We're such a cliché

I was planning to go out and do that sort of roadtrip alone in May/June this year after putting it off for ~10 years. More annoyed with myself for not doing it sooner than anything.

In a mustang

It was one of the best things I've done.

We also did something similar, in a mustang strawberry floating tourists

We did Vegas > Zion national park > flagstaff > grand canyon > monument valley > Sedona (wedding) > Vegas

Lots of bits inbetween.

I did the very short drive (in a Mustang ) from New Orleans to Mobile (family live there) 5 years ago and really enjoyed it. Being on the road in America is very enjoyable and would love to go back.

It does depend on where you are. I did another trip where I went from Chicago > Detorit > Niagara > Pittsburgh > NY and it was pretty dull to drive because it was all just highway with no scenery.

California is incredible to drive through though.

@Dual - I think Colorado is a definite, not sure about the order of the rest but my wife has a great set of routes planned out.

I know, you could almost hear the groans of the car hire guy while we were choosing which one to have. There was a yellow corvette with black stripes that we were going to have, but the bags w ouldnt fit in the back with the roof down, so we had to 'settle' with the mustang. Driving up and out of Zion, on a windy set of switchback roads, with the top down and freebird playing. Actually had tears of joy, amazing stuff. Didn't stop me stopping every 5 mins to take photos

Did the same thing going down Big Sur, photo every 5 minutes.

It really makes the travel part of the trip as much fun as the destination. The US trip before that we went cheap and got a jeep, which is one of the most hateful cars I've ever driven. Utter bag of gooseberry fool that thing was. Driving in to Miami was fun with their 40 lane wide highways, with terrible visibility and a laggy throttle. Oh and Americans sitting comfortably back from you, then the second you indicate to change lanes, they boot it to draw along side you and block you. At least out in the open you barely have anyone near you and can just enjoy it.

We've talked about doing the whole coast of the UK for a trip, which would be something different, but I fear a lot of the roads are going to be gooseberry fool to drive.

We did the same Vegas/DV/Californian road trip although on a budget so I don't even remember the car. Some generic as strawberry float one. Still incredible though.

I rented a Mustang and drove round California, Arizona and Nevada in mid-2014. Came to Japan not long after and started dating a girl who's Dad had a thing for Fords (which is a weird niche here) and one of his cars was a Mustang.

I'm bad person as I wanted to break up, but that one thing in her "Pro" column probably outweighed a lot of other stuff for longer than it should have, and kept the relationship going.

All I needed was a tragic yachting accident and it could have been mine.

Chicago to Niagara is a dull as strawberry float stretch. Going down to Pittsburgh and NY though I find to be a great drive, loads of winding hilly roads. But yes, California is by far the most fun. Apart from driving in LA of course. I stayed in Venice and had dinner in downtown LA and it took 1.5 hours to drive

I drove around Oahu in a Mustang a couple of years ago. Bright red, soft top, flippin' gorgeous. Never got it up to speed, because the limit was 55 everywhere we went, but Christ it got there quick. The sound of that engine is etched into my brain.

I've even got a photo of it stuck on my bedroom wall.

Has anyone ever rented a mustang on holiday? Curious to know if it's any good

We talked about buying one when we got back from that trip, and every quickly realised that in the real world, it's cost a strawberry floating fortune in petrol (It cost £120 total in fuel for 2.weeks in the US ), and where can you realistically enjoy a car like that in the UK? Certainly not.where I live, going 5mph behind some split on the M4.

Me and my brother went over with my mum for her 60th a few years back and did a similar trip but we weren’t anything like as cliched as you two.

No, we did it in an Escalade.

So, got back home yesterday and now doing the quarantine. That was a blast. However, it appears most of Germany had the same idea as me and instead of flying to Spain/Greece, they decided to get in huge campervans and drive all over the shop. The ferry over was empty, we only saw 2 UK registered plates on the way down.

1st night - Lille
2nd night - Cochem, Germany
3rd night - Isny, Germany (via Luxembourg)
4th - 5th night - Torri Del Benaco, Lake Garda. Nightmare drive via the Brenner pass. What should have been a 5hr 270 mile trip ended up taking over 7 hrs and the last 5 miles or so were spent driving in a storm of biblical proportions



6 - 8th night - Rovinj, Croatia
9 - 10th night - Krk, Croatia
11th night - Venice with a little trip out to Burano
12th night - Lake Idro
13th night - Mandello di Lario, Lake Como
14th night - Cannobio, Lake Maggiore
15th night - Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland
16th night - Lac de Longemer, Vosges, France
17th night - Metz, France
18th Day - stopped off at Laon on the way back to Dunkirk.

So in total that was 2758 miles and 10 countries (if you include driving in the UK to get to Dover).
