PostGraduates of University - Do you work in your study field?
by gaminglegend » Fri Feb 17, 2023 2:18 pm

Having a chat with some friends the other day and we realised almost none of us work in any field directly related to our degrees.

And for me I’d love to, but probably as it’s over 10 years later, impossible to break in I imagine.

So I ask Grcade graduates..

Once you graduated however long ago, do you now work in a job that’s in anyway related to your field?

I guess in a more a general sense, after University what did you do and how did you end up there?

My tale:

For me it’s a no. I’ve worked since I was about 14, worked pretty solidly alongside college and University too, stayed in the same industry sort of as my part time role, got promoted a few times, few differing companies. I’m very driven and good at what I do, but think I got a bit carried away with an earning a wage (not amazing by any means) and progressing to the next level, and the next..

Now I’m probably as high up as I can go without another sidestep into a bigger company but feels like I’ve wasted that degree and really the subject/field I studied and that I was passionate and very good at.

All of my siblings work in and around their degree fields and I feel have a lot of doors open to them. I do enjoy my industry and I am passionate around some of it, but I think the challenge has worn off, and it’s not using me to my best strengths in my eyes. As much as I’d like to dispute, I know I’m replaceable.

A few years ago I did some coding courses but didn’t think it was for me, I’m very adept with IT and stuff but just didn’t enjoy doing that either, note I didn’t study IT at University yo r anything I was just looking at switching it up.

Paid for a small coaching plan over a few months from a recommended job coach via LinkedIn that was a waste of time. (Was supposed to work on how to transfer your skills and experience into other industries).

Thinking about getting a CV reviewer/site to look over mine and see what they can do. Anyway I feel I sound like a massive negative nancy here and I’m not :lol

I did an Open University degree while working. Mostly just to learn things that interested me, very little of it was relevant to my job. As I didn't do it for work, I did an Open degree and just picked modules that sounded interesting, everything from astronomy to creative writing to IT and even a module on religions.

It took 6 years and I was lucky that I started before the Tories destroyed the opportunity for cheap degrees. Each module was quite cheap (few hundred quid) and I managed to finish it before the fees shot up into the thousands of pounds.

I studied physics, which included a module on programming in python, and now I work as a python (mostly) programmer (but not in a science related field). I voted "sort of" based on that.

Yes, did an HND at a polytechnic in software engineering then did my 'computation' degree at UMIST.

And here I am thirty years later, coding away all the day long. It's not a bad way to earn a living.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

I studied Economics, and I now work in international shipping for a retail supply chain, and previously worked for a drinks retailer. So not really, no.

To be fair, I barely graduated, so I don't think many places would have taken me on for anything degree specific as it was.

Yes. Three history degrees, all of which get regular use.

Why am I not surprised that a history graduate had to use Google?

It's just a silly joke that you have three history degrees but no knowledge of a very famous band/song.

I know. That's another part of the joke.
