Clarkman wrote:Hi all, would appreciate some help on this.

PSN have an excellent sale on at the moment, but even with the ShopTo discount on store money, I don't want to get too carried away.

Could you help me pick up to three games off this list to buy? My budget is maybe around £35. I've put some little notes on my thoughts on each.

Spelunky 2 - £12.79 - fairly set on buying this, but not sure if the discount is enough to make the plunge now?
Return of the Obra Dinn - £11.39 - seems to be an unmissable experience, but I don't love logic puzzles...
Kentucky Route Zero - £12.59 - would like to play through this before the end of 2020 so it factors into my game of the year thoughts, but not sure if it would be better on Switch?.

From everything I have seen of all of them I would have gone for these 3, I am waiting to buy these 3 on Switch, hoping for big discounts either Black Friday or Xmas.

I would advise you away from Superliminal. Bug Fables gets a shrug from me.

Obra Dinn is one of the most unique and memorable games i have ever played. And they are not really logic puzzles, more observation and deduction.

I've only played Spelunky 2 from those, which is just more Spelunky so you should know exactly what you're getting.

Of the others, Obra Dinn, KRZ and Far Lone Sails are on my list (also interest in Bug Fables but I doubt I'll play it just because of finite time).

Thanks everyone. I'll likely go with Milner's suggestions, since you collectively seem to agree.

Superliminal is good, but I think it's a little short for the price.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

I would strongly disagree. To give a different take, I think it tries to be Portal without any of Portal’s charm, it has clever ideas that it never gives time to develop properly (the optical illusion bit was ace! There were, what, four of them?), it relies a lot on switching your location suddenly which I think is a very cheap way to disorientate, and the ending is the sort of ‘inspirational’ nonsense I see on Facebook from some of my more imagination-deprived friends. It’s definitely my most disliked game I’ve played to completion this year, maybe even that I’ve played at all this year.

I played Downwell for the first time last night on Switch, what a fun little game that is! Another roguelike but it’s a simple to pick up and play type of game and I really enjoyed what I played. Will give it another go later.

Speaking of roguelike’s, I need to get back to Dead Cells at some point. Not played it since last year and hadn’t completed a full run still.

Yeah Downwell is great, although it's definitely a game that's better with a vertically oriented screen. I should play some more of it

You've given me a great reason to use the fancy pivot action I never use on my monitor.

Doesn’t the switch version have a TATE mode? I never checked last night but I could have sworn I heard it had the option

It does! I have a Switch stand (I got it from RichardUK in fact) that can hold the console vertically while you play with detached joy-cons and it works nicely for Downwell. It's obviously a bit awkward in general though.

Nice! I’ll have to check that out and hunt down one of those stands

It's called a Flip Grip by FanGamer, if you fancy a look.

Downwell is about the only game I've used it with for any real length of time, but it works really well.

Seems it’s something you need to import?

What I have is just some portable stand that the Switch can rest vertically on, nothing as fancy as the flip grip! The flip grip is a lot cooler though because you can play handheld as opposed to tabletop.

Ah it may well be, yeah. I backed it on Kickstarter a while ago, so I dunno what import fees/shipping would be like.

I'm not sure if it's indie enough for this thread(!?), but I will probably play Ender Lilies at some point. It reminds me a bit of Blasphemous and I liked that. It's even more explicitly Souls inspired in terms of presentation. Hard to get a feel for the combat without actually playing it but seems competent at first glance.
