As Mr K Prof doesn’t like us resurrecting old threads, I am going to bring this back but credit Spindash who originally started the thread.

Spindash wrote:I thought this would make a good thread.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert_Island_Discs wrote:Desert Island Discs is a long-running BBC Radio 4 programme first broadcast on 29 January 1942. It is the second longest-running radio programme (surpassed only by the Grand Ole Opry, 28 November 1925), and is the longest-running factual programme in the history of radio. Originally devised and presented by Roy Plomley, each week a guest ("castaway") is asked to choose eight pieces of music, a book and a luxury item for their imaginary stay on the island, while discussing their lives and the reasons for their choices.

At the end of the programme they choose the one piece they regard most highly. They are then asked which book they would take with them; they are automatically given the Complete Works of Shakespeare and either the Bible or another appropriate religious or philosophical work.

Guests also choose one luxury, which must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

The trouble with anything like this is remembering things and that my tastes change on an hourly basis. I have therefore tried to think of songs that mean something to me, rather than necessarily what I think are the greatest songs. The memories that songs bring back would be far more important when stuck on an island than having the greatest 8 songs ever made, even the greatest songs would get boring after being on repeat for a week or two.

Fake Edit: looking back before I post this, too many of them seem to relate to deaths so I have added in a more fun pick

So here goes:

1. Oasis - Champagne Supernova. I was a teenager in the 90s and so the Britpop era is always going to have a place in my heart. This song means a lot more though, it reminds me of a school friend who died in tragic circumstances. Even the lyrics fit to my memories of him “where were you while we were getting high” and “people believe that they’re gonna get away for the summer” just seem to fit perfectly to what happened. Maybe not the happiest memories to be stuck with on a desert island, but certainly ones to remember.

2. Johnny Cash – A Boy Named Sue. My grandfathers favourite singer was Johnny Cash and I would definitely want a Cash song with me. It is hard to decide on just one of them. Hurt is too depressing (and was released after my grandad died) and so I will go with A Boy Named Sue. I remember my grandad singing it and it is a little more lighthearted than a lot of Cash’s work.

3.Guns ‘n’ Roses – November Rain. I strawberry floating loved GnR as a teenager and I would have to have at least one of their songs with me to remind me of my younger days. It was hard to pick which one, but November Rain is a great song, is long and mixes itself up nicely. It also reminds me of the person in 1. above, he “borrowed” a VHS copy of a GnR concert I had and it took him months and months to give it back.

4. Stone Roses – I am the Resurrection. One of my favourite memories of seeing live music was being outside in the rain while the Stone Roses played this song. Ever since then, just hearing it transports me back.

5. Stereophonics – Local Boy in the Photograph. I pick this for almost identical reasons to Champagne Supernova, although it relates to a different deceased friend. “all his friends lay down the flowers, sit on the bank and drink for hours, talk of the way they saw him last” and “he’ll always be 23” just resonate with me every time I hear it.

6. Kendrick Lamar - Humble. A bit of a change from the rock/indie above. It’s a decent tune, but I mostly picking it because my son loves it. “Put ay ay on! Put ay ay on!” is something I heard non-stop from him for a good few weeks. Unfortunately for my lad he is getting too good at talking and picking words up and a lot of the song isn’t suitable for him anymore. So a nice change from my other choices and it would be perfect for remembering my sons tantrums when I finally refuse to play it after hearing it non-stop for the 40th time in a row.

7. Erasure - Respect. If I am going to be trapped alone on an island for a long time, I want a fun pop song that I can sing along to. There are thousands of them that I could have picked, but Respect never fails to get me singing along.

8. Candi Staton – Young Hearts Run Free. It’s not a song I love or hate, but my wife likes it and it is her karaoke song of choice. It would therefore be perfect to remind me that I am now free of her and happily living in isolation dying of scurvy. ;)

Book: The Lord of the Rings – JRR Tolkien. My favourite book of all time and it has the advantage of being lengthy!

Luxury item: Nintendo DS. This was the hardest choice out of all of them, there are so many luxuries I would want! For this choice I have assumed that the island has a power source and that the DS comes with a large selection of games.

The first guest was gooseberry fool and gave overly longwinded answers for everything killing any interest in the series.

