I was actually looking at doing a teaching placement in Dalian this summer. I decided against it as they wanted a load of commitment without giving a lot of details first. It's cold there in the winter from what I remember reading.

When do you finish your year in China? If I do end up doing my little trip (which I really want to) then I'd probably be going as soon as I finish Uni: around the middle of June. It's far from definite but if I do go then would you be up for travelling some more with me?

I've played on the Dalian map from Battlefield 2. Sadly that doesn't count in visiting the place!

I'd definitely advise not doing moscow by yourself. Some parts of it (i suppose... like any city... but more so) aare extremely dodgy. I would not walk around by myself there. The police are extremely dodgy. I've heard a lot of friends who are russian and live there talking about problems they've had with police bribing/threatening them.

Lovely place if you go to the right bits though. Red square and the surrounding half mile in each direction is simply stunning in the sun

Guess I have been boring so far.

Been to:

Russia (Moscow, Aleksin)
Germany (Berlin...obviously...and around, Frankfurt (both), Blackforest, Bavaria, Baltic Sea, Northern Sea, Saxony/Leipzig, Bonn)
Austria
Switzerland
Italy (North and middle, never south...)
England
Ireland (NI and RoI)
Wales
Mallorca ( :fp: how very German..)
New Jersey & NYC

edit: I forgot to mention:
Czech Republic
Poland

Where I'd like to go:
the whole wide world. including scotland and Norwich.
(only those having listened to Bill Bailey and Anne Dudley will know what I mean :D)

Trips that are actually planned to go through with a friend...to a certain extent:
London - Moscow; transsib to Irkutsk and go to the lake... then continue on the transsib to Vladivostok, back to London
London - Alexandria; buy a car and hike down to Johannesbourg (sp?); sell it and fly back to london
London - US east coast; buy a car (again), drive to the west coast (kerouac ftw!); sell car, fly to Alaska and somehow get over to canada. Might skip alaska though, if that is impossible. Fly back to London.
Trip through south-east asia (malaysia); possible route: thailand and southwards
Trip through india
similar trip through australia (buy/sell car).

This is going to cover a few years.... :D
at the moment we're only planning on doing it ourselves (just her and me), to keep the flirt options as high as possible, but we might need a car mechanic. at least when i think of what I recall from the Top Gear special episodes ;)

Not all that impressive really. Portugal was when I was a baby as well so I don't think it counts. These next few years are when I plan on doing a bit of sightseeing.

Well screw Japan, I just found out they take your fingerprints when you enter their country, apparently it's an "anti-terrorism" measure

They still haven't implemented it, at least I don't think they have. Just a few years ago you could cross the border with just a Canadian drivers license.

Maybe for Canadians, but I've just been to the US and they take a full set of finger prints on both hands and take your photo.

Two recommendations for you:
"You shall know our velocity" by Dave Eggers (they do exactly that) and
"On the Road" by Jack Kerouac...I practically inhaled those books

Apparently they only do that if you fly into the country.

So my brother and I are looking for places to go to on holiday. We both like the idea of somewhere in Canada or the US, and while we've looked at Vancouver, I'm not sure I'll be able to afford it bearing in mind when we're looking at going (this summer). Does anyone have any suggestions of anywhere in the US or Canada that they can recommend?

We've been to New York before and Florida, so those are out this time, but I'm open to any recommendations. Cheers.

What's putting you off? I'd go back in a shot if I could. Loved it there.
