Sounds like it’s going well! Do you know what Ghost types are available in the game? Or are you just waiting to see what you run into? It’d add another element of fun to it if you didn’t know what was available.

Edit, I guess if you class it then I’m currently doing a quick solo run of Crystal with a Typhlosion, nearly ready to tackle the elite 4 (just one more badge to go) then I’ll be blitzing through the Kanto gyms so I can get a third Celebi, I really should get around to transferring a couple of my favourite Legendary/Mythical Pokémon into Shield and train them up.

I know basically what Ghost types are available, but I'm not sure which are exclusive and which routes are on etc... Yea I didn't want to plan the team out too much, just wana see what I'll run into! This helps as well as places on my team are driven by merit, how much use have they been, have they pulled off any clinchers etc.

So far my Golurk, Efisio, has done much of the leg work battling wise, something I never thought would be the case when I first caught it!

Oh nice are you playing that on cart or via Virtual Console on the 3DS? How have you found your Solo run so far? Sounds quite difficult!

Back in the day I had Gold, and on VC I have Silver, I've never played Crystal, do you think it's worth picking up and playing as I already have a gen 2 game?

On the 3DS VC, sadly never had a cart of Crystal!

Gen 2 games are really easy to solo, obviously if you kept a Pokémon in its first stage or chose one of the few with awful stats it’d pose a bit of a challenge but with a Typhlosion it’s been really easy so far, solo-ing it with Meganium when it came out wasn’t much of a challenge once you’d got past the first couple of gyms which Chikorita/Bayleef are week too. I find with the poor level scaling of trainers it feels like you were only meant to play these games with a couple of Pokémon anyway, with a team of 6 I think you’d be quite below the highest level Pokémon in the league (lvl 50). Hard to say whether it’s worth picking up, it’s the best gen 2 game in my opinion but it’s obviously very similar to Gold/Silver.

Started my 'attempt to actually finish the game' run on Fire Red, went with the Charmander which I named Ignus.

Just arrived in Pewter City with my current 'mon:

Ignus - lvl 12
Aeriel (Pidgey) - lvl 8
Weedy (Kakuna) lvl 8

Edit: had to level up my 'mon by a couple of levels to beat Brock, they're now:

Ignus - lvl 15 - Metal Claw did the trick
Aeriel (Pidgey) - lvl 11
Weedy (Kakuna) lvl 10

Did you choose not to evolve your Kakuna?

Actually it had already evolved into Beedrill at that point, I just forgot to edit it in.

After a short but tedious trek through Mt Moon (grabbing the Moonstone and Helix fossil along the way), I have arrived at Cerulean City.

The Magicarp (Daenerys) I purchased from the strange fellow at the Pokemon center will soon evolve into an actually useful Gyarados.

Currently have the following 'mon:

Image

Also caught a Paras (called it Funguy) but can't remember if they're worth using. Forgot to pick up a Ratata to use as a 'utility' 'mon.

Ahh that's cool I'll have a think about whether it's worth it, but sounds like a challenge I wouldn't mind trying one day! I'd probably try it with a Meganium as well. :D

That's awesome glad to see you get involved Ironhide! I'll look forward to following your playthrough! :toot:

Great start to your run with your first badge! Brock can be surprisingly difficult if you choose Charmander, but as you said, Metal Claw seen you through! Also, love the names you've chosen so far! :D

Haha I forgot how annoying Mt Moon can be... those damn Zubat! Great choice with the Helix fossil, will you be looking to use the revived Pokémon on your team at some point?

Paras/Parasect can be useful during the earlier stages of your run definitely! It usually comes with the effect spore ability which has a chance to paralyze your opponent if they make contact with it. That can get you out of trouble sometimes!

Also it's really fun to sing "Paras, Paras, Parasect" to the tune of Coldplay's 'Paradise', so, y'know, there's that

Had a bit of trouble facing Misty as I didn't have any Grass or Electric Pokemon, so headed out in search of one and almost immediately found a lvl 14 Oddish (which I named Dr. Strange), went back and narrowly beat Misty.

Misty's a tough customer! That Starmie of hers is fast and packs a punch, and due to its Psychic dual typing, can wreak havoc on your team!

