I love active trips like that. When we went to Pisa we spent a long weekend constantly walking around.

Simon Baker's book in particular provided a great, very readable overview that primed me perfectly to feel as though I got the most of it.

Eating street food was cheap as strawberry float too, even with loads of tours and things I only spent about 200 quid.

Oh and I went to Nero's underground palace/city which sounds cool but you have to do the tour and strawberry float me the guy was boring. Was painful, just wanted to wander off by myself.

Really glad I read a couple of books on Roman history before I went as it really enhanced the experience. Had a brilliant guided tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum which was awesome.

Was walking about 12 hours straight for each of the days I was there so my feet are strawberry floated. No idea how you missed the sistine chapel in the Vatican no1ff

I honestly wasn't that blown by the ceiling though :shifty:

Every street you go into there's another historical artefact/piece of cool architecture, it's pretty wild.

Amazing food recommendations - think I went to all the casual places you mentioned. Hit one of your gf recommend gelato places too and had maybe my best ice cream ever- was the tobacco chocolate flavour one. Incredibly smooth and not too sweet. Woild have to dig out which shop it was I went into though.

Those fried rice balls were super tasty. Same with the cacciatore, the chicken was so tender. Pizza rossa was also lovely. The carbonara at Pasta Imperiale was so fatty and salty, was strawberry floating great

Edit: was Fatamorgana

Awesome, glad you went to them and liked them. I often give recs to people who ask for them, then they don't go and say they weren't impressed by the food in Rome.

Yeah Fatamorgana is good. My favourite there is the pecorino and orange peel

I looked out for that one and don't think they had it! Did have a lovely almond and strawberry one though.

Place called Mizio was great for breakfast too. Gave me basically a loaf of bread loaded with cheese, ham and tomatoes, was great quality.

Wonder if those folk are hitting the tourist traps, food quality seemed really high to me.

For anyone else going, I thought the Capitoline museum was well worth it too.

That's a shame they didn't have it. That is sadly often the case with that flavour for whatever reason.

Yeah food on the whole is of a high quality, but there are a lot of gooseberry fool restaurants in the major tourist areas, such as Trastevere. I understand people going to them, especially if they are tired or whatever, but it's always a shame to hear them go to them rather than look a little bit harder.

Did you manage to have time to visit Pompeii?

Nah I thought about the place you suggested until the final day but would have meant skipping the Capitoline and a few other buildings. Figured I'll come back at some point anyway.

Plus tbh by that point I was pretty knackered from non stop walking, museum day was a nicer way to unwind before my evening flight.

Also last post on it - the mask compliance was incredible. Even outside the majority of folk were wearing. Felt very covid safe.

I'm meant to be off to Canada on Saturday. Normally I wouldn't go at this time of the year, but my parents are visiting my brother and my gf is going back to England, so thought why not? Dreading the cold, especially as I'm supposed to be going to Montreal and Quebec, and they are already in the minus 5's and 10s with snow storms.

The new rules for Canada are annoying though, so not sure if I will make it to Montreal. I pre-booked tickets for 2 days after land, but they are now meant to be making you do a test when you arrive that can take 3 days to get and you have to isolate in the mean time. They still haven't properly announced it or implemented it yet though..

I still don't know how I missed most of the Vatican City but never mind ha.
I figured out how to get tickets for the bus on my 3rd day, so from then on I walked much less. Seems a bit third world that you have to buy tickets from newsagents or train stations to board the buses. But tbh no one ever checked tickets so I could have used the buses for free.

Off to Madrid for the first time in a couple of weeks. Just a long weekend.

Also just booked the most expensive hotel room of my life. Got the polar bear suite at Pairi Daiza in Belgium for my birthday. Feeling poor but very excited!

Off to Split for a week in April, can't wait. Looks like so many cool things to see and do. It's partly for 'work', so I'll be travelling on my own, but I'm just happy to be doing something, anything.

I want to go too. A friend complained that there was no river like you'd usually get in capital cities so it felt extra hot and dry.

Lisbon's lovely. Great food too (including amazing Indians, randomly enough).

I don't have any Madrid tips sorry - went with hard drinking mates so wasn't my usual touristy style trip. Saw basically strawberry float all. Took the train to Toledo which was worth it, really cool unique city. The main park in Madrid was worth a visit too, really nice statues.
