The Force Awakens and Rise of Skywalker both suffer from "make it bigger to raise the stakes!" thinking. Starkiller base is ludicrous just for how blatant it is, while the star destroyer armada is just... unnecessary.

I think with TFA they should have gone the opposite direction and had a star destroyer ship outfitted with a death star laser, explained as the First Order successfully scaling down the death star technology. That would have made sense as a technological progression, it would have still raised the stakes, and it would have helped fit with the (woefully unexplained) new status quo of the First Order as a surviving remnant of the Empire. Yeah they are no longer a galaxy spanning empire, but they are fanatics and even more dangerous!

I can't even begin to entertain the idea it might be on some kind of equal footing to something as epic as TESB, which runs the gamut of despair, betrayal, love, hope & loss - all happening to characters that we are invested in & are believable, well-developed and unique.

Mandalorian may have some nice moments here & there, but feels like chalk and cheese to me.

If you're looking for depth, then Star Wars is the wrong series for you...

Maybe, but TESB does have far more depth regardless. Definitely feels the most weighty SW film.

Probably one of the reasons why it's generally the most highly regarded.

Seriously?

That question exists (and has always existed) based on the logic within the series - it contradicts nothing we have learned already.

It's about self-consistency in what rules the fictional universe establishes about itself. A setting doesn't need to lay out its rules in full (and actually this is a bad thing to do), but anything it does establish should be consistent with the rest of the setting. Hyperspace ramming isn't a problem before TLJ because it is never put forward as a concept. One might consider the possibility, but equally one can consider there would be some in-universe explanation for why it wouldn't work - we simply don't know it, because we don't need to know it, because it is never a relevant thing.

TLJ makes it a relevant thing. It introduces some limited rules for hyperspace ramming, and those rules appear jarringly inconsistent with the established setting.

I agree with all this, yet I think it still works. Does it hint towards some difficult to defend in-universe inconsistencies? Absolutely. Does it earn the right to do that given its usage? Debatable. I say absolutely yes: that scene is one of the best in the entire series not just in look but as a plot device. It's a David and Goliath moment that illustrates that Big and Grandiose does not mean Powerful and sums up the entire conflict that's run throughout all the films.

But... I can see why people don't like it. Still, it's certainly less of a contrivance than Rise of Skywalker's Force Healing which has similar rule breaking implications but nowhere near the impact.

The Last Jedi is the best one. The fact it seems to rile Star Wars fanboys so much is just icing on the cake.

Any argument that hinges on "my immersion!" is definitely going to be of the your mileage may vary variety. For me it's jarring even within the plot of the film itself - if only they'd thought to do it at the start when they had two other ships to spare!

But yes... it's better than Rise of Skywalker

I can never forgive them obviously abanding a plot for Fin, a runaway storm trooper, is black, who may be gay, who is chosen by the force to become a Jedi, then overthrow his oppressor in phasma, then free the enslaved stormtroopers and become the hero of the story. No let's set that in motion, then just have an awkward love interest, then have him just kind of hang around Rey a bit, then do nothing.

The gang drowns in sand.

Except they don't because they fall through the sand to a worm cave underneath, begging the question of how all that sand is staying up there in the first place.

Hi, I'm Lando, I'm black, and as you're a black woman, you must be my daughter somehow, because all black people must be related somehow and the universe is only 5 planets in this anyway.

Hi Poe, I'm your ex. So you CAN'T be a gay, because you've done full sex on a woman and that's that. Now here's a special space token to start a ship thus justifying this chance meeting.

The Last Jedi had more heart and excitement in the first 10 minutes then rest of the trilogy. Force awakens was ok but once you see through the JJ member berries tricks it becomes very flat.

The last film was a joke. So much potential and so little done with it. It's also just a bad film.

The original trilogy holds up well, empire is perfect and jedi is fantastic but spoiled by a recently added Nnnoooooo.

The magic is still there, the TV shows all look good and have kept fans happy. I think a trilogy every 10 years and no soon off movies would work well. The world doesn't need another Solo.

Wish my image sig would work

Poe's interactions with the girl from Daft Punk are easily some of the worst parts of the movie, and given how awful the rest of it is that's saying something!

I'm not talking about immersion really. Call it dramatic licence.

You forgot one:

I'm Poe, played by a Latino actor, therefore I have a history of drug dealing!!!

Similar to my earlier point (and I said this at the time): if you have played any Star Wars game with Force powers and not thrown your controller down in disgust at Force healing, then you can't get upset at Force healing being a thing in the movies. It's entirely consistent within the universe.

You know what

(I can)

The EU is one thing, the films are another. The way it's introduced in RoS causes exactly the same issues as Hyperspace Ramming, as so eloquently explained by Orange.

The only thing that riles me is the insistence that if you don't like it somehow you don't "get it". Other than that, I've got nothing against people who do like it, it's just not a film for me and that's fine.

Please do not post this in the "No Context" thread

I think Force Healing is far worse than Hyperspace Ramming. What Holdo does is entirely consistent with what we know about hyperspace from the narrative provided in the movies, it's literally explained by Han that hyperspace collisions are a thing.

Force Healing just comes out of nowhere. The closest you have to some hint at it is with Obi-Wan touching Luke's head in A New Hope, but there's nothing really there to suggest that any Force power is at work.
