Chalmers: Welcome to the 2023 GRCade Game of the Year Awards, I’m your host Supernintendo Chalmers and along side me is none other than my useless sidekick SKIINNNNEEERRR!!!

Image

Skinner: Thank you Superintendent Chalmers! We’ve got seven categories to get through this evening, and first up is the Best Graphics of 2023, now we all love a visually appealing image while playing (no context thread ahoy!) and we had multiple games up for consideration for the best graphics.

Chalmers: That’s right and while Spider-man 2 and the remaster of Metroid Prime came close there was one game which took the general consensus so without further ado, the winner of best graphics is…….

Best Graphics
This award recognises the game with the best visuals. This could encompass graphics, art style, lighting, animation, etc.
Eligible: Any game released in 2023

Previous winners:
2006: Gears of War
2007: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
2008: Gears of War 2
2009: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
2010: God of War III / Mass Effect 2
2011: Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
2012: Halo 4
2013: The Last of Us
2014: Driveclub / Mario Kart 8
2015: Splatoon / Star Wars: Battlefront
2016: Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
2017: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
2018: Red Dead Redemption 2
2019: Resident Evil 2
2020: Last of Us Part 2
2021: N/A
2022: Plague Tale: Requiem & God of War: Ragnarok

THE WINNER
Image

Skinner: Yes that’s right, the remake of the 2005 Resident Evil 4 has won by a landslide. Games like this give me the heebie geebies so this game being the best visual representation is definitely not my cup of tea. But congrats to Capcom, I’d hate to think what it looks like in PSVR2…. Then again no one can tell us as no one has bought one.

Chalmers: Moving swiftly on, we’re now going to present the award for best sound in 2023….

Skinner: If you don’t mind I think I’ll take over this award, after all I’m some what of a musical genius you know….

Image

Chalmers: SKINNNEERRR!!!! You sucked and you know it. Anyway moving on we had quite a few nominees in this category but two stood above the rest, the surprising Hi-Fi Rush which could only must second place and there was one outright winner. Top of the pops, the one who sung the loudest, the one…. Ok you get it. The Best Sound of 2023 is…….

Best Sound
This award recognises the game with the best audio. This could encompass music, score, sound effects, sound editing, sound mixing, voice acting, etc
Eligible: Any game released in 2023

Previous winners:
2006: Gears of War
2007: Super Mario Galaxy
2008: Dead Space
2009: Halo 3: ODST
2010: Halo: Reach
2011: Battlefield 3
2012: Hotline Miami
2013: The Last of Us
2014: Alien: Isolation
2015: Star Wars: Battlefront
2016: Doom
2017: Super Mario Odyssey
2018: Red Dead Redemption 2
2019: Untitled Goose Game
2020: Tie! - Streets of Rage 4/Doom Eternal
2021: N/A
2022: Xenoblade Chronicles 3

THE WINNER
Image

Skinner: Yes Zelda has picked up it’s first award of the evening, the delightful sound track along with the grunts and mischievous noises of Link and the environment has won over our beloved forum and is now cemented in the history books. Congratulations Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom!

Chalmers: And now we move onto Best Multiplayer. The category where you need friends or the ability to play online….

Skinner: I don’t have friends, and mother doesn’t let me talk to strangers online.

Image

Chalmers: Right just sit here and sniff this and you’ll make all the friends you’ll ever need. Anyway there was only one real winner in this category so lets get on with it!

Best multiplayer
This award recognises the game with the best multiplayer (local or online). This should include the game itself, but also accessibility and ease of match-making, etc
Eligible: Any game released in 2023

Previous winners:
2006: Gears of War
2007: Halo 3
2008: Left 4 Dead
2009: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
2010: Halo: Reach
2011: Battlefield 3
2012: Nintendoland
2013: Battlefield 4
2014: Mario Kart 8
2015: Splatoon
2016: Overwatch
2017: Splatoon 2
2018: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
2019: Tetris 99
2020: Fall Guys
2021: N/A
2022: Splatoon 3

THE WINNER

Image

Chalmers: Yep that’s right turns out we all enjoy beating the crap out of each other online in the fantastic beat-em-up Street Fighter 6! The online mode of this game was fantastic and really embodied everything right with multiplayer gaming. Now let’s see if Seymour can join in next year….

Skinner: We really need to be independent you know, like really independent, none of this big triple a stuff, no big companies, no big publishers, you know just you on your own without the man holding you down, producing whatever you want, creating whatever….

Chalmers: Ooookay think you need to stop sniffing now and come back to reality. As Skinner was trying to say, the next category is for Best Indie Game of the year. Now we had A LOT of nominations this year but there was one that just pipped Jusant and Highland Song to the post. So without further ado;

Best indie game
This award recognises the best indie game that was released throughout the year; created by independent game developers, rather than those who work for large development studios or publishers like Sega and Ubisoft
Eligible: Any game released in 2023

Previous winners:
2020: Hades
2021: N/A
2022: Vampire Survivors & Stray

THE WINNER

Image

Chalmers: The delightful retro-inspired turn-based RPG Sea of Stars is our winner of Best Indie game this year. The game which was launched by Sabotage Studio on all platforms was a big hit on the forum this year and deservedly wins the Best Indie game of 2023. Now before I announce the next category I need to go find Skinner as he’s wandered off…..

Image
Skinner: Superintendent Chalmers! Good news I’ve got the results for the Console of the year award. It’s a complete shock but you can double check the results in my office right now, come on!

Chalmers: JAAAAWWWWAAAA!!!! The playdate will never win Console of the Year, no matter how you try to rig it by having OrgangeRKN vote for it! Now get out so I can continue the awards in peace.

