Ask for a top 10 or 15, 20 is A LOT for me to count.
Yes to PSP and DS.
Yes, any PC game after November 2005.

I reckon 10 would suffice

10 is far too restrictive for 8 years and 6 formats.

I was actually thinking 25, but I suppose seeing as you are doing the count, just as many as you feel comfortable with.

Then you can look at how many different games have got votes to decide on if you do a top 50 or 100 from what you have.

Why not a top 5/10 per genre? I can't think of one game that is the game of the generation.

I think a top 10 and NOT include 3DS or Vita (as they are still in this gen). I don't know how many people from here vote in these kinds of thing, but if you start stretching it out to 20+ you might end up with 3rd place winning with like 3 votes or something. Also 10ish will actually get people to consider every place more carefully instead of shitting it out in a big list quickly.

Also we are all screwed if the list is big because H has hundreds of these lists written up and in a cardboard box under his bed, he can just pull them out and trump us all ;)

BF4 is best multiplayer? I didn't think it even worked properly?

Umm what?

We are talking about over 8 years worth of games on 6 platforms (and that's ignoring mobile titles), wouldn't you find picking 10 games to be limiting in the extreme?

If you think about it then there's a certain number of games that will be on anyone's list, the more interesting titles could get squeezed out with the number of big blockbusters around if you limit it to 10, maybe you have space for 1 or 2, but that makes the choices insanely difficult (do you pick Ouendan or The World Ends With You? Does anyone have space for either?).

I know this may sound a bit ridiculous but I think 20 tops would be fine. I mean this generation has seen fewer genuine 'of the Year' titles than I would have hoped for...but then I'm not including handheld or mobile games.

Nope, best 10 games of generation. Would really get you to consider whether your preferred game X over game Y. Also, the other reasons I gave above I.e if its a top 50 or something it'll be so diverse that outside the top 1 or 2 places you'll likely find no conformity of lists and you might as well just have a topic that lists everyone's own personal preferences. We're after a concerted thought on what Grcade considers the best games of the last gen, not just pages of lists aren't we?

You might think that, but personally I think this generation has far surpassed any previous one in terms of the sheer number of top quality games.

Batman, Uncharted, Bioshock, Gears, Fallout, Skyrim, XCom, Borderlands, Assassin's Creed, LBP, SFIV, Dishonored, Deus Ex HR, The Last of Us, Mass Effect, Dead Space, Bayonetta, Heavy Rain, Rock Band, The Walking Dead...

GTA, MGS, Portal, Forza, Red Dead, PGR, Wipeout HD, Dark Souls, Motorstorm, GT, Crysis, Fifa...

Not touching on downloadable titles (Trials, PacMan CE, Braid, Fez, Journey, Limbo, Super Meat Boy...) handheld titles (Mario & Luigi: BiS, TWEWU, Ouendan, Lumines) or PC exclusives (...). Oh and then there's Minecraft if you like that sort of thing.

The idea this generation has been more barren than before is truly insane.

I know you weren't replying to me on this one, but you've just given an example of exactly what I was saying, you've just gooseberry fool out a big long list of some games you really liked last gen. I'm not denying that they are all great games, but we want to know what people consider the greatest of the great (not just pages of every great game there has been, which is pointless and no fun at all). I'm pretty sure I can think of a few standouts that a lot of people will have in their top 3.

What are you favourite 2 out of the list above - go on, you can do it, I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy the thought process: and I mean that genuinely.

I'm wanting to go in the middle and use 15. I think if there's too many, then a lot of games might end up with the same number of votes.

Of the ones I've listed, probably Arkham Aslyum and Bayonetta (though I might put Skyim before one of them), they'd definitely go in my top 10...but you miss my point. The point is that there are 100's of other games I didn't list that you could consider, the ones I've mentioned aren't the interesting games, if we only do a top 10 we run the risk of not having anything other than the type of games I've listed.

Without even thinking about it I can probably fill up 7 slots, but then I only have 3 left to cover a massive area of games. That's the issue.

Well Buff looks like he's going for 15 which is fine for me. Like he says, you'll likely get votes spread way too thin otherwise. Also why not get your list to top 100, then take that and get top 50 then from that 25 - it's not too much of a jump from then to really get to the bones of your favourites. It doesn't have to be your most played or best technical achievement or whether it moved the genre on etc; just which 15 you basically had most fun playing.

I'm not sure how thin it would get.

Anyway 15 is better than 10, its just going to be hard to choose that last 5 from about 20 games I'd want to include.

Yeah...I agree, the less the better.

I listened to the Giant Bomb 'of the Year' podcasts and many times silent contemplation from the whole team helped to condense numerous games down to a chosen few.

10 or 15 will be fine, methinks.
