I know we have quite a few Dads here in Grcade, it's interesting to see if they game and also what they actually play and have you influenced their decisions?

My 9yr olds main game is Minecraft, she absolutely loves it, she plays it on Xbox and on Switch more than any other game (she even wanted - and got - A Minecract X1 controller). I had no influence on this decision, I think it was more down to DanTM a you tuber who plays Minecraft quite a lot. She has a world that she's made and it's mind blowing, she's made, castles, versions of me and my wife, numerous houses, a mcdonalds, a giant tree, a farm, a rollercoster and a whole host of various buildings that she adds to weekly.

She likes Gang Beasts and Sea of Thieves, in SoT's case I shamelessly paid for her to a parrot so she'll play it more because she's quite a capable player. She's gone off Fallout 76 (but I think I can get her back if I build a house) and she dabbles in Lego games but she always comes back to Minecraft, she adds to her world, plays on the Minecraft servers in the mini games (no one can chat, add friends or message her).

She hates Fortnite, like can't stand the game, and this was back when I liked it, she just never got on with it from the start and although she dabbled in building when it arrived, she inevitably preferred Minecraft for doing that.

So what do your's play (if anything?)

Minecraft for the 12 year old. The 14 year old has given up on gaming... :dread:

My 11-year old nephew has played Fortnite pretty much exclusively for the past two years but he's just stopped and switched to mobile games ( :dread: ). My 13-year-old nephew is currently playing GTA Online and CoD.

My 9 year old son is mostly playing Smash Bros on the Switch. His previous favourite was BOTW and he racked up over 100 hours on it (and he doesn't play more than 3 hours a week on Switch so that's quite the endeavour). He's also just discovered the joys of Super Mario World on the SNES app. He's got a 2DS as well and that is mostly either Monster Hunter IV or Pokemon Shuffle.
My 9 year old daughter likes a bit of BOTW or Mario Kart and my eldest has been bending my ear to get an XBox live account so she can play Fortnite but I keep ignoring her.

All in all, I reckon I'm killing this gaming parent lark.

My 7 year old mostly plays Minecraft or the Lego games. My 17 year old plays Destiny 2 and GTAV online.

Now we've got an Xbox One, I'd imagine he'll be playing a lot of Roblox.

Mind don't play all that much, they like a good game of Mario Kart every so often and play a bunch of games on tablets when we let them have a bit of time on those, mainly Minecraft and a bunch of different Lego games (Friends Rush, some Ninjago stealth game etc.)

They would be all over Pokemon if I let them as well but middle child in particular tends to get a bit obsessed with stuff if we let him so we've generally limited the amount of time/access they have to games in general.

As I said, I didn't put a Parental block on her but I did do a few custom rules that you can tweak on an Xbox One, as in, No one can message her, or chat, or talk or friend her at all. She only has one friend on her Xbox and thats me.

She played Roblox in the past but that games if f**ked up, like she would be getting actually upset at how others treated her in-game, I found her playing a game where one person should be bullied, and it changes every 5mins, I deleted it, I talked to her calmly about why I did that and that gaming should never EVER upset anyone, that was over a year ago and she's never wanted to play it since or download it and now games with a smile on her face.

My eldest is only 2 so theres not much she can do but we play Disneyland adventures together on Xbox One. Its handy cos I can run around the park and then when we talk to someone she can do the dance or the handhake or whatever. She hates the rides part of it though, she gets bored and wants to go back to meeting princesses. We also play Mario Kart and Mario party on the N64 from time to time, she is utterly incapable of playing but she likes Mario so she just wants to see him on the tv really.

My oldest is 5, nearly 6, so still a little young and really only just getting started, bit of that Disney game on Game Pass and Coop Castle Crashers with me so far, which she finds hilarious.

My 3 yr old nephew seems to enjoy inflicting pain on himself with elastic bands. :shifty:

Back on topic: As I'm seeing a few mentions of GTA Online, Destiny and Fortnite, how does everyone's kids/nephews/nieces (particularly the younger ones) feel about micro-transactions?

roblox is pure evil gooseberry fool and I dont like it, Ive put as many parental blocks on it as I can but still full of people being little banana splits, its what everyone else plays so she wants to as well - and not gonna ban her

I use most of the xbox parental stuff but its a real strawberry floating hassle, constantly have to go along and sign myself in or put codes in or god knows because it does all sorts of stupid gooseberry fool

Yubel wrote:Back on topic: As I'm seeing a few mentions of GTA Online, Destiny and Fortnite, how does everyone's kids/nephews/nieces (particularly the younger ones) feel about micro-transactions?

she obviously isnt that bothered but Ive told her before she hasnt been allowed to play certain games because they are predatory and want to force us to pay money and its not gonna happen, which she understands

she has spent her own pocket money on minecraft coins and robux and I just tell her its finite and she wont get more when they are gone, so make sure they count and I think she gets it mostly

tangential - she asked us last christmas for a load of youtuber merch which was totally shot down. That gooseberry fool is nasty as heck, its one thing the kids watching but its another entirely into forcing them to waste their money of merch or be out of the club. If you see the vids they are relentless, buy this, buy this, make your mum buy this, get this
