On that note, does anyone else find bulking more challenging psychologically? Obviously eating lots is good but when you've spent a while losing weight I find it hard to want to put on weight even though I know I look too skinny.

I definitely struggle with gaining weight after a period of dieting. It’s hard to not feel like you’re losing what you’ve spent ages working for and I’m always second guessing whether I’m gaining too much fat and not enough muscle.

The cut I just finished up is my second including my initial big weight loss from being a chonky boi (having done nothing since uni) a few years ago, so I at least know I can do this again.

I also mentioned before that I think I gained too much weight (or thought my body fat was lower than it was) at the end of my bulk and hopefully I won’t make that mistake again.

I think setting a time limit for your bulls and cuts also helps you make the most of them and stops you living that permabulk life.

I guess it's that natty life - feel too skinny when you cut and too fat when you bulk.

Last year was my first 'proper' bulk. Previously I'd just go up 8-10 pounds then cut because my visible abs were gone. I actually think this is worse as you just end up not really committed to anything. While I was uncomfortable at 200lbs I surpassed my expectations with strength gains so I'm conflicted. Looking back at my diet and was just eating gooseberry fool to get calories in this time I'm sticking to my current meal plan and just adding in dried fruit and fruit juice for easy extra calories that can be added and taken away easily.

I guess part of the fun is trying things and learning from it.

On the subject of the cleaner calories - I’ve been paying more attention to my meal and protein timings this week and the combination of that and going back to training with much heavier weight than I have done for the past 3 months has made a marked change in my physique. I imagine it’s largely down to muscular swelling but I’ve gone from looking flat to my muscles being much fuller and getting some separation in in my quads. It’s super motivating.

I’m still eating at maintenance - I went on holiday two weeks ago and any semblance of a diet went out the window, but today I’m back at what I weighed before going and am just riding out any easy gains from being back in the gym before adding any calories in. Hovering around 2500 cals a day and feeling great!

I hated bulking. Felt ill after dinner every night and was never hungry. Hated cutting too as I got a bit obsessed with it all and got frustrated with myself if I 'messed up' which wasn't a healthy outlook.

In regards to cleaner calories, I noticed a huge improvement on my strength and size when I started not caring about clean and just cared about calories. I know that makes sense on a calorie point of view but it made me realize you can make gains to an extent without having to eat clean all the time.

I'm don't eat clean in a 'chicken, rice and broccoli' way, just not eating Burger King, flapjack, chocolate, etc for every meal just to get the calories in. Having said that I always tracked my food and went for 1lb a week so it wasn't out of control, I'd just like to see what a greater quantity of 'better' food could achieve.

*Edit* I'm struggling to get plates for my home gym, what do you guys think out of buying laser cut steel plates, getting bumper plates that will be back in stock at the end of the month or waiting for cast iron plates? I've managed to get four 25kg cast iron plate with four 15kg plates and 2 1.25kg plates on order.

What would the difference be between cast iron and steel?

I'm not sure to be honest other than size. I've read some stuff saying you should avoid them but I'm pretty sure it's just people being snobbish.

I haven't got a clue about Iron vs Steel. I'd probably go with whichever is cheaper so long as they're made by a half decent manufacturer and try and find out how accurate their plates are - I wouldn't be too worried but very cheap plates will probably be a waste of time. I'd probably start with Strength Shop but Rogue are surprisingly competitive on price so worth a look.

Oh yeah ensure they are the right height. No point getting small plates.

A bit disappointed in my gym yesterday. They've given up the booking system and its turned back into a free for all, the same idiots not only not wiping down equipment but leaving their plates and crap all over the place. It's a shame people are abusing it so soon.

Saw a lad from my old bodybuilding gym in the street the other day, continual closure of gyms in Scotland has not been kind. He always ate like on a bulk but lifted like crazy, think no weights caught up with him quick!

I half expected it because my gym is an absolute dump to begin with, but mine’s the same now.

Very disappointing and I think I’m going to change gyms because of it.

I was more disappointed because my gym is awesome. Thankfully it's been a one off. They've actually done something really cool and written a thank you letter for everyone who kept up their payments throughout Covid and put it in a package with a shaker that they've had made with the gym logo. I thought that was a really nice gesture considering the amount of work and new equipment they've managed to get in during lockdown.

Lifts are feeling much nicer, In really glad I started lighter than I wanted to as I feel like my form has improved and strength is coming back nicely.

Glad to hear it. Mine is still a dump, unfortunately.

My shoulder is also not feeling too clever, unfortunately. I tried switching to dumbbell press but it seemed to like that even less so I’m having to take a break from pressing and rethink how I get back into it.

I’m thinking about trying to hit a 2x bodyweight deadlift while I’m still quite light. I don’t think it should be too hard at the moment, as it’s only 155kg but I’m not very good at deadlifting and have never truly hit 2X as have only done over that at heavier bodyweights.

One of the blessings of lockdown was the rest for my shoulders. Have you tried pressing on a smith machine or Viking press? I find I can get myself into position where it doesn't hurt.

How's the deadlift coming on?

I haven't tried a smith and don't have access to a Viking. Gym has been closed due to a bit of the stupid roof flying off during a storm, so have been training at home again while I wait for them to cancel my membership.

I did a floor press as thought the reduced ROM would be safer for my shoulder and that helped. Push ups are fine too.

Anyway, I'm annoyed with my crappy gym and trying my best to find a new one. Still hovering at maintenance without having to put much thought into it, though, which is good.

You eating enough?
Not overdoing it in each session / quantity of sessions?
Did you change to a new routine, could it be DOMS?

Don't be afraid to listen to your body. I'm finding i need to give myself an extra rest day about every 3-4 weeks, especially when the weather is warm. Even though I feel rested I must be sleeping a little bit worse.

Yes, eating too much if anything :slol:

Not doing more than 3 sessions a week.

Have just started a new routine the past few weeks. So likely to be that?