Great pickup with an Oddish and a great name! It won't be too long before you can get a leaf stone and evolve it from Gloom to then a Vileplume. A Pokémon that could come in very handy for your playthrough!

Ghost Type Sword Playthrough: Part 3

After obtaining my first badge, I head over to route 5 where I bumped into Team Yell again and had to battle them. Genuinely tough as my one opponent had evolved Dark types, while I was still rocking non evolved Ghost, I was taken to my limit and almost got annihilated, I got through by the skin of my teeth and a bit of luck.

I headed over to Hulbury where my next gym challenge would be. The leader, Nessa, had Pokémon up to level 24, meaning I didn't want to go higher than 26 ideally.

Before I took her on I headed back out to the Wild Area to do some raids. I find this a much better way to grind as you don't earn exp, but you earn exp candies which can be fed to a Pokémon of your choosing, meaning you can keep the leveling nice and even.

Image

Finally I was ready to take on Nessa and her Water gym. I managed to even out my team's levels, but I still didn't have an evolved Pokémon, I knew that her Drednaw was going to be tough as a result!

Image

I flew through her first couple of Pokémon easily, but that Dreadnaw was a real challenge, it's big, tough and packs a punch, plus it could out speed my team.

When it Dynamaxed it had the move "Max Darkness" a powerful Dark type move that ripped into my team. I made a couple of bad calls, one including using my Dynamax on a 'Mon that was already hurt, Dreadnaw one shot it so now I had to survive the fight without the use of Dynamax.

I had to sacrifice a couple of my team in order to revive the ones who had a better chance of doing some damage, then had to survive 2 more turns of Dreadnaws Dynamax. Once it returned to normal I knew I had a shot at taking it out.

Image

In the end I come out on top. Both Tajra and Timoti combined to clutch it for me. My second badge was earned! From here my playthrough hits it stride a bit. I can now catch Wild area Pokémon up to level 30, meaning quite a few of the overworld ones were now available to catch. My team can really start taking shape from here!

After a seemingly endless ordeal of random Zubat and Geodude encounters , trainer battles and wishing I'd bought some Repels, I emerge from Rock Tunnel and head for Lavender town and immediately realise I've left my only psychic Pokemon (Drowzee named Van Winkle) with the nursery.

My current team, plus the Paras used solely for Flash.

Named the Dugtrio before I noticed it was a female one.

Currently trying to blitz the 8 gym badges for Kanto so I can get my Celebi and 2 Megearna transferred to Home, jjst need 10 more Pokémon to complete my living dex then! No idea when I’ll be able to get those 10 though :(

This solo run of Crystal really makes me want to do yet another solo run of Sword though :fp: I shouldn’t even be considering one with BDSP just around the corner. My solo run has slightly morphed though, obviously only using Typhlosion but have always had 3 HM Pokémon with me (so I have all 7 available) and now got the Extremespeed Dratini with me using exp share to level it up, currently a level 40 Dragonair.

Ended up wandering over to Celadon city on a whim (not sure what I really should be doing atm)and beat the gym leader, then headed for the slots and am racking up coins with the intention of getting the Dratini.

Edit: Got the Dratini and also the Eevee which I missed the other than two occasions I've started Fire Red. Immediately gave the Eevee a thunder stone and named it Cora.

Ahh yes you're at the part of the game which a lot of people get a bit lost in, you can go for 3 or 4 badges in any order you like. When I play through Kanto, the order I do changes every time!

I'm curious, are you using a guide at all to help you stay on track?

No worries man, stick a post up here when you next plan to play! :D

Awesome man did you end up also using that Dragonite on your team as well? Also what level was your Typhlosion by the end?

Am I right in saying you can only get Celebi by playing Crystal?

Let me know when you class your run as officially over and I'll update the first post! :D

Officially in the gen 2 games, yes you can only get Celebi through the VC release of Crystal. All being well it’ll be tomorrow evening, as I said all I need to do (that I want to do that is) is catch Celebi and transfer my stuff over to Home. If I was in a rush I’d just change the clock on my 3DS but I’m not that eager to get them transferred over
