Jenuall - I appreciate the coming out of nowhere argument, although at some point every single thing that happens in any sci-fi or fantasy film has to happen for a first time and so will come out of nowhere. I argue that whilst this is somewhat out of nowhere in the films, it is quite well established in the EU and (as stated) I consider that acceptable canon until explicitly superseded. If I recall Spider-Man comes out of nowhere in Civil War and it's fine. In fact it's a great way of introducing the character because it doesn't require an Uncle Ben intro, but arguably you could say that is a very convenient state of affairs that isn't well explained. Ditto Iron Man's suit which is basically Go Go Gadget Extremis in the latter films.

Taf - which plot points does it invalidate? Honestly, off the top of my head I can only really think of Qui-Gon dying, Zam Wessel getting killed before talking and Anakin wanting to save Padme as anything remotely potentially affected by healing, but being able to heal doesn't mean nobody can ever die, and anything Palpatine says to Anakin is completely unreliable. But, going back to my original point, healing has been canon for decades, so any inconsistencies in those films (and I'm genuinely interested to hear what these are) already existed. They did not come into being in 2019.

Conclusion: is the implementation of Force healing bad filmmaking? Quite possibly, and it's not alone in that for various reasons people know far more about than me. Does it destroy the existing canon? Not that I can see...

Two of the points you mention are literally the entire basis of the original trilogy, as set down by the prequels. Those are pretty big points to invalidate.

I really feel we're talking about two different issues here anyway: you're talking about Star Wars lore, I'm talking about cinematic consistency. It doesn't matter that Force Healing has existed for decades outside of the film, because the way it's introduced into the films is the issue.

Regarding force healing causing plot holes, my understanding of force powers is that they aren't universal anyway. Rey being able to heal injury doesn't mean Luke should have been able to or Obi-Wan should have been able to. Maybe it's just an innate power Rey has achieved, much like we only see Palpatine use force lightning, or how he talks about Darth Plagueis gaining the power over life and death in that famously riveting scene.

I don't think the force healing was well done but it doesn't in my head retroactively introduce plot inconsistencies in the same way as the Holdo maneuver.

Again, I love that everyone just thinks TROS is gooseberry fool.

A mate of mine still can't believe I don't like the film, as he thought it was incredible.

I think it's a real strength of Star Wars as a series that so many of the subtitles could work interchangeably between so many of the films.

Take episode VIII for example, officially titled "The Last Jedi" but equally would work as "Return of the Jedi", "The Phantom Menace", or even (given it's uniquely subversive character) "Rogue One".

The wife watched the final trilogy over the past week and I inevitably caught a lot of it. Force Awakens was decent, the two that followed less so.

I think I have decided that everything outside of the original trilogy is cack and should be completely ignored, extended universe and all.

I enjoyed the Mandalorian recently but prefer to think of it as entirely separate, the more I have understood the extended universe and how it connects to the rest of the story, the less I care.

2. A New Hope
3. Return of the Jedi
