Observation #1 - there's no picture showing on my phone when listening to the podcast. It's just the bog-standard placeholder image. This is pretty upsetting.

Not a great start.

It will only get worse.

(In all seriousness I genuinely think there are some gems in our podcast, and the last maybe half-dozen episodes we've found our voice and really started to improve. But I think we'd all concede it's variable in quality, particularly earlier on. Hope you stick with it. )

Just finished the latest episode, which was quite enjoyable. Everyone managed to get their opinion across and it was quite well marshalled.

One thing I particularly liked was that there was some balance to the opinions on loot boxes, in that there are people out there who will only buy COD and FIFA during the year and their micro transactions are just seen as people getting more enjoyment out of their games. I think that often gets overlooked (by me as well).

Might have to go back and listen to all the other episodes now, damn you!

#24 - Nintendo's Wild Odyssey

Nintendo are dooo-ing quite well for themselves?! Karl, Kris (aka Cuttooth), and Adam (aka Ad7) are back again to discuss how Nintendo's 2017 took them by surprise with two massive achievements in the form of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey on the little Android tablet that could. Is this Nintendo back to their best? Where can they go from here and what does 2018 hold for them? Can anyone actually name most of the Mario Odyssey Kingdoms?

Even though i doubt i will ever get a switch that was an interesting talk - it made me think about what makes mario and zelda stand out; that they tell wildly different stories in different settings with a roughly similar cast of characters. This means they avoid the narrative escalation traps of having to make things even bigger and more bombastic while also dragging the cumulative plot along with them, something a lot of companies don't seem to deal with well. With each zelda you can break it down and start from the beginning as it were, and that cumulative but separate experience builds memory and appreciation for hyrule castle, the temple of time etc.

Also i'm sorry to say this karl, but you say 'like' quite a lot.

No need to be sorry, it's fair criticism! There's nowt I can do about it though. :P

I’m not always interested in the games discussed, but this was another great listen.

It doesn’t bode well for Nintendo that there really isn’t anything of interest to me in 2018. I hope they have some big surprises. Having said that, I still haven’t tried Mario Rabbids...

Great listen. I don't necessarily agree with how you guys felt on the Galaxy games but I understand where you're all coming from. Whilst the podcast was all about Mario and Zelda,it can't be underestimated the importance of Mario Kart 8, Splatoon 2 and Arms. Two big tentpole releases are awesome but the back up titles have also met the standard for me on what the Switch needs to accomplish. I don't think Metroid Prime 4 is the next big thing to be honest, no matter how good it is it will never shift the consoles like Mario and Zelda can. I'd be massively surprised if Super Smash Bros isn't in the pipeline for 2018.

There's no spoilers for Zelda or Mario in the latest podcast are there? Might give it a listen if not.

There might be Zelda spoilers IIRC. We tried to keep it clean regarding Odyssey.

Listening now (1st one i have tuned in to). Its good stuff, some nice insightful commentary and lots of building upon one another's comments - i hate it when group podcasts seem to be offering individual opinions without any consideration to those already made by others. Will make sure i listen to future episodes.

I'm pretty skint but can I really wait a few months for a twenty quid price? I don't think so, it'll be beans on toast every day for me for a while.
