Right, who wants to help me figure out what to do this Winter holiday? Basically I've got 7 weeks off Uni starting on the 10th of January, and I want to spend that whole time travelling, but I'm not sure what to do.

I'm currently living in a city called Dalian in NE China:
Image

I know I'm gonna head up North to the Harbin Ice Festival first to see such crazy gooseberry fool as this:
Image

Afterwards though I'm at a wee bit of a loss. My options for the 7 weeks are thus:

1) I can get a ferry to Icheon in S Korea from Dalian, then spend time meeting up with friends and travelling round there before heading back and braving the entriely mobilized Chinese population. I don't speak a word of Korean though, and would probably be travelling on my own.

2) Travel to a city that has ferries running to Japan, or possibly grab the ferry from S Korea to Japan depending on prices (Japan will be very pricy, mind). Same lang. probs. as kin Korea though, so after leaving friends I'd be on my own.

3) Head as far South in China as I can before 1 billion people decide to get the train to travel home for New Year AT EXACTLY THE SAME TIME, and maybe hole up in Hong Kong or somewhere suitably warm for a while.

4) Head down to SE Asia, and attempt to get into places like Laos, Cambodia etc. Advantages being they're warm and cheap, disadvantages being getting Visas and gooseberry fool will be a strawberry floating hassle.

Any ideas/recommendations?

I'm thinking of doing a bit of travelling around China/Japan (possibly Korea) in the summer so anything you know about getting around, and between, the countries would be helpful.

Well, I'll (hopefully) be able to tell you in a few weeks mate. I'm living in a pretty dull and dirty city at the moment and I'm itching to get back out and see the people/countryside that first attracted me to this place. I can't remember the last time I saw a pretty view.

AlphaEx went to Jap. recently though, you should ask him how he got around and other such tips.

You've obviously only been to the South. Wait until you come to the North sonny. Llandudno and Rhyl will have you breathless.

The only problem I have with going to Russia mainly Moscow is I would rather visit the place with someone that has lived in Moscow and speaks the language. I have heard stories about the police and would feel better with a local. Also they would know the best places to go/eat etc.

I was actually looking at doing a teaching placement in Dalian this summer. I decided against it as they wanted a load of commitment without giving a lot of details first. It's cold there in the winter from what I remember reading.

When do you finish your year in China? If I do end up doing my little trip (which I really want to) then I'd probably be going as soon as I finish Uni: around the middle of June. It's far from definite but if I do go then would you be up for travelling some more with me?
