And in just a simple 10 second teaser, we see the new location, and it is looking good. Looks like somewhere in South America.

Well, PC players will be able to enjoy it in story mode with mod menus, but it would be nice to have it as an official entity in story mode for all versions. I guess we'll be getting a full reveal tomorrow? Far as I remember the same thing happened with the Casino DLC with a tease and then a full reveal the next day. Should be a great one.

As for why it took them seven years... Maybe they've cut it from GTA VI and repurposed it for V Online. Maybe it's only available in heists and other modes on the current version and will be available for freeroam in the next-gen version (but then why would boats be on sale right now?). Who knows? All we do know is that an island (or is it more than one) will be arriving in less than a month from now.

GTA online is 7 years old. I was big into it a few times but I genuinely can't understand how people are still playing it after that long

Now, this I like. The new location seems like it will only be available during the heist, but... it's finally time to say at last. For the first time - we can heist SOLO! The rewards for doing so will probably be less, but this is something I can enjoy without randoms messing things up. And the great news? Releases a day before my birthday on the 15th.

Full description:
It’s time to raise the stakes higher than ever before. You’ve broken a convicted spy out of Bolingbroke Penitentiary. You’ve saved the world from an egomaniacal tech billionaire. And you’ve beaten the odds to drain a casino of its cash. This time, you’re taking on an entire island.

Prepare to infiltrate the remote island compound of the world’s most notorious drug dealer in Grand Theft Auto Online’s biggest, most daring, and action-packed addition yet: The Cayo Perico Heist.

It’s up to you to find a way to breach Cayo Perico, one of the most secure private islands in the entire world, evade or neutralize the heavily armed security forces stationed there, and escape with valuable evidence along with as much art, gold and drug money as you can carry.

Choose your tools. Choose your approach. Choose your crew – or even go it entirely alone. Just make it back to Los Santos in one piece.

The Cayo Perico Heist is the biggest GTA Online adventure ever, introducing an all-new exotic Heist location, with a brand-new approach to Heist design that features the ability to play everything solo or with up to three other players. Plus you can acquire new vehicles and tactical weapons, experience new social spaces to dance and party with friends and new world-class DJs, and listen to new radio stations with over 100 new songs. Oh, and a very large, very versatile, and very heavily armed submarine HQ with plenty of other surprises.

Stay tuned for more details as you prepare for The Cayo Perico Heist.

Excited for this update now. Though, not sure if I'll ever around to playing most of it.

I'm amazed how much stuff there is to do in this already - although I probably shouldn't be as its been out for so long.

I keep starting the single player game, playing for 10 minutes, then just spending "5 minutes online" to spin the casino wheel.

Then suddenly two hours have gone, I still haven't spun the wheel, I've got an outrageous new hat, and loads more missions and objectives are popping up all the time.

It's kind of overwhelming what Rockstar have done with this.

Also, I do hope it's a nuclear sub. I'm going literally ballistic if it is.

I remember strawberry floating around with the online for all about twenty minutes about 6 years ago. I assume it's changed a lot since then but I absolutely could not find any fun in it beyond starting off, getting a car and immediately getting griefed by some twat with a rocket launcher.

Now you just get griefed by guys on flying motorcycles.

I will still give this a go, but would have much prefered news of a new next gen gta over a new map. Ive grinded the online far too much and finished the story mode twice (360 and ps4)

It's hit or miss with the lobbies. I've been able to do multiple business sell missions in fully lobbies without even the slightest hint of an attack, while other times you've got people stalking the city in their jets, attack choppers, and mechanical broomsticks waiting to absolutely hound someone until they ragequit. Such is why I'm usually in invite only lobbies doing anything that can be done solo. Also helps that the game runs faster when in invite only lobbies when swapping between missions/races.

GTA online is awful, it's full of griefers, you can't do anything without some pleb in a jet blowing you up....and I play DayZ were if you get killed you lose all your progress.

That happened to me to start with too.

Until I realised you could enable a passive mode in the online options, so you can play without being shot at by anyone, if you just want to tootle about for a bit and see what's what.