Image

Best console/system
This award recognises the console or gaming system that has had the best support/features and showing in 2023. Such as exclusive line-up, new system launch, services offered.
Eligible: Any console or system available

Previous winners:
2022: Steam Deck

THE WINNER

Image

Chalmers: Yes the mighty Nintendo Switch has beaten off competition from the PC and PS5 to solidly win the best console of 2023. With big titles like Super Mario Wonder and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom launching this year the handheld has gone from strength to strength, now if only Nintendo could pull their finger out and get the Nintendo Switch 2 revealed this year!

Skinner: Sir I’m sorry about that, I did not enjoy whatever that was you made me sniff… but more pressing concerns the next category we have a draw! It’s literally neck and neck.

Chalmers: Hmmm, well I haven’t made my vote yet, so I vote for this one. There you go, no issue here. Get rid of that and right out the new award right now.

Image
Most anticipated game
This award recognizes the game members of GRcade are most looking forward to that has not yet been released.
Eligible: Any game that has been officially announced (so still no Half-Life 3 please), but not yet released.

Previous winners:
2006: Halo 3
2007: Grand Theft Auto IV
2008: Resident Evil 5
2009: Halo: Reach / Mass Effect 2
2010: Mass Effect 3
2011: Mass Effect 3
2012: The Last of Us
2013: Xenoblade Chronicles X
2014: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
2015: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
2016: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
2017: Red Dead Redemption 2
2018: The Last of Us II
2019: Cyberpunk 2077
2020: Zelda Breath of the Wild 2
2021: N/A
2022: Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

THE WINNER

Image

Chalmers: There that’s better, the upcoming release of Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is going to be a huge title for PlayStation 5 this year. It only just pipped the remake of Paper Mario: Thousand-Year Door to the post though. If only Xbox had a game that was so highly-anticipated for next year, the best they could muster was Avowed but that was nowhere near the amount of votes of the other two.

Skinner: Next up is the biggest disappointment of 2023. I do wonder what it’s going to be? Owning an Xbox myself I’ve not seen many disappointments this year…. Oh actually.

Chalmers: I’ll tell you what, let’s both think of what our biggest disappointment is and say it at the same time… ready? One…two…three…
Image

Both: REDFALL….

Chalmers: Actually checking the list here it’s only number two on the disappointments. I’ll let everyone think about what it could be while I stand here and have a real smug look being a PlayStation owner….

Biggest Disappointment of the year
Before we reach the main event and celebrate the very best of the year, how about those titles that looked so good but ended up being a big disappointment? What was your biggest disappointment in 2023?
Eligible: Any game that released this year and didn’t live up to your expectations and/or the hype leading up to it.
Previous winners: BRAND NEW FOR 2023

THE WINNER

Image

Chalmers: Now this is an award that Bethesda won’t be putting on a ridiculous PR poster…. Who would’ve thought a huge space game on an aging game engine would disappoint so many. Don’t let the “10/10” reviews from you know those multiple places no-one has heard of fool you, the game just was a big disappointment. We’re not saying it’s a bad game, just not a defining piece of gaming that it was originally hyped up to be. Hopefully they can do better with the new Elder Scrolls whenever that’ll be.

Skinner: Ah here we go sir, the big one, the award everyone has been waiting for, the title that defines a year. The GRcade 2023 Game of the Year! And oh boy do we have a wide platter of games on offer here, picked up direct from Photek.

Image

Chalmers: SKINNNEERRR!!! I told you not to trust him and his Xbox fanboyism, see he’s trying to hide Starfield into every nomination!

Image

Chalmers: Anyway there was really only two nominations to take seriously this year and it’s criminal that Baldur’s Gate 3 got so little recognition from the forum but that’s the joys of public voting. Unfortunately Resident Evil 4 could only muster second place because there really was only one game that was going to win….

GRcade Game of the Year 2023
The big one. This award recognises the best game of the year.
Eligible: Any game released in 2023

Previous winners:
2006: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
2007: Super Mario Galaxy
2008: Fable II
2009: Uncharted 2
2010: Mass Effect 2
2011: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
2012: The Walking Dead
2013: The Last of Us
2014: Mario Kart 8
2015: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
2016: Dark Souls III/ Doom / The Last Guardian
2017: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
2018: Spider-man
2019: TIE! - Resident Evil 2/Days Gone
2020: Ghost of Tsushima
2021: Metroid Dread
2022: God of War: Ragnarok

THE WINNER

Image

Chalmers: Yes is it really a shock? The 2023 Game of the Year was the winner of the 2022 Most Anticipated Game and it duly delivered, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has picked up the victory and it’s second award of the night. A huge congratulations to a masterpiece, at some point I’ll actually get to play it myself. But it’s great to see it loved by so many!

Chalmers: And there we have it, the 2023 Game of the Year Awards, done and dusted. From both myself and Skinner, thank you very much and have a good evening, say goodbye Seymour.

Skinner: Goodbye Seymour!

Chalmers: Idiot.

Well done Chalmers, nice fun award presentation.

RE4 was robbed by the forum’s Nintendo bias, as was Alan Wake, otherwise a good set of awards. Good job.

Great show! And a decent set of winners. I'm glad RE4 won something at least. Can't complain about TOTK.

Thanks again for running/hosting!

Great job, really well done Chalmers!

Pretty decent results overall, glad TotK took the top award as it thoroughly deserved it - an absolute gem of a game.

I agree with Skiner and Chalmers though, Redfall should have walked disappointment. Starfield was a bit crap, but it comes from a studio on a clear downward trajectory and never looked like being anything other than a let down - Arkane have released nothing but bangers so Redfall was a proper let down!
