I was reading a thing about a massive cycling trip (what I plan to do), and the guy actually came back in profit. Seems to be quite common actually. I don't expect this to happen, but I'm hoping about £3000 will last me over 6 months.

I spent AU$9000 over 6 months, $5000 of that over 2 and a half months in Europe. America's actually quite cheap; you get fed a lot for a reasonable amount, petrol's affordable and accommodation isn't too bad. New York is expensive compared to the rest of America, but I still found it quite cheap. I want to buy a car in New York and drive it down to New Orleans, acorss to San Fransisco, and then down through the rest of California to Mechico!

Hmm, that's about £5500 all in, according to the universal translator I just used to check it.

I think the plan for me would be to spend two or three months in America, pretty much doing the same thing that you want to do only with a different route: Spend two weeks in New York, get a car and drive it cross-country, then go down the West coast route from Seattle down to the bottom end of California, visiting San Francisco(Bay Area!), San Diego, Los Angeles and all the rest while I go. I'd love to do that.

That sounds great Mr. Yoshi. I'm hoping to do an interrail in Europe by myself for 3 weeks or so just to get a feel for what it's like to travel alone, and if I enjoy it (which I assume I will) i'd love to try something as ambitious as you did.

Sounds amazing. I have always wanted to do a road trip across America (I once did one half way across!). One day I will do it!

Places I might actually be able to afford to go would be Canada to kayak round the Great Lakes and Yellowstone Park.

If you're going to Kayak all the great lakes it would probably take something like over a month. Also Yellowstone is in the U.S.

The other thing I want to do is drive through New England at around this time of year - the autumn leaves make everything look absolutely amazing, apparently.

I've heard it's gorgeous there but utterly dull to stay at. Once you've seen some pretty trees and a couple of white colonial churches there doesn't appear to be a whole lot else. I want to go East, to South then to California. Not too fussed about LA. Never have been. But I just want to go around trying all the food, especially down south .

I love that America is just such a big, wide open place with so many different climates - the deserts and hot weather of the South-west like California, the rains of the North-west in Washington and Oregon, the cold and snowy areas in the North like Minnesota, and everything in between. The Yanks don't know how good they've got it. The pictures of New England at this time of year are absolutely beautiful. I'd love to take a week or so just to drive around, maybe visit Rhode Island and go through Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut et al. As Sandycoin says, there's not much to do but it looks so good!

It's just a shame the country is full of Americans.

And in Singapore again on the 3rd November for 3 weeks.

I'm hoping to go to Boston next Autumn or the year after to check out the Autumnal goodness.

Also next Autumn, a potential trip to New Zealand to coincide with the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Thinking of going Germany in February with a mate. Were going to Hamburg seeing as I have family out there but looking at Berlin now as well. Anyone been to either? Recommended?

Yep, it's easy. Hostels are suprisingly modern and cheap for the most part, with some of the worst being in Italy and by the far the best being in Peru. You meet people who have similar itineraries as yourself and travel with them for a few weeks before moving off in a separate direction and meeting a whole new group of people

Agree about the Peru hostels I stayed at Loki hostel in Cusco for 6 nights and it was so social and fun.

Thinking about heading to New Zealand some time next year. Has anyone else been?

I want to go to New Zealand next year as well. Thinking of going for about three weeks and timing it to coincide with the Rugby World Cup. It's the last country on my list of places I really want to visit. Looks incredible, and from people I know who've been, it sounds incredible too.

Anyone been travelling alone? Thinking of doing it next year at some point, so when I'm bordering on 19. Going alone and being young seems like a disaster waiting to happen.
