Snoke's ship being sliced in two by the New Republic ship ramming it in hyperspace is still the best set piece in the entire series.

The only good things are Old Luke is generally pretty cool, ghost Yoda and that Rey looks proper fit in it :datass:

EDIT - It is still better than Rise of Skywalker though. Dear me, don't get me started.
The worst bit? It's my 7 year old son's favourite film of the bunch, so it's always on. Kill me..

Oh yeah, Luke the guy who has exiled himself, severed ties with his Jedi past and generally done absolutely everything in his power to forget the past and be left alone - it would make perfect sense for him to welcome Rey and the lightsaber with open arms and be like "Awesome! I've just been waiting for you to come and get me, now lets bash some stormtroopers!"

Luke being a grumpy old banana split is the best and most realistic part of any Star Wars film.

Crait looks fantastic with that stark contrast of red against white. Luke's island is just a beautiful location in real life to have shot at. Personally it's pretty disappointing that so much of the movie otherwise takes place in empty space or the interior of ships otherwise I would probably agree with you on those visuals. As it is I think basically all of the films have some very good looking individual scenes/locations and its hard to single any one film out as significantly better. Even the prequels with their shiny CGI and mad lightsaber flips have their own visual appeal.

Of course the consistently best looking Star Wars content is the original 2D Clone Wars series but I won't start that again ;)

Each person's visual taste is obviously different but I'd say the locations you mention are so far above and beyond anything else in the series those alone would qualify it for the title of Best Looking.

BUT

Then you have the throne room, which is not only perhaps the best interior of any Star War, it is a set that evolves alongside the plot and gives us a visual representation of the story. As the anger in Ren begins to flare and his alliance with Rey falls apart, so does the set burn and collapse.

Red is also used throughout the film to show the presence of the Dark Side, in a similar way Coppolla used orange to symbolise death in The Godfather. It's in the throne room, on Crait, in the Casino. It is completely absent from Luke's island and the Rebel Fleet.

Then you have the Hyperspace ramming scene which is contentious but I don't think anyone can argue that the impact of it, the visuals and the soundscape, is one of the most effective moments in the films. Again, it's one of the best looking shots in the series.

Even when you are inside grey ships as you mention, you get shots like this:

Image

Not only does this effectively demonstrate Ren's power without a single line of dialogue, it's juxtaposed against Rey on the rain-blighted greenery of Luke's island. Both backgrounds sum up their characters and give the audience everything they need to know about their dynamic.

I honestly don't think there's a reasonable way to argue it's not the best looking of the lot.

Well, I don't expect him to hold a party and dance a little jig, but at least be like (and forgive the Rise of Skywalker writing style):
"..Where did you get this from? ...Who are you? How did you find me?"

And then refuse the lightsaber in a way that you'd imagine Luke that we remember would, and not toss it overboard like an arsehole.

The sequel trilogy, and particularly the last Jedi, are strawberry floating gorgeous in places (the throne room fight in 4k HDR is jaw dropping).

I don't like the last Jedi because I just don't like the story. It's a good film, but not one for me.
The rise of Skywalker is a gooseberry fool film AND a gooseberry fool story. That's the difference.

Kylo is the standout character in all the films, especially in the force awakens. When he stops that blaster bolt in mid air *chef's kiss*

"The Luke we remember"

It's been 30 strawberry floating years!

Also we know how she found him, and Luke has to know this already because JJ in all his wisdom decided that Luke would exile himself but also leave a map to show where he was. :fp:

Even if in the moment you find Luke's rejection of the lightsaber to be shocking it's a hard opinion to retain when the entire film goes on to explain why he would react in that way.

Unprecedented for Star Wars, a film series otherwise known for its gritty realism.

Honestly I think I got too distracted thinking the premise stupid to give the visual spectacle enough appreciation

Well that's kind of the point isn't it? Even in a franchise as ridiculous as Star Wars, Rise of Skywalker still manages to stand out for just how stupid and outlandish it is!

Jenuall wrote:There are lots of positive elements from a production perspective I guess - the locations, costumes, models etc. are all very good, and the cast themselves do their best with what little they're given. But anything to do with the actual movie as it unfolds - the narrative, the characters and their motivations, the events that take place etc. All pure trash.

Funnily enough this is exactly how I feel about rogue one

Pertaining to the TLJ discussion; I respect that film much than anything else outside of the original trilogy. For all of its failures in execution and all of its questionable writing decisions, it genuinely tries to do something different narrative wise, and not in the "im george lucas and im such a genius because im using an ancient story telling tradition" sense. Luke's character in that film was a particular highlight and was probably the best portrayal of a legacy character in the sequels (outside of the ANCIENT JEDI TEXTS moment which seemed out of character). This is helped by Hamil being a much much better actor than he was in the original trilogy.

Also yes the ship hyper speed ram is strawberry floating sick and one of the best star wars moments. The throne scene with snoke, kylo and rey is fantastic, though as a caveat it is worth noting that the following fight scene is really lacklustre, especially for a film that cost about a billion to make all told.

It was a shame that we didn't get the full showdown between Finn and Captain Phasma, the original plan for that sounded like it would have been much more satisfying.

I'm always genuinely surprised at how much love The Last Jedi gets. At least with the prequels I can see the points that everyone has; I enjoy them but they are deeply flawed films and its easy for me to acknowledge those faults. Yet with The Last Jedi I feel like everyone is watching a completely different film to me. It was the first Star Wars film where I left the cinema massively deflated.

One of my overall complaints with the sequels is the lack of consistency. It boils down to

Force Awakens - An OK, if a bit forgettable first film in a new trilogy
The Last Jedi - Doesn't really follow through on much that was set up in the first film. Does its own thing
Rise of Skywalker - Massively course corrects to bring it in line with what the writer/director was aiming for in the first film. It feels like the last film in a trilogy where there isn't a middle film

I'd genuinely had preferred the entire trilogy to be under the control of one writer or director. Either Rian Jonhonson or Abrams. At least then you'd have had a consistent narrative without jarring u-turns in the story each film

Please do not post this in the "No Context" thread

Same, but this is part of the reason I liked it. I felt more conflicted than I normally do after watching a dumbass disney blockbuster, which for me makes it an inherently more interesting production than the rest of these films.

I really don't get phasma. There was a bunch of gooseberry fool pertaining to her cut from the scripts of 7 and 8 right? As is it's not a character I care about. Finn on the other hand is a condensed mass of wasted potential and I really don't like what they did to him after 7.

The lack of control and direction that Disney showed in the sequel trilogy (and their handling of the franchise overall) is still genuinely baffling. It's like Kathleen Kennedy genuinely thought she could just shove out anything with the name Star Wars attached and it would work.

Which to an extent was right I guess given that Rise made over a billion at the box office!

Yeah I don't get her either, but then Star Wars fans have a history for building up characters based on very little actual screen time/content.

Bobba Fett does strawberry float all in reality in the original trilogy and yet the fandom found endless ways to fap over the guy.
