I think that I should present an alternative to the others.

You don't need to spend hundreds of pounds on capture gear, microphones and webcams. In fact there are budget alternatives for all of them allowing you to get started and you may be able to use things you already have.

You need to decide first of all what you want to stream so you know how to capture the gameplay footage.

PC games you don't need anything more than a PC and OBS.
OBS is the most popular (and free) streaming software out there and it is able to capture game footage directly from whatever you are playing.

For games on other consoles you will need some sort of capture device to feed the gameplay footage into OBS.

While the most popular capture devices tend to be in the £150ish + range there's recently been a flood of generic brandless USB capture devices that can be found for £10-£15 or so.
Ebay is a good place to find them and all my captured games come through one of them just now. They have their quirks and can be a bit fiddly, but as an entry point to streaming they are a cheap and viable option.

Webcams are not by any means an essential component, but there are ways to use smartphones as a webcam. I used an old Sony Ericson Xperia Play for years before finally dropping some cash on a Logitech C920.

Microphones are essential, though you don't need to splash out. If you have a gaming headset then you can use that (It's what I have) and I get decent sound out of it. Again, you may find there are smartphone apps that you can use.

I wouldn't go out and spend lots of money until you know it something you enjoy doing. Get a few cheap basics and just start streaming. If you find you enjoy it and want to increase the quality of your stream THEN start looking at the more costly stuff.

EDIT: Speaking of streams I'll be on soon playing some more Star Trek: Elite Force II!

Thank you for the helpful replies boys.
I'd be all PC games so would only need the OBS software, microphone and webcam it seems. Probably a new headset. Plan on starting and then blowing up and making huge amounts of coin.

Also want to say thanks for the replies - this is something I think I'd like to get into in a year or so (when I've moved to Chicago (from london) and thus have more space + expendable cash).

Yeah, I'll echo what Devlin says. I mostly stream from PS4 and I just use the PS4 headset I've had for years. In the event I stream from my computer I use a Plantronics headset I got from work when it looked like we were going to be working from home semi-permanently. I get decent enough results from those and don't really feel I need to spend anything right now. My channel is still very amateur hour compared to other folk on here however but since I mostly stream direct from PS4 overlays and alerts etc aren't really an issue for me.

Thirded - I'm using a plantronics headset at the moment and it seems to get on fine. I do regret getting the Elgato based on Dev's experiences with the cheaper capture cards - I think that if they work well then you should absolutely go down that avenue. As Danes says though, I'm very much an amateur at this and probably always will be. I'd bite your hand off for 100 followers.

I've no interest in streaming to anyone outside of this forum :slol: but it'd be great to stream to a few of you guys at some point. I've always liked the idea of playing something like Overwatch / Valorant with people on here, and streaming it so people can join in that are too busy to actually play. Or getting heckled by Maf while playing FromSoft stuff sounds funny too.

My new laptop should handle it. (Now I just need to draw an anime girl 2D avatar, right?...)

I've not done a huge amount of streaming as I struggle to find the time to fit it in but it has been fun having a few of the folk on here watching when playing something like Doom or a Souls game.

I agree with Devlin that you can easily start with minimal initial outlay and that is definitely a great way to get a feel for it and whether or not you actually enjoy it. I just use a £15 headset from Sainos and use my phone as a webcam when I want to stick my mug on stream!

I have 2 capture cards for anyone who wants to spend £30 on an Elgato HD or £60 on an Elgato HD60

The Elgato HD is near £80 on amazon and the elgot HD60 is £100+ there too.

Was wondering how long it would take them to pull something like this. Every partner or affiliate streamer I watch never manually triggers ad breaks e.g. Limmy goes out of his way to not run ads so subscribers and non-subscribers have an equal viewing experience. the absolute strawberry floating worst thing about ads on Twitch just now is when the channel your watching raids another channel and you're immediately met with a 30 second ad and miss the initial reaction.

What's bad about this is that the outrage probably won't get them to change their minds about this. How about you reverse that Twitch? Make the advert the small window while the stream stays at full size and don't mute the audio (or give people the choice). But of course, it's all about getting the maximum revenue possible these days, so obviously this will go full steam ahead and end up being even worse once out of testing mode.

They clarified that was one viewer getting 4 ads in 20 minutes :|

I guess a lot of people will migrate to YouTube streams if the new ads on Twitch are going to be that obnoxious.

Oh... That's clearly not good. People already leave smaller streamers whenever an advert hits. How is anyone meant to build up a loyal userbase if they have no control of when the adverts roll?

Indont know, twitch have never been amazing, with issues around double standards among other things and Mixer had quite a few better features and treated partners better in some ways (unless the Twitch partner was massive then they puld get away with a lot) and was even considered to have a nicer community, yet Twitch stands upon its corpse.
