Morning all,

I've started following "The odds man" on Facebook since I've watched a friend turn his £25 stake into £1000 a couple of times based on this guys "£25 to £1000" challenge.

Figured it's only £25 may as well try it.

But, I'm fairly new to betting. What sort of game is good for betting on these days..
I'm not into football, but happy to take a punt on results etc..

We've all had a go on those challenges, and obviously they very rarely work out. By all means have a go, but the chances of making it to a grand are slim. If it was easy everyone would do it! Also, you need some serious stones at the tail end of the challenge to bet those high amounts.

If you're new to betting I'd recommend opening a couple of new accounts, quite a few sites offer new account bonuses and free bets. Do make sure to check out the small print and make sure you'll be able to withdraw your winnings if you make money on those first freebies.

As for what to bet on, that all depends on personal preference really. We mostly tend to back football on here as we're fairly knowledgable on it, but if you're big into ice hockey or something then go for it. Have a play around at low amounts before you get comfortable, most sites make things fairly easy to understand.

Any questions just ask, folk in here are always happy to help if you don't understand something about odds or a type of bet or whatever.

Good luck! :)

EDIT - The OP here has loads of good info too, make sure to check that out.

What's the longest you've ever held onto a winning bet?

Just cashed out a bet for £10 profit after it looked like Plymouth was going to strawberry float it... Then they scored on the dying seconds, now if Everton beat leciester I'll be suicidal!

It was mentioned on the BBC the other day that if you'd had a quid each way on every horse in the national for the last ten years, you'd be in profit. Just shows you how random that race is.

I had a handicap bet on the Aston Villa - Birmingham game of +1 to Birmingham. With Villa winning 1-0 should I not get my stake back?

Depends what sort of handicap bet you did. If Asian then yes you should get your stake back, if the alternative handicap you'd have won off a draw but lose off villa winning.

Thanks mate, I forgot it was the Asian handicap that works like that.

Had a bit of dollar on Velios to score for Forest tonight. For some reason Daryl Murphy is the favourite to score on Bet365 despite not being in the starting line-up or on the bench.

Apologies for the large bump. Skybet are doing a rather good special for Cheltenham this week where they're doing refunds on losing bets for the first race every day up to £20. What's unusual about this is they're paying it back in cash, so this really is a risk free bet.

I've gone with Angels Breath at 6/1. :-)

I've got the following tips from an actual horse trainer my friend's girlfriend works with:

1:30 fakir d’oudairies
Hacked up at the track last time and could’ve gone for the triumph but owner keeping him and sir erec apart - he gets an age allowance and will like the conditions

2:10 glen forsa
Won nicely at sandown last time beating Kalashnikov and is improving at a rate of knots, soft ground and two miles no problem for him

2:50 give me a copper
ran a blinder after a lay-off last time and his trainer thinks he has a massive chance so that’s good enough for me

3:30 apples jade
Never better than this season and stays further than two miles so soft ground could even help - also has a 7lb allowance from buveur d’air while laurina needs to improve plenty

4:10
Benie des dieux is the one to beat but she’s odds on, so her stablemate stormy Ireland who goes in soft ground looks a good price each way at 9/1

4:50 a plus tard
Has big field form and is an improving five year old for her powerful connections - won on heavy in France as well so conditions will suit

5:30 ok corral
connections have a cracking record in the race - stamina is the only question mark but he could be a class apart

Thank me later.

Well my bet didn't come in, but my £20 refund was paid back swiftly. People really need to be getting on this, it's totally risk free betting!

William Hill sent me a free £20 bet so I've actually gone for two horses in today's race, Champ and Battleoverdoyen.

Made 50p profit on the Grand National so just shoved 50p onto Brighton to win (they’re losing 1-0 at half time). 75/1
