Indie games are from independent game developers and studios. Each game they make may well be funded entirely differently from the last one.

The process of pitching and funding is not trivial. If the likes of EA decide they like your game enough to fund it, it does not make the game or studio any less ‘Indie’. The next game made by that studio may well end up being self funded, or part funded by another publisher. You are not beholden to them for your next game.

Making games is incredibly difficult and getting funding in this industry is really really hard work too. The industry should celebrate every successful indie game that is released. Whether it managed to get funding from EA or not, the efforts the developer went through will have been huge whatever.

Planning on starting Mark of the Ninja Remastered on Nintendo Switch tonight. I remember playing the original on 360 and I loved it, looking forward to delving into it again.

Of the few card based games I've played I'd say its the most accessible one, each of the three character classes has its own deck of cards which range in difficulty to learn how to use effectively but you soon get the hang of things (especially if you watch a few gameplay videos on YT/Twitch).

Its quite hard though, in 50+ hours I haven't "beaten" the third area, the best I've done is get to the third area boss using the 'Silent' class.

As a 'rogue-like' its obviously randomly generated and extremely luck based but it rarely seems unfair when you inevitably get killed.

Cool, it’s one I will pick up once it goes on sale. I like the look of what I have seen of it.

Bought Serial Cleaner with gold points as it was less than £2 (so ended up paying like 16p for it) and I'm a bit disappointed unfortunately. The concept is good, but I don't like the semi-randomised gameplay. In stealth games I like to learn levels to figure out the best way through, which you can't do here. The guards seem to twitch somewhat unpredictably to look behind them too, so I've not being doing great at it either.

Currently an hour or so into Telling Lies, the follow up to Her Story and it really is excellent. Basically the same but more of it, and done better

I've been watching Eastward for a while, the art looks wonderful and I'm hopeful that the gameplay will live up to it.

Over the weekend I played a few new games on Switch.

Mekabolt is a fun little puzzle-platformer that's £3 at the moment on the eshop. A full playthrough took me just under an hour and that was fine by me. There are four worlds, each with 24 levels (iirc) and each level takes no more than 30 seconds to beat, with instant restarts on death and no loading screens in between. Throughout the short run time it constantly introduces new ideas and mechanics so that nothing ever feels padded or repeated, and I was engaged throughout. Recommended!



Sagebrush is a 90s adventure game styled walking sim in which you explore and discover the story behind a suicide cult compound. It's very atmospheric, well paced, and with an engaging, well-handled narrative. Took me an hour and a half to finish, and I was very satisfied with it. £5 on the eshop, and I'd also recommend it.



Yesterday I also bought One More Dungeon and Superhot. OMD is a game I played the demo of ages ago and have been wanting to pick up, so I finally caved - and it's pretty much as I'd expected. Good enough fun, although I'm not sure how long it will hold my attention as a roguelike.

Superhot is brilliant and I really have been missing out having not played it until now! I thought £18 was steep but I feel immediately justified by the experience.

Finished the game a few nights ago, immediately went back and got all three endings. It is excellent.

Yup, it's cool! It's an immersive sim rougelike, which is a pretty novel mashup of genres - and it works quite well. I've not got very far in it, only messed about a little on my own and then played a couple of failed runs in co-op with a friend - it has a lot of depth to it (as you'd hope from an immersive sim) and I've simply been learning the mechanics.

I don't think it's as immediate and easy to drop into as roguelikes tend to be, and that learning curve would probably put some people off. £18 is also steep as an asking price if you're not going to get heavily into it. I wouldn't say I've got my money's worth yet, but I will be playing more.

Yeah, seems a wise choice. Sometimes I think the price is pitched high deliberately just to make sale prices look more attractive.

Finished the Superhot story (didn't realise it was so short, so did it in two sittings) and it is properly excellent. Really want to play the VR game now.

Just started playing some of the katana only challenges, they play very differently to how I was playing the game previously which is cool.
