Given the state of your spine, mandatory gym closure or not, you need the time off to let yourself heal.

My spine is feeling 100% back to normal now, but after tweaking it at the end of August, I was feeling discomfort just doing light deadlifts.

With your injury severity I'd doubt even returning in January makes sense.

I've been keeping myself busy with lower weight/higher rep lifting with my home equipment and outdoor running. Feeling fairly good about it for the time being but definitely hoping the gyms reopen in a couple of weeks!

How long were you out of it? The numbers holding up?

strawberry floating hate hot gyms man, loads of continental places run their heating through to about April. Bloody nightmare.

Managed an hour long walk the other day with no pain for the first time in months 8-)

Just over a month but still using my stuff at home (no rack, no bench).

Not sure on numbers as I did a fairly light reintroduction session. Feeling good though overall.

Really glad to hear about your pain-free walk. So gooseberry fool that your body is so strawberry floated up.

Good to hear it, light first sesh back is definitely the way to go.

I try not to get too angry about it as it's entirely my own fault. Attempting to channel the feelings that strawberry floated my back from lifting heavy, into doing never ending planks so my core is strong enough to complete such arduous tasks as picking up pens dropped on the floor!

I made a rookie mistake and assumed my body would be relatively fine with doing my usual weights. Managed 2 days and my arm is kicking out some strange pain, by my elbow. I don’t want to play the waiting game because I love food and cans at Christmas, and we’ll be locked down again in January.

If you live near Manchester you'll soon be able to add surfing to the list of ways to keep fit.

I put on 3-4kg over Christmas since I ate as much as humanly possible and didn't run for 3 weeks, and have now adjusted my diet to help get things back down again. One major change is to stop having a sausage, bacon and fried egg sandwich each day around this time - but this now means I'm really cold as I work in the kitchen and the heat from the oven would warm up the room, so had to put a jumper on. :(

What happens to bodybuilders when they stop training?

https://www.fitfreak.online/2020/12/the-7-professional-bodybuilders-who.html

You don't often see articles showing what happens the other way around! There's nothing particularly interesting to learn here, but I found it quite fascinating to see the differences.

How is everyone doing with home workouts? When do we think gyms will be opening up again?

Had time off training when I was down in London and then over Christmas when I had the COVID but thankfully didn't lose much strength at all from the virus. Was 5-6 weeks off so will take 3-4 to get back to where I was I think if progress keeps going as it is. Pavel 5x5 scheme has been my savior the past year.

Off to see a neurologist soon as I can still barely walk, nevermind lift. So, going well...

Bag of gooseberry fool here. Largely inactive, halfheartedly doing 30 minutes of basic barbell movements (without a rack or bench) every few days, desperately hoping not to lose too much by the time the gyms are back open but finding it impossible to build up the motivation required to do much about it.

Wouldn't expect gyms to open till April. Vaccinate the gym staff and members!

Been doing monotonous daily government walks of roughly 5 miles every day since 30th November. Usually get around 10,000 to 13,000 steps done. It's actually very good for my mood but definitely lacks the joy of picking up heavy gooseberry fool and then putting it back down.

Body weight down 5.9kg since starting it (also been strict with the diet).

Don't have any weights at home to train with (I'm a humble proletariat with no garage or garden or spare room) so have been doing push ups but since I bench 100kg (or did ) they're hardly a sufficient substitute.

Sorry to hear that, sounds awful! I actually looked into SARMs to help with my slipped disc when the pain was at its worst and the recovery felt like a never ending process.

Working out with my 'bottles of water in buckets' system is going strong, for the most part. Was getting back into running after a 3 week break over Christmas, but it snowed again at the weekend get so I'm waiting for the ice to melt. Hopefully it'll be gone in the next day or so and then I've only lost another week another being back for 2. Put on about 4kg over Christmas, but lost 2 of it again. Want to lose about another 6, which I'm hoping to do by around Easter or so.

I have no intention of going to a gym any time soon after lockdown ends. I ended my membership in autumn and haven't been since march. I do miss swimming and proper weights, but I do like working out at home even if the equipment is gooseberry fool. I'll certainly be looking at home gym options when I get my own place, if I have the space.

Sucks to hear you're still having such a difficult time Roc, hopefully things will start to improve soon for you.

Didnt realise SARMs was a thing which could potentially help!

I'm a beast at planks now at least, got the 8 minute long bear plank down to try and strengthen my core.

Think I'm down about 10kg too but that's somewhat intentional- lean for my back and covid was the plan.

I'm looking at buying a house over here with a garage, which would immediately be getting kitted out with pull up/dip bars.

Was definitely optimistic when looking to be lifting again in Jan - think my days of squats and deads are over for good. Still trying to work out exactly the issue, potentially some form of arthritis in my lower back along with a fractured spinal bone and herniated L5/S1. Trying to sort surgery now as physio hasn't been working but playing it a little by ear.
