you for wanting to start at the back (the F1 series in general) when it’s the better option for a game at the end of the day.

I wonder how well GRID Legends is getting on.

To make matters worse, I just read some of the opening races are in Russia which is rather unfortunate.

All the reviews seem to say that this is effectively the previous game from 2019 with some extras and a cringey story mode; fine if you skipped it but not necessarily worth coming back for if you went through the last iteration. It has Denuvo DRM (an invasive program known to mess up machines by slowing everything down) on pc so will probably not bother at all.

I felt a bit burnt purchasing DIRT 5 (not only because it dropped in price so rapidly, but was also glitch ridden) but I'll probably give GRID a go when it's either really cheap (I can see this going to under 30 by May) or on a subscription service. DIRT took a bit longer to turn up than I'd anticipated on Plus, but it was available on Gamepass really quickly.

Codemasters/EA could have held it back and put more content in there instead of releasing it head-on with GT7. Even on Xbox and PC a lot of people are probably still playing Forza Horizon. If I recall correctly Gremlin did the same thing with Motorhead on PS1 (remember that?!) when they released it within weeks of Gran Turismo 1 in 1998.

Codemasters just seem like a bit of a hit or miss developer anyway, like some of their games are fantastic (DiRT Rally, few of the F1 games) but then they release quite a few mediocre games sadly that just feel off for one reason or another. No idea whether to feel excited they’ve got the WRC licence from 2023 (or is it 2024?) or not as the DiRT series alone has been very up and down….

A new twist to F1 games where you play manager for the team rather than driver. It's by Frontier, so it stands to reason it'll be good.

Depending on reviews, should be a day 1 purchase for myself! Motorsport Manager was great, wonder if they’ve poached any of the staff from that to help with this. If it gets a Switch version announced after the others have released it’s definitely the kind of game I’d double dip on if it was good.

Just seen this on Facebook, incredible bargain.
Probably worth it for iRacing and the Assetto Corsa games at it is!

https://www.humblebundle.com/games/ulti ... dle_bundle

EDIT: iRacing is only a 3 month subscription, but might be worth it to see if it's your thing

Don’t Humble Bundle still take most of what you ‘donate’ unless you change the % yourself? Not that it’s not a great bundle of racing games though!

I know it’d be a relative nightmare considering how much of some of the included games success has been down to the various communities modding the game themselves, but it does make me wonder if there will ever be a point where you can get say iRacing (although I think RF2 and Automobilsta are meant to be really good too?) on the consoles and some packs of tracks/cars just get made available to download for console users throughout the games lifespan at various stages, it’s not like the current crop of consoles aren’t powerful enough to run them is it so imaging it’s licensing or just not wanting to make the jump to consoles being the issue.

FINALLY got my iRacing C license :toot:

I fulfilled the criteria ages ago, but had to wait for the new season to start before it upgraded.

Now to do it all again and get a B license

GT7 is offline one day and been forgotten about by Ad already

Will try and get a few more hours into some form of racing game this weekend, I’d say I’d do a race at Bahrain on F1 2021 but that’s probably unlikely based on how I’ve bounced off it in the past, might give it another go anyway :fp:

Tbh it's not really grabbed me. Granted my time is limited in it at the moment, but the racing itself is pretty poor, so it's only really the license stuff and making sure I'm top of the leaderboards that's of interest. Maybe I just need an all day session on it or something.

While it’s not a bad game at all, I do agree it’s not really grabbed my full attention yet either, certainly not like GT4 did back in the day. Hearing its cut prize money just to try and double down on micro-transactions has put a slightly sour note on it as well.