I have only ever listened to a few of them on podcast, but the mistake is to try and pick the best songs. The show isn’t really about the music, it is about the stories behind the music you choose.

Or just go for the Vengaboys, you know you want to.

Some good picks there Moggy, sorry to hear that your teenage years involved what sounds like a more than average level of death.

I actually listened to Word Gets Around for the first time in years just the other day, I still love the album and Local Boy has always been my favourite track from it.

I'll have a think and report back with my island choices once I've thought of something other than the Mamma Mia 2 soundtrack. :shifty:

1.
my most listened to song on last.fm apparently (my profile is here if you care: https://www.last.fm/user/partyhatman. the riff is just too addictive to deny. theres no story attached to this song its just brilliant and i love it

2. skip to 0:11:32
i could have picked any number of Studio Ghibli soundtrack songs. my first girlfriend introduced me to the films and i have many happy memories of watching them with her but this is one of the most grand of memorable songs in the series

3.
you know when people think that jazz or 'fancy' music is just noodling? this is noodling but in the best possible sense of the word - utterly captivating

4.
yes the album art is evocative, but even if you didnt know the band or the cover i think this conjures up the steppes/wastes of Ukraine and Russia perfectly and its full of more riffs and ideas than most metal bands entire albums.

5.
theyre probably my favourite hip-hop group, definitely in my top10 of all-time favourite musicians. i picked this as it gave me the first obvious realisation (while in sec school) that hip-hop could be interesting, not just full of guns and drugs (which i enjoy too!) but could still be popular and 'cool'

6.
one of my favourite, formative types of music is hip-hop - and this is my favourite sample of all time and just the epitome of New York hip-hop. its also impossible to get bored of.

7.
the first band i ever saw live. i got squashed into the armpit of a fat guy  so ended up ducking out of the moshpit but this was a culmination of really loving Mastodon for a large part of my teenage years and i think they definitely got me into more and more metal music which i still enjoy now.

8.
this pick is a bit embarrassing but i cant avoid the fact that my gym playlist (which has been a big part of my life and career for 10 years) has about 50% Project Pat. his music is pretty interchangeable so i chose the most offensive one i could think of

Book: Dhalgren by Samuel R Delany
sci-fi/speculative fiction is my favourite genre, and this book has insane repeat reading possibility. its also one-of-a-kind and quite lengthy.

Luxury item: bourbon

1 ) Sum 41 - Heart Attack

All Killer no filler was the first CD I ever bought. And it takes me back to simpler times. Playing my n64 all summer long trying to get to an insanely high level on Turok Rage Wars.

2 ) REM - The Great Beyond

My brother introduced me to REM when I was about 11. This song always felt ethereal. I just loved it so much. It opened up the whole of an REM discography to me, and they really are a brilliant band.

3 ) Mogwai - Kids will Be Skeletons

I listen to this a lot. I love how Mogwai's song's just build and build until you're just fully immersed in it by the end. This is probably my favourite song by Mogwai, and therefore needs to come with me.

4 ) Eels - Fresh Feeling

I have always been a huge Eels fan and this is probably one of their most uplifting songs. I may regret not taking a more depressing one though. Love a good old depressing eels sesh.

5 ) The Killers - All these things That I have done

Takes me back to that age where I was starting to drink, became interested in girls and starting to go to house parties and all the rest. Good times.

6 ) Meatloaf - I would do anything for Love

Because it's long and EPIC and I need some cheese from the 80's(or 90's). It was this or you're the voice by John Farnborough (or something like that).

7 ) Vivaldi - 4 Seasons

I need some classical and this is my fav.

8 ) James Horner - Freedom/The exectuion at Banockburn

My favourite soundtrack from my favourite film soundtrack. Yes I could have brought any Hans Zimmer too. But gosh darn it, when that bagpipe kicks in at the end! Yes.

9 ) Guns N Roses - November Rain

First song I learnt all the lyrics to. I can still turn it on today and end up driving whilst screaming at the top of my lungs pretending to be Axel.

10 ) Blink 182 - Adam's song

I'm on a desert island, the relevance and irony of never thinking I'd die alone would be too much not to have this song.

