It's perfectly possible to never go near online races in GT Sport and just treat the game like any other racing sim, racing against the AI in custom races, unlocking everything from within Arcade mode. The lack of clarity on this point from the gaming media has been shocking.
I mustn’t admit that, from a cursory glance over a couple of reviews, I had gotten the impression that the game was entirely online. I didn’t know that you can play in a single player mode. Does Arcade mode have challenges / tournaments?
Arcade mode is essentially the equivalent of running custom races against the AI in Project Cars 2. You can just choose a track (from those you have unlocked), your car (from those you have so far unlocked), time of day and off you go, or you can customise the race down to a granular level - seriously, there are tons of options for setting up custom races exactly how you want them in Arcade mode. When you first start the game the quickest way to unlock all the tracks is to play Arcade mode. As you race your in-game progress accrues and you will be rewarded with track unlocks, as well as other rewards such as gift cars, etc.
You are always racing against the AI in Arcade mode (unless you are racing time trials (you race your ghost)). The difference between this and Project Cars 2 is that
you will earn rewards, career progress and unlocks when racing against the AI. It's exactly like the online component of the game, but without the hassle of racing idiots - and because you can micro manage your difficulty levels you can potentially earn/unlock a lot more, a lot faster.
I'm not aware that you can set up championships in Arcade mode (yet?), but that's not really the point. It's a fully-featured 'do as you want, race where you want' mode which pays you with in-game currency and unlocks. Essentially, for me,
Arcade mode is the single player portion of the game, not the so-called 'Campaign mode' which is nothing more than a driving school (although it is an easy way to unlock additional cars for very little effort and for this reason is worth investing time in doing). I'm mystified why this is obfuscated by the gaming media. GT Sport has a fantastic SP game: it's called Arcade mode!
Note: the only time you don't earn rewards or progress in Arcade mode is if your game loses internet connection. You can still play Arcade mode when you do not have server connection, but your rewards and progress will not be saved. Bummer, but hardly a deal-breaker: I've had one loss of server connection (briefly) since starting the game - and that was actually during qualifying laps for an online race!