It massively limits what you can do: e.g. you can't fire guns or do a lot of the missions as a result while it's on. But it at least lets you learn the ropes and have a bit of a laugh driving around and messing around. As well as to level up a bit, try a few races etc, till you get some experience and some gear and hopefully feel more confident about entering the shark pool.

My main complaint is that, maybe because this has all presumably developed organically over time, it's bewildering to a newcomer. There is no useful guide or tutorial, I've been googling everything. Even despite doing that, it took me and a friend 3 days at a couple of hours each day pressing every option just how to work out how to play in the same game and drive about together.

Nearly abandoned it, since that was the main appeal to us, and it's by no means obvious what to do. Plus, we still can't get it to work in a foolproof way, hence about half an hour each time farting about trying to join the same server.

But what a huge laugh when you finally manage it! The whole thing just opens right up

Of the hundreds of hours I played GTAO very, very few were spent doing missions. The loading is rubbish, the connection was never reliable enough, the rewards were always measly so earning enough to "progress" is a massive grind, and they just aren't anywhere near as fun as just messing around in the open sandbox. The random world events like armoured trucks or player bounties give plenty enough to engage with and I unlocked pretty much all of the weapons (I'm sure they've added plenty more since) so that wasn't an issue, I just had to resign myself to never being able to play with any of the fancy vehicles they kept adding or buy any of the expensive properties - which to be fair, were deliberately a massive in-game grind to drive "micro"-transactions anyway.

I'm sure how I played some people would consider griefing, but it's a PVP online sandbox, you should expect to get jumped now and again!

Arguably, now could be a good time to jump back in depending how long they support it, since you can get various packs including loads of properties and even cash to buy stupid space weapons without the grind.

That said, you probably do need a bit of practice to make it worthwhile.

I did nearly switch off after the first few minutes too, as every time I respawned and tried to look at the menu or map, just to figure out what to do, I was just blown up. Then wait for a minute to respawn, aaand repeat.

Really, they needed to have passive mode as the default for all new players, till you could work out what the buttons do and then be able to switch it off for yourself when you're ready.

Saying that, once you do have the basics, it can be amazing to be right in the middle of the chaos. I tried to get my first car to sell on the other day, and completely fluffed it, all my fault.

That meant, everyone else on the map could then see I was trying to steal a prestige car and get it back to my garage, and suddenly there's a target on your head and everyone is out to get you. No fun on foot, but a right laugh in a supercar - I was laughing my head off narrowly avoiding so many ridiculous vehicles coming right at me, and mostly doing it by sheer fluke, especially as I'm rubbish.

I realised I was firing a harmless flare gun right back at them for one thing, which can have only made things worse in my attempts to lay low and not draw attention.

Still, I really couldn't complain about being blown up either this time. It certainly is unfriendly to newcomers, though. Like I say, I've only stuck with it because I was chatting to a mate and therefore persevered. I'd have binned off any other game like that if playing on my own long ago.

Which is a right shame as there is such a world of things to do in it.

GTAO in the early hours with friends is definitely my best memory of online gaming. You can grind in a private lobby but if I have to do it solo Id rather be in a populated lobby and with the occasional griefer destroying my cargo. But having a crew of friends that can have your back and with who you can do heists together makes the game 100x better.

I was online on GTAO since the very first day it opened up, and those first months although there were only gooseberry fool missions for Gerald to do, where so much fun as we discovered the game together.

New Cayo Perico Heist trailer. Seems we'll be stealing a lot of goods from all over this new island. Trying to get everything solo will be a massive undertaking, but it should be open enough to allow us when to say we've done enough. Stealth is going to be a real big factor here, I would think. Until things inevitably go wrong and big booms are needed.

And the new content is now released.

I'm yet to get into it, but I'm well prepared in terms of money (just about) for what I need to get into the heist. Don't forget, I'll be live at eight playing through that heist and exploring other stuff (if there's time).

Honestly, for as much as I'm excited to try the new heist, couldn't agree more with this. The Online has just been getting worse each update, and it seems yet more has been broken this time. I can't really complain since I just stick to races most of the time, but I'd take a new location and a new story with plenty of things to do within the world. However, I also feel that putting up with this Online for three years more will give us the GTA VI we want, with as much (or more) love and care put into it as Red Dead Redemption 2 had.
