Never heard of him. But then I'm not into boxing that much. Any of his upcoming fights on TV? Did see an English (at least I think he was) boxer last Saturday goes by the name Tyson Fury. I'm sure you've heard of him Phat, you seem to have good knowledge of the sport. He looks quite promising.

The O'Donnell v Watson fight was a good one (on the same bill) too.

Kell Brook's last two fights (a combined three rounds):

To be honest Fury just strikes me as a lump at the moment. He doesn't look to be in very good shape, which is a bad start for a prospect. Technically he doesn't look too bad, but he doesn't appear to be that big a puncher and the following video really makes me question how far he can go!

Far too early to tell of course and he does have a marvellous name, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now, but consider me sceptical.

Fury's big enough and he looks to have some power, but he's not in great shape yet and, you know, he's prone to punching himself in the face.

@Phatman - I totally agree about Valero, that's why I think it'd be a great fight. There's no doubt he's got the power, but he doesn't seem to have much defence. He's like a whirlwind in round 1 and most of his fights don't go beyond that. If he's up against a guy who's got enough boxing nous to survive the initial onslaught, it could be a fascinating match up.

EDIT: damn Phatman beat me to it. Still you can never see a guy punch himself in the face too many times.

I don't think I have a good eye for spotting boxing talent.

Tbh, he (Fury) was probably up against a poor boxer which made him look impressive. Like you say though, awesome name. I checked out the first video you posted and Brook really does look like a great prospect. I'll definitely be keeping my eye out for him, does he have any upcoming fights?

Indeed, on the 22nd of May apparantly against Young Muttley, a decent domestic level fighter who holds a win over Michael Jennings who contested a World title fight recently. Hopefully it'll be his last at domestic level, because I really feel he will be ready for World-level soon. Welterweight is a strong division however, as is Light Welterweight which he may move down to. We shall have to see.

Holy gooseberry fool! What a fight!

Valero vs Prescott - puncher vs puncher. This one could go either way.

Oscar De La Hoya Retired from the Ring

Oscar De La Hoya (39-6, 30 KOs) said that he won’t be making a comeback after retiring yesterday from boxing, saying “I’m 100 percent convinced that I won’t come back.” De La Hoya further went on to mention that he’s made a lot of money in the ring and doesn’t need to make a comeback. De La Hoya went on to point out that he first suspected that he didn’t have what it takes anymore while fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. in December 2007, a fight in which De La Hoya led in the first six rounds but then faded badly in the last six rounds and ended up losing by a 12-round split decision.

This was further confirmed to De La Hoya when he mentioned having problems in sparring for the Pacquiao fight in which he was getting beaten up in sparring sessions. Indeed, De La Hoya’s right eye was blackened during the sparring for the fight and during the HBO De La Hoya-Pacquiao 24/7 special, Oscar could be seen getting pummeled in a sparring session. Rather than cancel the fight and walk away from a huge payday, De La Hoya went through with the fight and ended up being stopped in the 8th round by Pacquiao.

UFC 97 - This Saturday 18/04/2009

UFC middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva returns to the Octagon on Saturday, April 18th to defend his crown against number one contender Thales Leites in the main event of UFC 97. The pound for pound king has already defended his title more times than anyone in UFC middleweight history and will battle Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Leites - winner of five in a row.

Also featured in the UFC's return to Canada is the light heavyweight showdown fans have waited for years to see, as UFC legend Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell squares off against Brazilian superstar Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in what promises to be one of the most explosive bouts of 2009.

Hopefully Shogun can finish Lidell off tonight. He showed so much promise in Pride and I was gutted at how he gassed against Forrest Gump.
Silva should have no problem against Leites. Totally different class of fighter.

Silva's last two fights have been poor but I imagine it's hard getting motivated to fight someone like leites. As for Chuck - chuck got strawberry floated. Never liked the hillbilly bastard. Even after the result was announced he was in a daze.

aww how can you not like chuck, he's great. if you watch his blog, or any of his interviews he is a genuine guy. it's sad he won't be fighting anymore now, he wasn't the best fighter, but he did have great striking and ko ability. also nice wrestling/take down defence. he's just past his time now. can't take those hits like he used too. what i will also say is at least he fights unlike silva has in last 2 fights. thales was below his skill, but he still should have done something more, particularly afte landing quite a few shots, after the 3rd round i was thinking why hasn't he tried to finish this fight, why is he dancing and not trying to hit him. both of them, really poor match. a lot of people think silva is just bored and wants to get out of his contract so he can fight roy rones jr. silva himself has expressed his desire to fight him in boxing and wants too asap. i don't want to see anther performance like that from him tho, total let down main event. other fights were good though. glad shogun won too, looks back in form again.

