It's so beautiful. We were in Akumal, and the nearby town was really cool to walk to. The people are so lovely.

I've only been to Mexico once, but it's easily my favourite holiday. And I went to Butlins in Ayr back in the '90s!

I spent a month there when I was travelling. Truly wonderful place, so much to see, the people are great and the food is :datass:

We started in Mexico City and wound our way down visiting various towns before finishing in a Playa Del Carmen for a few days to chill. Did some amazing things there, best wss probably scuba diving in the cenotes. Terrifying at times even you're going through sections where the water reaches the ceiling of the cave but an unreal experience.

Would love to go back.

That sounds like a great trip! We've 'only' been around the Yucatan bit.

I'll post my snorkelling highlights when I eventually cobble them together, got some really cool stuff.

And yes, the food :datass: The Mexicans are always delighted when you ask for Mexican stuff, especially at breakfast time. They're usually serving Americans cake and and scrambled eggs like children. They're also so taken back when you speak to them in basic Spanish, because nobody else seems to bother.

Mexico is high on my list. Me and my gf were going to go a few years ago, but as we only had around 3 weeks we decided to go to Colombia instead (which was great). I think I'll go when I can take a month or so off so I can spend a good amount of time in Mexico City, Oaxaca, Yucatan etc.

Weather was between 28-30° most days, humidity sometimes making it feel like 35 :dread: (days like that admittedly were too much, but perfect for snorkelling). Stunning hotel, very tropical, almost like walking through jungle with the amount of vegetation surrounding the paths of the resort. Lovely stuff. Did a lot of snorkelling, and got a lot of great footage (apart from when the gopro would randomly corrupt the sd card and lose days of footage :( ).

I won't bore you with many pictures, but here's a few:

I got much better photos the last time we went as I had my DSLR And we got there a lot earlier so it was way less crowded. I did take a video camera this time though, so got some nice footage (whenever I didn t have someone stood in front of me :x ).

Generally speaking, is Mexico child-friendly (context) and roughly how much would it set one back for a family of three in a nice hotel, in a nice area (I don't have any knowledge of the country at all)?

I went to Mexico in 2007. It's a great place.

I stayed in an all-inclusive in Playacar which is a bit further north than Tulum. The hotel was so big and nice that I didn't really feel the need to leave, which is unlike me. It felt very safe.

When we did go into Playa del Carmen, which is the town, a bit further north it still felt safe but it had that American attitude to tipping. I also remember being absolutely bombarded by people offering to carry your suitcase when you get into the airport, it wasn't the best start to the holiday!

I would strongly recommend that anyone who goes should go to Xel Ha: https://www.xelha.com/ It's a beautiful fresh water lagoon where you can swim and the water is full of tropical fish.

Xcaret https://www.xcaret.com/en/ is also a good place to go.

I was disappointed they weren't in Horizon 5!

I still have my covid BA voucher to use by April and I was looking to book a trip in March but all this red list and test gooseberry fool has really put me of. I really think I'm going to lose the money

Depends where you go, it's a big place!

We went to Riviera Maya, near Cancun, and it was very child friendly. We were childless at the time, but there were loads of families there.

Hard Rock hotel. It was split into "heaven" and "hacienda", one side for families and the other side for adults.

It was a nice place, decent food and some good bars/clubs on site. We were not there much in the daytime though, we were off on trips most days.

There was one afternoon that we just drank all afternoon though. We started by one of the pools and then moved inside. The Americans were shocked by our drinking, more than one group of them said "oh my god, are you guys still here?"

We drove past on the way to ours. I did ask the Mrs if it would be good, but as it's kid friendly, we woudlnt go. From what I've seen it looks proper good fun. Our first few times to Mexico were loaded with trips, which is why we tend to not do as much when we go now.

The drinking, fuuuuuck the drinking. We've calmed down a lot now, but we always seem to have a mental day around day 3 when we're past most of the jet lag, where we just drink solidly all day, mixing cocktails beers and tequila, then wine with out evening meal before moving on to martinis in to the night :dread: The day after was fun this time, felt awful. Much much calmer this time. Although saying that, I was filming us walking back on the really pissed day and I don't remember what we were doing, but the thumbnail for that video is me in the room with a towel on my head and I distinctly remmeber my Mrs flashing her tits  We'll save watching that for a while for maximum cringe.

Back from Rome and it was awesome. What a city.

Really glad I read a couple of books on Roman history before I went as it really enhanced the experience. Had a brilliant guided tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum which was awesome.

Was walking about 12 hours straight for each of the days I was there so my feet are strawberry floated. No idea how you missed the sistine chapel in the Vatican no1ff

I honestly wasn't that blown by the ceiling though :shifty:

Every street you go into there's another historical artefact/piece of cool architecture, it's pretty wild.

Amazing food recommendations - think I went to all the casual places you mentioned. Hit one of your gf recommend gelato places too and had maybe my best ice cream ever- was the tobacco chocolate flavour one. Incredibly smooth and not too sweet. Woild have to dig out which shop it was I went into though.

Those fried rice balls were super tasty. Same with the cacciatore, the chicken was so tender. Pizza rossa was also lovely. The carbonara at Pasta Imperiale was so fatty and salty, was strawberry floating great

Edit: was Fatamorgana

Mexico was the first place I had ever seen karaoke being done with a full band. That was an awesome night, the closest a tone deaf talentless twat like me will ever get to feeling like a rock star.

Italy (especially Rome) is somewhere I have to go one day. My brother went there a few years ago and I'm so jealous that he's seen all that history.
