Ah yeah, digital acceleration and braking is ok actually if it's built around it. Like you say, tapping will work. Digital steering though :dread:

Completely agree on the GT career mode. It has a lot of standalone races, but the A.I is so poor that they're no competition at all. There's definitely going to be a GT7 for ps5, just for being a graphical showcase alone.

I found a racing game podcast the other day called 'time extend'. Its well worth a listen.

I've been playing a fair bit of dirt 2 in VR. Absolutely terrifying

I can’t remember the last racing game I played with digital inputs for the steering, maybe Mario Kart DS

I was hoping that WRC 8 would support the analogue triggers of the 8 Bitdo SN30 Pro+ but alas it doesn’t, same with Grid Autosport on the Switch as well :( I never actually got around to playing DiRT 2.0, DiRT Rally was great though! Probably a bit too much wishful thinking but after Grid Autosport and WRC 8 coming to the Switch last year I do wonder if Feral Interactive could port over any more of Codemaster’s library of games, it’d be great having an F1 game on the go so you can load it up if the live F1 race is a little on the dull side. I can’t imagine how good DiRT must be in VR as well.

I’m wondering if Gran Turismo 7 could be a launch window game for the PS5, as you said even if just for a showcase of what graphics it can produce, hopefully it has a full on career mode tagged onto it as well.

Need For Speed is going back to Criterion for the next generation.

I loved Most Wanted 2012 and Burnout Paradise, so this is great news to me. Though I do recognise that the Criterion of 2012 will be pretty different to the Criterion of 2020, I still feel they will be able to make a great game.

I’ve been listening to Time Extend based on your recommendation. While it’s hardly a professional production, the enthusiasm and racing detail they cover is refreshing. It’s given me an urge to revisit racers I shelved years ago like Grid Autosport, Sega Rally Revo and Pure. I can totally relate to their dissatisfaction with the latest Grid game which feels threadbare compared with the original a decade ago.

WRC 9 has been announced, early September for PS4, Xbox One , presumably PC and then at a later date for Switch, PS5 and Xbox series X. WRC 8 was great, will definitely be there again for WRC 9 on Switch.

I have a horrible realisation that I might be getting over racing games. I sit down to play them and get a little voice in my head along the lines of "you could be doing anything right now, even playing something with a story more than being the race man and winning the races. Once you have won all the races who cares? You got all the shinies and some achievements, now you will uninstall it and never play it again"

Or its brother "it would take you a very long time to get even semi-competent at this, and you don't have the patience for it so will give up in short order, rendering the whole thing pointless".

Both are right I think, I reinstalled the grid games from the first one to getting the most recent and that ennui hit almost immediately. The only racing game I actually like and want to play is horizon 4, messing around making hill climb/rally cars and dabbling in rivals mode, but that doesn't last for long.

Dam the long stages in WRC 8 really tests your concentration, I’m still not great at it but it feels so satisfying when you even just win a stage, especially an extended one.

Not that I think many here play it but I read something a few days ago about how F1 2020 hasn’t been announced yet due to Covid-19 and when we do eventually get it, it’ll feature the full calendar so it might be worthwhile just to drive Zandvoort and the Vietnam track as we won’t be seeing them this year sadly. As ever, fingers crossed for a Switch version.

F1 2020 has been officially announced, bit of a nothingness release trailer other than announcing you’ll be able to field your own team against the other 10, more Michael Schumacher cars available

Out July 10th, on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Google Stadia (thought this was dead already :lol), with how well the Switch continues to sell I’m shocked they’ve not managed to get a version onto it yet.

Knowing Codemasters it won’t have VR

Bit more information there, no mention of VR though.

I really don't get it, because both dirt rally games have VR support.

Yeah lack of VR makes little sense for what is basically their headline game.

After all my talk, I preordered it  Seeing all the real drivers playing f1 2019 makes it look pretty good.

From the f1 thread:

If anyone is thinking of picking up the new f1 game, cdkeys have it up for preorder on pc for:

£26.99 - regular edition

https://www.cdkeys.com/pc/games/f1-2020-pc-steam

£31.99 - Schumacher edition (DLC Schumacher cars etc)

A British Touring Car Championship Game is Coming in 2021, Succeeds Original TOCA

Three-time British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) champion Matt Neal appears to have confirmed that there is a new game based on the championship in development. One of the best-known national touring car championships in the world, the BTCC has been the subject of racing games before, notably 1997’s TOCA Touring Car Championship.

