Bet someone on YouTube has tried out the 100% wheel strength with a Fanatec wheel  Is it a Fanatec wheel you’re tempted to upgrade to then?

Only having a quick look yesterday the Logitech G29/G920 do seem the best bang for your buck, they review well as well. Like yourself, I’m hesitant to buy anything before comparability has been confirmed, although I’m sure I read that anything that works on the Xbox One will work going forward, but I thought the same about my DFGT when the PS4 was announced  I’ve also seen the playseat challenge, they look rather good and not horribly overpriced in my opinion. Really want to get back into the racing sims though (I just don’t think Project CARS and Assetto Corsa would have been anywhere near as good with a pad), after a gen away from using a wheel I’ll probably be a bit out of practice.

I’m also undecided on which of the consoles to go for next time so that’s another reason I’m not buying anything yet.

I don't know what I'd buy really. It's not like I'm overly loyal to a brand, I just tried a g25 once, loved it, founf out there was g27, got that, then got the 29 when that came out as it was on offer (and fitted my wheel stand I used a the time).

The playseat is definitely way too expensive for what it is, but it's also brilliant. Really comfy, has a nice driving position, and when I'm in VR I really feel like I'm sat in a car. Being able to fold the whole thing up and stash it away makes it worth the price imo.

I find logitech wheels give you a lot for your money compared to wheels of the same price from other brands. The pedals are much higher quality than you get on some of the thrustmaster ones, and the wheel itelf feels more sturdy. Speaking of which, I tell you what I wouldnt ever buy is a thrustmaster wheel. When we were developing the Xbox one wheel at mad catz, we got various wheels from other manufacturers to test. There was a Ferrari thrustmaster wheel for Xbox one which was a total bag of gooseberry fool. It felt like a cheap toy, and the pedals were awful, so so bad. The wheel was expensive too, and it properly broke after a couple of days light use.

I'll be holding off for compatibility announcements before even thinking of gettting anything else.

Yeah being able to fold the seat easily away is a big plus point for that seat, I mean the £300 plus seats all look good but nowhere near as easy to store away.

Hopefully we’ll find out soon what Sony’s and Microsoft’s plans, as well as the companies who make such wheels are regarding wheel support in the next couple of months.

This would be a big step for the series, the current F1 games are good (well 2017 was and I’m planning on getting 2020 around launch) but definitely on the simcade rather than a sim so getting something realistic would be great, I’d have thought the new consoles should certainly be capable of handling a serious sim if they so wished, maybe Codemasters brought Slightly Mad Studios into their fold to look into this as a potential avenue? No idea how much of a sim Project CARS is compared to the likes of iRacing and R-Factor though.

I've been playing DiRT Rally 2.0 on Xbox Game Pass and as good as the game undoubtedly is, the difficulty curve is a bit silly, no? It's MUCH harder than any of the Colin McRae and previous DIRT games were. I even went and put on 4.0 just to confirm I haven't just got shitter over the years (I have, obviously, but playing 4.0 is like slipping into a comfy pair of slippers compared to this HARDCORE-FEST). I did manage to still finish 1st with full damage enabled on Career mode (bear in mind I'm using a pad and set transmission to automatic)...until I passed Clubman into Pro. Ironically I'm now more comfortable and feel 'at one' with the car (one of the Mitsubishi Lancer's) but it's impossible to finish any higher than 7th. As if concentration levels weren't heightened to the nth degree, some of the courses are over 10 minutes in length, with no ability to rewind should you crash either.

Realistic it may be, but they've really taken all the fun out of the Subaru Impreza 1995 as well. Arguably the most enjoyable and iconic car to drive in previous McRae's, I can't tell you the disappointment when I bought it and the handling is like being on a skid pan, particularly on tarmac (spain). It's like 'hang on, this isn't the car I've been driving in your games for the past 20 years, WTF have you done to it!'

Brutal, brutal game. The Richard Burns of today.

I've only played DiRT Rally and not 2.0 but that had a steep learning curve from what I remember. I kind of love the longer stages, you have such a sense of achievement when you win one it makes all the concentration melt away as soon as you've crossed the line.

On the tarmac handling though, wasn't that meant to be one of DiRT Rally 2.0's weak points? and conversely one of WRC 8's strengths?

Are you ready for Trackmania: This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things Edition?

Ubisoft Nadeo's Trackmania Nations reboot will be free-to-play, but it'll also have two subscription tiers if you want access to some of the arcade racer's advanced features. For those who don't pay anything, solo and multiplayer races will be available, with the roster of 25 tracks rotating on a quarterly basis. You'll also be able to play user-created tracks and "try" (which I take to mean "demo") track, replay and skin editors.

