The very reason I wasn't as fond of Tooie.

I got nostalgic and watched through the entirety of the recent AGDQ speedrun of Kazooie last night.

Nearly there now. I just completed the quiz, which was a bit of a pain.
Now I'm confronted with the 810 note door :x

Losing my momentum rapidly....might just youtube the final battle. :shifty:

Wow, have we got something special for you!

Many GRcadians joined in the recent playthrough of Rare's classic Banjo-Kazooie game and you may recall that our own The Watching Artist (AKA TWA... TWArio... and, occasionally, Matt) had spoken of producing some artwork to celebrate.

Well, the day has arrived. Here and now, in a GRcade world-exclusive, I am honoured to be able to unveil Matt's completed work:

Great stuff! It really captures that cartoon-adventure feel of the game!

Sometimes we don't always realise how talented many of our fellow GRcadians are. If you'd like to see more of Matt's work, check out his offical website here and his specialised Doctor Who art website here. In particular, take a look at his series of Doctor Who actors - such as this one, which is just terrific.

Really enjoying Tooie now. I'm just up to Jolly Roger's Lagoon. It is frustrating at times, the worlds are needlessly big in places and the respawning enemies have been a pain, but it still contains that Rare magic and really was a game ahead of its time. It's not really a platformer at all and if anything is more like OOT than Mario 64. In hindsight it could have been saved for the GameCube to really get the best out of it, as at times I think graphically it's weaker than BK.

Awesome stuff!

However..

The game has object pop-in so you shouldn't be able to see those characters nor the tree. A disappointing oversight.

Spent the entire day yesterday playing Banjo Tooie. I've virtually got 100% on the first five worlds now.

Really enjoyed Terradactyl Land it felt very similar to the style and tone of a BK level and the graphics and whole vibe of the level were absolutely brilliant and reminiscent of Jurassic Park! Would love to see Rare make a dinosaur game like this level. It is also a good level as it's been the only one thus far not to have any swimming sections in it ... Which brings me to ...

Jolly Roger's Lagoon - I really didn't enjoy this level, the scale of it is absolutely incredible and it really is a technical feat for the N64 as essentially it has an entire underwater section and a on-ground section which are both as big as anything in BK. However, the sheer amount of swimming made it un enjoyable for me and it also has a very poor boss fight.

I can really understand what the Watching Artist was saying about the game now, I can really appreciate Rare's ambition but the game is really not a platformer at all. It's much more keeping in design with something like OOT or MM and whilst I'm really enjoying it, I can't help but feel it's a shame that Rare never made a follow up more in keeping with the style of the original game.

Interesting stuff, Bill' - it sounds like you're making great progress. I've not started Tooie but I'm intrigued by yourself and TWA inducating that the game is quite different to the original. It seems that the swimming aspect does frustrate quite a few players. I'm keen to try this out one day!

I've also just realised its Terrydactyland!! Oh Rare...

With regards to the swimming Jawa it has improved since BK but at times it is needlessly fussy and I'm just not a fan of swimming sections in games full stop.

The game's a tremendous amount of fun when it's good though and I still can't believe how they got it all onto an N64 cartridge!

Was it me, or was the submarine aiming really off? I'm just on Grunty Industries which I hear is an absolute nightmare. Any tips?

I wasn't the sub for the boss fight. :dread: The hit detection of hit and miss for sure. Are you emulating or playing 360 version?

Tips....... erm. Be patient. This is the Water Temple of BK levels. Only with irritating enemies. Also make sure you check the outside of the building.

I'm playing the 360 version, I can't imagine how awful that boss would be without the sub!!! The hit detection was definitely off, I'd hit him loads of times and nothing!

So, it's like the water temple, but worse! Great! How long did it take you to complete it?

Oh I dont remember now. I had to go back a few times as there was a jigsaw which I couldn't work out how to reach. Also took me sometime just workout how to get in. :fp:

I was emulating so the aiming never quite felt right to me. In both games. So hopefully for you it feels better. I actually had to look up on the internet how to deal with the boss because I'd spent ages firing at him only to never hit. Actually on the subject of the 360 version. Did they change the FPS sections to twin stick controls? It's well weird nowadays. :dread:

:fp: at myself not starting this. Anxiety, social life, voluteer work and super smash bros wii u made me not want to start it yet.

Although I've got Banjo Kazooie installed on my Xbox One right now due to preview build, so I'll do that tomorrow after work (assuming no social life after). If I can use Twitch I might stream it.