Results from UFC 97

MAIN CARD (televised)

Anderson Silva def Thales Leites (decision) Retains Title
Sam Stout def Matt Wiman (decision)
Mauricio "Shogun" Rua def Chuck Liddell (TKO)
Krzysztof Soszynski def Brian Stann (kimura)
Cheick Kongo def Antoni Hardonk (TKO)
Luis Cane def Steve Cantwell (decision)

PRELIMINARY CARD (un-televised)
Eliot Marshall Def. Mike Ciesnolevicz (decision)
Denis Kang def Xavier Foupa-Pokam (decision)
Nate Quarry def Jason MacDonald (TKO)
Ed Herman def David Loiseau (split decision)
Mark Bocek def David Bielkheden (RNC)
T.J. Grant def Ryo Chonan (split decision)

Overall, didn't think it was a bad night. Of course the main event didn't live up to anything but to be fair Silva, Leites was absolute balls. The amount of times he kept falling on this back was embarassing.

Shogun, looked so much better than his last fight. Condition, combo's the lot. Felt sorry for Liddel, first time I have seen him fight and in his interviews he seemed quite genuine

Kongo, looked strawberry floating awesome. First saw him at the UFC 93 (? It was the card with Forest Griffin and Rasheed Evans) and he looks like a beast. Can't wait to see him fight some true contenders

Oh really? Not sure why he would want to fight him now. Jones is on the way out unless Silva whats to grab a bit of spot light

You haven't seen him recentely, have you?

Complete shadow of his former self. Tha's why it confuses me that Silva would want to fight Jones, if the rumours are true

Yeah Jones is done, he's just looking for another big pay day. He hasn't got the speed or power to compete at the top level of boxing now, just look at the Calzaghe fight. But when he was good, he was pretty astonishing.

it's true

Anderson Silva is preparing to reaffirm his stature as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the mixed martial arts world when he defends his Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight belt against Thales Leites next week in Montreal.

Beyond that, Silva's interest in participating in a professional boxing match has captured the attention of former world heavyweight and light-heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr., who said Tuesday the possibility of a fight between the two is "very real."

"I'm 100% willing to entertain it," Jones said. "This is a boxing event that'll be very anticipated, a mega-event."

Silva said Tuesday through an interpreter that "it is a personal dream and professional goal to at some point [participate] in a boxing match." Silva said he wouldn't quit the UFC to do so, and intends to fulfill his current contract.

UFC officials have reportedly let Silva, 33, know they aren't going to allow him to box while he's bound to his UFC contract. And Jones made it clear he won't interfere in that deal. A UFC spokeswoman on Tuesday declined to discuss the length of Silva's contract.

Representatives in Jones' camp say they believe Silva's UFC contract expires this year.

Jones, 40, said, "I've heard as soon as [Silva's] contract is open, he'll fight." So Jones said he's mulling a July opponent other than Silva, "and then I'll see what's up with Anderson."

Jones, who operates a boxing promotion business in Florida, fought in the main event of a boxing-MMA card last month, and said he's convinced a showdown between a decorated ex-champion like him and MMA's top fighter would generate a lot of pay-per-view sales.

"People would want to see it -- me in my game against him; he's got very fast hand strikes," Jones said.

Some believe a boxing match would be detrimental to Silva.

"Jones'll kill him," veteran boxing promoter Bob Arum said. "These MMA guys don't know how to throw a punch."

Silva, a highly skilled MMA striker and ground fighter who has dominated UFC's middleweight division since winning the belt in October 2006, has trained under respected boxing trainer Freddie Roach in Hollywood, and expressed interest in resuming a boxing career he began in his native Brazil.

"He told me he wants to fight someone on the level of a Roy Jones," Roach said. "Anderson's very fluid and athletic, but he does make a few fundamental mistakes a boxer of a high level could take advantage of. He wants to train with me, though, and he loves to work. I think he could pick things up quickly. I'd love to work with Anderson."

Jones said a fight with Silva "has momentum, and I'm going to try and make it happen. He's saying he wants to fight me, so, OK, I'm ready. Let's brawl."

Froch is acting like a spoilt brat over the TV issue. Basically he asked for more money than he was worth (parity with Calzaghe against Jones) and Setanta wouldn't give it to him. They offered him the same money they offered Haye for his last fight and Froch turned it down. Delusions of grandeur.
