I've driven scooters all over Asia, loads of fun but terrifying at times. Sri Lanka was by far the worst due to the narrower roads and insane bus drivers. As a rule though, if you're not confident, you should definitely avoid the bigger cities like Hanoi, HCMC etc. If you're in less busy, tourist towns on the beach or whatever, it's a lot easier though.

My mate hired a scooter for the first time in Bali, and was just given the keys and no instructions. So he put the keys in, turned it on, and held down fully on the throttle. The scooter took off, he drove straight into a low wall, he went up in the air over the handlebars and landed in the hostel's swimming pool while a bystander was left chasing after the scooter to stop it. :slol:

So, you know, if you do hire a scooter, don't do that.

Also bear in mind your travel insurance won't cover you if you crash and end up in hospital. Plenty of GoFundMe pages out there for people in comas who have no way of getting home.

Depends on the policy-you can normally have it added as a high risk activity but you do need a UK Motorcycle License. Obviously that will bump your premium and obviously most people don't have the license anyway. So make sure you're a good driver, or like someone I met out there bribe your doctor to change the details on the medical report after you've crashed...

The most I'll do is taxi rides. I can barely ride a bicycle so a motorized one is a big no-no :slol:

I'm still waiting on my work to give me the go ahead to book flights. A bit of a pain as they are no doubt going up each day. I think we will fly into Hanoi, then get our return flight at the same time but from Bangkok. Usually works out cheaper doing a return flight rather than getting two singles.

Go full Brits abroad and get a quad bike. Complete the look by not wearing a helmet.

I was thinking a week in April, (sounds even hotter), do you have an recommendations of things to do (trying to work out whether it's worth going to).

I depends what sort of stuff you're interested in. Taipei 101 is worth a visit, as is Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. There are loads of temples worth visiting in Taipei (I'm a sucker for East Asian temples). The night views of the city from Elephant Mountain (not far from Taipei 101) are great (take Mosquito repellent). I'd also maybe look at doing daytrips from Taipei or split your time between there and another city.

My biggest advice is give it more of a shot than I did. I went there straight from Hong Kong, travel anxiety kicked in and never really left until I moved on to Japan. Consequently I played it really safe and didn't do a lot of the stuff I had planned. It's my biggest regret of the holiday (that and not staying longer) as I feel its a country that has a lot to offer. The locals were friendly and the food was amazing. Except the stinky tofu. But then I don't like tofu so making it smell bad just made it worse.

Anyone been to Istanbul. The flights are cheap fro, north Cyprus.

Recon I could kill a few nights there quite easily by myself, would anyone have any tips? Maybe even I could hire a car and explore a bit of turkey?

The other option is tel aviv, but the flights are not cheap due to summer time.

Anyone been to Jamaica and able to recommend some must sees whilst we’re over there? Booked to go in July next year for our honeymoon so we’re looking into excursions etc for it now!

So what was initially going to be a week's camping with with the kids somewhere in the North of France has morphed into a 2 week 3 country trip. First real stop is just north of Lyon, then onto to the Italian side of Mount Blanc via Geneva. Then down past Turin onto the Med, doss about there for a bit before heading home via Avignon, Beaune and after that I'm not too sure yet...

We have only booked the ferry, the first night's accommodation (ferry gets into Calais at 12.30am so booked a F1 motel about an hour's drive away) and the first camp site. After that it will all be a bit fluid.