Book - Catch 22 - Apparently it takes a few reads to truly appreciate it. Well I'm sick to death of attempting to read this book and losing patience. Maybe I'd have time to finally 'get' it.

Luxury Item - My phone with all the functions it has...except for the function to get me off the island seemingly. And it can be charged too.

All of these songs hold personal significance to me, and they have been listed in chronological order...

1. Kylie Minogue: Hand on Your Heart

For me, this track will always be associated with a trip to the seaside in 1989, i had been given my first personal stereo (a little red Alba unit which lasted for many, many years) not long before and whenever i hear it now, it takes me back to that lovely day at Bowleaze Cove near Weymouth.

2. They Might Be Giants: Birdhouse in your soul

During the summer of 1990, we used to have the radio on a lot in our house and this track was always playing, it pretty much summed up the general atmosphere of that time, bright, breezy, and carefree.

3. Tasmin Archer: Sleeping Satellite

This is a song which i ended up humming for months on end, it was also the beginning of a very strange time of my life as a few months later, i found myself on a path that would see me attend 4 different schools in the space of just 12 months.

4. Spice Girls: Holler

2000 was probably one of the most difficult times of my life, I had almost literally nothing, and was under such intense pressure and scrutiny (including in my own home) that it began the slow destruction of my own mental health. Whenever i hear this song, it takes me back to then, i loved the track at the time and in some ways i still do, but for me it's more than just a bouncy pop song, it's a reminder of how just how far i've come since then.

5. Green Day: Boulevard of Broken Dreams

After i hit absolute rock bottom in 2004 (the end of a process which began in 2000), it was decided among the family that we all needed a change, and so plans were set in place to move home and that would lead me to where i still live today. The soundtrack of that time for me was Green Day's American Idiot album, and this was by far my favourite song. Listening to it now is a reminder of when i started to rebuild and fight back, something i've been doing ever since.

6. Justin Timberlake: What Goes Around...

2006 was when i began traveling around on a more regular basis, i was finally settled (to an extent), and i had my PC office set up for the first time. I would spend many an evening doing what i do now, internet stuff while playing music, but this classy Justin song (which i played more than any other) was where this aspect of my life started.

7. Kat Deluna: Dancing Tonight

Around 2009/10 i began to discover the joy of continental travel, and on one of those trips i bought an album from a music store in Ypres. It was Inside Out by Kat Deluna and the stand out track was Dancing Tonight, i was still relatively new to exploring european locations at that time and this song reminds me of those early days in France and Belgium.

8. Chvrches: Get Away

Chvrches are by far my favourite band of today and they have provided me with a truly great soundtrack for the last few years. In future when i look back upon this decade, their songs will stand out above all others for me, and so i have decided to include my fave song of their entire catalogue as my final choice.

Book: Formula 1 Yearbook 1999

I always prefer non-fiction books, and this record of my fave F1 season will keep me occupied for many, many hours.

Luxury item: Camera

Even on a desert island, they would still be plenty of things for me to film for youtube until i am rescued ;)

Placeholder post, proper list incoming over the weekend.

Led Zeppelin - Since I've been lovin' you

I was first introduced to Led Zeppelin at a young age by my dad, I have a vivid memory of playing Hang-on on the Master System on Boxing day while this was playing in the background.

Mike Olfield - Tubular Bells pt.1

This was pretty much part of the soundtrack to every single Christmas dinner during my childhood but I never got fed up with it as it's just so brilliant - utterly timeless and definitely deserving a place in this list.

The Prodigy - Outta Space

This is the first track of theirs I heard and immediately loved it, I was 11 at the time so too young to be into the rave scene (thankfully) and was introduced to this and similar music by my cousin who would make monthly mixtapes for me to listen to

Stone Temple Pilots - Plush

This song reminds me of a summer holiday when I was about 12, sitting in the back of a Ford Granada with all the windows open driving down the motorway on the way to the airport.

Chemical Brothers - Elektrobank

Deftones - Be quiet and drive

Kyuss - Phototropic

Aphex Twin - Alberto Balsam

This is such a fantastic, beautiful piece of music that although I've only recently discovered it (and the genius behind it) in the last couple of years has immediately become one of my all time favourites.

Will add comments later