For many PlayStation gamers, TOCA was the racing game that started it all. Launched six months before Gran Turismo‘s first release, TOCA covered the 1997 British Touring Car Championship. Developed by Codemasters for PlayStation and Windows, TOCA ran gamers through the nine-race season in the era of Super Touring. Players could pick from the eight works teams, including the championship-winning Laguna, and Audi A4.

Over the years, the TOCA game series has evolved, covering more ground than the BTCC alone in later iterations. TOCA became TOCA Race Driver, which became Race Driver: Grid, and that resulted in the Grid games we have today. While that’s a decent title in its own right, it has long since left the BTCC behind.

This is all about to change. According to Neal, who drives the Honda Civic Type R in the series for Halfords Yuasa Racing — the team name of Team Dynamics in the series — BTCC is about to get its own game again. Neal was taking questions on a Team Dynamics Facebook Live event, and the topic of a BTCC game came up. His answer was intriguing:

“There’s one in the making, we are reliably informed. The beta version might come out at the end of this year, and then I think it’s targeted for the end of 2021. It won’t be one where all, umm, you know added on to someone else’s game. This is going to be one where it’s a dedicated BTCC game like the old TOCA package. So that’s pretty exciting actually.”

There were rumors late last year about a BTCC title, but this is the first confirmation that one is now in the works. At this early stage it’s difficult to know what the format of the game will be, but Neal’s comments about the “TOCA package” suggest it will include support events — which could hint at a career mode.

BTCC support races feature British F4 open wheel cars, Ginetta Juniors, Ginetta GT4, and MINI Challenge events. It’s easy to imagine a career mode starting with the Juniors (for 14-17 year olds) and progressing through the categories to the top rung.

If nothing else, the game would feature all eight circuits on the calendar, and the four main manufacturer entries plus the full grid of the independents. BTCC series director Alan Gow has previously stated that any game based on the series must have all the cars and tracks.

While the original TOCA games — and the modern Grid — came from Codemasters, we don’t know who currently holds the BTCC license. However, reports last year suggested that Dan Cammish, Neal’s teammate at Halfords Yuasa Racing, had approached Codies over a new game.

Interesting. I think it was Race Driver 2 that had a load of different touring car style series in. Will be great to see some of the lesser known British tracks again though.

Spent the last couple of evenings doing races on assetto Corsa competitzione (I've just been hot lapping until now), and god damn the racing is so good :datass: Proper decent A.I to race against, that applies actual racecraft by blocking apexes, covering lines, moving off line to stop you just sending it up the inside every time. I came out of the pits and had one car on my right going in to a tight left corner, so i just braked deep so he couldn't turn in, but the car actually did what a person would do and anticipated it to switch back on me and get back ahead. Great stuff.

That’s one of the things I love about racing games, hot lapping is just strangely therapeutic  not played Assetto Corsa but heard it’s meant to be good

Just out of interest, what wheel do you use?

For the next gen consoles I’m going to buy myself a new wheel, I’ve not had one since the PS3 days (Logitech DFGT). I’ve always heard amazing things about Fanatec but those prices :dread: Imagine they’re fantastic wheels but kind of hard to justify! Leaves it between Logitech and Thrustmaster, my previous Logitech wheel was faultless so leaning that way currently.

Hot lapping is definitely my favourite thing to do. It's like your own private track day. I think I spent 20+ hours with one car and track combo in rfactor 2.

I use a Logitech g29 with a playseat challenge. It's basically a G27 with the DFGT controls on, and it's a great wheel. I do think I may also stump up for a big upgrade once the compatibility with ps5 becomes clear, as I spend a huge amount of time playing racing game to justify it. Even the belt driven wheels the GT academy had at Goodwood last time felt like a big upgrade.

I've had a go one of these too:

https://fanatec.com/eu-en/racing-wheels ... g-wheel-f1

Coupled with the direct drive base, the torque on the thing was strawberry floating nuts. Had it set to something like 20% strength and it felt like you could hurt yourself with it. Apparently at 100% it will break your wrists :dread:
