GRcade Task of the Week 31/08/2009

Welcome to

GRcade Task of the Week

This is a crazy new feature where I will set 1 weekly task for completion. We will try and use these tasks as interesting ways to affect our lifestyles and then reflect back upon them here. Some will be ridiculously easy. Others, more challenging. All will hopefully be interesting. Signing up to this week's task does not oblige you to sign up for next weeks. Do as many or as few as you like.

This week's task:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Task 1: 'Return to the Dark Ages'

Image

For one day, and one day only, you will learn to appreciate the finer things in life as you enjoy a 24 hour period where you cannot use any electric or technological devices. No X-Box. No MP3 player. No TV. No microwave. No car, bus, train. You may use your hob and oven for cooking (as you don’t have the equivalent fire-place of the dark ages) but you cannot even use a kettle or toaster. I will reluctantly allow light-switches and the use of sinks, showers, baths and toilets.

What will you do without all these modern things? Read? Walk? Talk to people? Not browse GRcade? Perhaps you will use the opportunity to spend some time in the great outdoors?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once you have attempted this task, reply back in this thread and tell us whether you succeeded, relaying your adventures, anecdote style.

How did you spend your day without technology?

Sign up if you want to give it a go. You have 7 days from today within which to complete the task. I will be doing it myself next weekend.

Could be difficult as I'm back at work tomorrow.

The more popular this is, the more dead GRcade will be for a day.

My thoughts exactly.

Can they keep a diary of their day or something? :shifty: All in ye olde speak of course.

I don't like the sound of this task. I get bored whenever there is a 10 minute power cut and it was also torture living without internet for two weeks last month, so I'm out.

I'm sure GRcade will not suffer too unduly from this exercise. I doubt the entire forum will sign up for this anyway.

Yes, a diary may be kept, but of course you'll have to handwrite it and then maybe type it up after the task is complete.

Another point has been raised about cameras. Should they be allowed so people can document their day for the thread's benefit?

A tricky one. I'll leave it up to each individual if they want to do this, but that's the only leeway I will give.

Phones, incidentally, are also out.

So might it not be interesting to challenge yourself for a 24 hour period? Doesn't it depress you that you are so reliant on technology that it takes a small power cut to destroy you?

Are we allowed to do this whenever we fancy over the next week? Or will there be an attempt for a synchronised switching off of plugs?

Any time you like within the next week, as and when it is convenient for you.

Well, I've got no plans whatsoever, so I may have a crack at this as soon as tomorrow.

Absolutely not. I like to spend my leisure time doing stuff I enjoy. My broken XBox has made my gaming life hell.

What if I walk into a room and the TV is on?

Also, i doubt I'll do this Mocky. Sorry, but call me when there's a "drink 5 pints of chocolate milkshake in an hour" challenge.

But what if doing this exercise/experiment challenges you in such a way that you surprisingly gain enjoyment out of it? If nothing else, it will be a memorable achievement (unlocked) to look back on.

:( See you in 3 weeks then.

Oh, and if you walk into a room and a TV is on.... walk out. Or don't look at the TV. Or turn it off.

Yeah, I kind of need technology for work. Especially computers, phones and photocopiers.
