To stop people modifying their saves to get loads of money to bypass grinding for the really expensive cars.

I do like GT but at times it really does disappear up its own chrome-plated exhaust pipe with pretentiousness.

If someone wants to do that, let them? It says itself in the blog that Gran Turismo 7 is a car collecting game, even more so than previous entries so if people want to make the means to collect cars easier then why stop them? If people want to earn it by racing more that’s fine too?

From the man himself:

Kazunori Yamauchi wrote:The requirement for the online connection isn't specific to the Cafe per se - it's just to prevent cheating overall from people trying to modify the save data, so that's the reason for the online connection...The online connection is required for the campaign mode. The only part of the game that doesn't require an online connection is the arcade mode, because that has no effect on the save data, so that's possible. But anything that has to do with the save data requires a connection. For example things like the livery data as well - that's something that is downloaded from the online server.

It's such a dumb excuse. I would like to know the real reason.

And who gives a gooseberry fool if somebody wanted to modify their save game? This has happened to every GT game until the GT Sport debacle. If they're worried about online cheating then split offline and online saves, mandating a constant online connection to play a single player racing game campaign is strawberry floating absurd.

It does feel like they could have found a better way round this.

One other point of clarity I wanted to make was about dynamic time and weather, which wasn't a part of Gran Turismo Sport.

Kazunori Yamauchi: In GT7, the time and weather will be moving in real time.

This is a cross platform game as well, which I imagine is quite a big undertaking. Will PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions have feature parity - will things like the dynamic time and weather be a part of both versions?

Kazunori Yamauchi: Feature wise, they will be the same, but the quality that you'll be seeing will be different.

Google translated -

I'm looking forward to implementing ray tracing, but on the other hand, what game fans are interested in is where ray tracing can be used because it is very heavy processing.

Mr. Yamauchi: For the time being, you can choose ray tracing in the replay even during the game, and then you can see the stage demo and the picture with ray tracing applied in the garage.

So the actual gameplay isn't using ray tracing then?

Nope. Forza Horizon 5 is taking same approach too.

Who cares about Ray tracing when you've got an awesome handling and damage model, plus great racing A.I.!!!!

....

No proper Ray Tracing?! Poly-phoney more like!

They're so far behind the pack now, their competitors have been streets ahead for generations now:

Funnily enough, PLAY magazine used that image on the front cover of issue 31 to represent their review of Gran Turismo (Sony hadn't provided the magazines with any decent assets that would have been suitable to slap on the cover; OPM resorted to just using the GT logo).

Is forgotten about that game! What a shameless attempt to trick people in to buying it instead of ridge racer

Especially when the current Ridge game at that point was "Rage Racer" which when spoken out loud sounds an awful lot like "Ray Tracer"

It is the real reason, but that's not the whole picture. Look at the add-ons for GT Sport and all the cars you can buy for real money, a feature that only came into the series with this game:

https://store.playstation.com/en-gb/product/EP9001-CUSA02168_00-GTSPORT000000000/

If you can modify your save to give you tons of cash then you have no reason to open your wallet for a few quid here and there if the 20million+ credit grind per high end car is getting too much.

I see that always online for SP has, unsurprisingly, gone down like a lead balloon. Nevertheless, GT7 does look rather good.

I was disappointed when they announced F1 2021 and Horizon 5 only had raytracing in replays and photo mode, but still really surprised by this and GT7 felt like it was going to be more of a next gen focused game despite them putting it out on PS4.

The wait to see how it works in Forza Motorsport will be interesting. If it also does the same then looks like these machines are just not there, much like the PS4 and Xbox One couldn’t do the 4K that such a fuss was made over when launching that gen. if Motorsport does have full RT then you feel like crossgen might have spoiled the only GT we get this gen.

Have we heard how Forza 8 is going to use ray tracing? With it being a Series/PC only game it might be a different story but wouldn’t surprise me if it’s only in replays and photo mode.

Also I’d be shocked if the PS5 got more than one GT game considering how long GT7 has taken to come out, likewise I can also see FM8 being the Series console only FM game too if they’re pushing it as a longer term game.

Ultimately I couldn't give a flying fig about ray tracing, games can look gorgeous with or without it, and half the time the nature of games means that it's all moving too quickly for you to see/appreciate the difference it makes. Like any feature it's a trade off in terms of cost and reward.

It's just interesting that this doesn't actually use it when such a fuss was made about it's inclusion during the early reveal and reports on the PS5