To get full access to these editors, there's a $10 yearly subscription fee. This tier also gets you access to daily competitions, and every "track of the day" and "official" track will be available to you permanently, rather than a temporary part of the roster.

For $30 a year, or $60 for three years, you get Club Access. Among other things, this tier lets you participate in the Open Grand League, and to have a chance at qualifying for the Trackmania Grand League. "Club Access allows players to join their favorite clubs to access exclusive content and activities such as skin customization, special campaigns, online rooms, training tracks and competitions," reads the update.

There it is. Monetisation...finds a way. Take the cool community features that made the original trackmanias fun, i.e. silly custom maps, skins and servers, and paywall the hell out of them with a subscription service. Okay, $10 a year isn't a lot, but its the principle of not being taken for a ride to get features that used to be part of the game as you bought it. The thought of playing the same handful of tracks for 3 months on end as one of the dickensian street urchins pawing at the windowpanes is pretty offputting.

Get the strawberry float out of here with that gooseberry fool. Trackmania nations was amazing as it was so accessible and had seemingly endless content. Thousands of hours I put in to that.

At least it seems that playing user created tracks will be free, just making them will be behind the paywall. I'll give it a try at least, but I don't expect to stick with it.

Codemasters have secured the official WRC licence

Codemasters has signed an exclusive five-year deal to develop and publish games based on the FIA World Rally Championship series.

The firm will also handle the esports tournaments associated with the franchise.

The WRC series has been previously handled by publisher BigBen Interactive, and before that the developer Milestone. Codemasters will release WRC games for console, PC and mobile platforms, including annual titles that will run between 2023 and 2027.

Codemasters has experience in working with licensed racing IP, having developed the official F1 racing game series since 2009. It's also well established in the rally genre with its Dirts series of games -- a continuation of its famous Colin McRae Rally franchise -- and the firm is planning to launch Dirt 5 later this year.

The UK company says that despite the WRC deal, it remains committed to the Dirt series going forward: "The Dirt Rally team is already working on their next project ahead of the WRC agreement in 2023."

The first WRC game from Codemasters will arrive in its financial year ending March 2024.

WRC is one of the biggest racing championships in the world, with more than 830 million viewers in 150 different markets.

Good acquisition for Codemasters, don’t really see how DiRT Rally and WRC will be able to coincide from 2023 though as they might play very similarly so a minority will buy both while most might just buy one of the two?

Ubisoft says Trackmania is not subscription-based, you just pay for it multiple times

Actually it's not a subscription model but an access to the game for a limited time. You pay for having access to the game for one period and that's it," a Ubisoft rep wrote. "When the time is over, you have to buy the game again for the time that you want to access it again.

strawberry float right off with that gooseberry fool, strawberry float right over a rainbow. Not even going to bother downloading that now for free. What are the odds all the other TM games get shut down in advance of this launching, thanking the community for their "dedication" and "passion". Another nail in the coffin of games series I actually liked.

A third one for this generation of consoles? I’d have thought it’d have been better to wait a little longer (especially now they’re under the larger Codemasters brand) and take advantage of the PS5 and Xbox Series X?

Speaking of project cars, the announcement got me keen for a blast with something other than a GT3 car (one of the few downsides of how focused ACC is), so I fired up PC2. I usually race at mid day out of habbit, so I made it early evening, and picked a field of BAC Monos, pro difficulty and no assists. The car wants to kill you at every step of the corner :dread: Makes it bloody good fun though, constantly on the edge of a massive crash while driving the nuts off it. Annoyingly the Nvidia thing didn't record the whole race for some reason (it was 7 laps), but here's some of it.

Saw this (although was announced three months ago). Looks like it could be good, simple fun – and Sumo have a good track record with OutRun and the Sega kart racing games.

Looks like it might be fun - I remember Auto Modellista on PS2 having a similar look (it was a more serious racer however)

If you fancy some cheap and adequate racing from 2016, Sébastien Loeb Rally EVO and Valentino Rossi The Game are both £3.19 on the Xbox Store until 22nd June.

I've been keeping an eye on that, hopefully it plays well as the visual novelty will soon wear off I think.

I know not everyone are into Hat Films, but they have been given a code for a Dirt 5 demo, so I thought I'd give it a link anyway.

It does look a beauty of a game, and the tracks are so full of detail. I really want to see more of it, as it's certainly attracted my attention.
