It's because Great Britain encompasses England, Scotland and Wales. It's kind of like Greater Manchester. The place is rubbish, but includes a lot of small places.

No it's because there are two main parts of the British Isles, teh land mass making up Ireland, and the land mass of Great Britain. "Great" because it is larger than Ireland.

In my year in New Zealand, I think I saw about 10 women who didnt look like they were hewn from the mightiest tree trunks and had faces carved with axes.
