PostGRhelp: Xbox 360 controllers not working
by ITSMILNER » Fri May 08, 2020 1:36 pm

I dug out my old 360 console this morning and I have 2 controllers. I have tried batteries in both of them but neither and turning on at all. They have been keep in a plastic storage box securely so they won’t have gotten damaged but both of them are having the same issue.

Is this something common on 360 controllers? Any ideas what the issue could be/how to fix them?

Have you had any battery leaking? I had some very minor corrosion in the battery boxes of mine, meaning they just wouldn't work. I ordered some aftermarket direct replacements for something like a few pounds from Amazon and now they work perfectly.

Edit: these ones:

The controllers never had any batteries in them when I packed them away. I’ve had a look at the battery oacks and they both look clean.

Having a look on YouTube it seems it might be issues with the connectors? I’m trying a trick involving putting a bit of paper or tin foil in the little hole where the battery pack connects to the controllers connector. It starts to light up a little bit but then dies out again

I shouted really loudly at mine when that happened, and I think the vibrations might have shaken some dust loose somewhere deep inside the controller. Still didn’t work, but I felt better. Have you got a play & charge cable?

I used to but can’t for the life of me find it so I’ll order one on eBay and see if that helps.

For what it's worth, none of my XBox 360 controllers work without a play-and-charge kit nowadays - I've had to buy three of them. Perhaps it's just a natural part of their lifecycle...or the end of it.

This is what those battery backs I ordered fixed. I'd say to just order those and see if it fixes it, it's only £4 odd and you may get your controllers working again. Mine were bound for the bin and now they work perfectly.

Just to update in case anyone ever has the same issue. These new battery packs worked perfectly and the controllers are up and running again

Cheers for the heads up!

Having issues with my controllers, assumed it was batteries but issue keeps happening even after replacing them. The controllers will almost constantly lose connection, so I'll be playing then the controller will lose connection, i'll wait a bit then it will connect again, then about 30 seconds later it disconnects again. Very frustrating, especially when playing online.

Was this the issue you had? Or was it different?

My issue was the controllers would not switch on and it appeared to be an issue with the connection between the actually battery pack and the controller
