Dipped into Pedz stream just now, you're ticking along nicely!

And I can't believe you've reached your final stream Aaron! Of course if for some reason you don't finish it this time then it may turn out to be your prey-nultimate stream! :slol:

Have only had a few sessions on this, have just entered the Crew Quarters.

Wasn't sure about it at first, the setting and everything is great but it felt like I was getting rinsed by everything. Maybe I'm bad at stealth or the stealth is just unforgiving, I kept getting spotted very quickly and then have two or three Phantoms in my face. And then I was just getting the hang of it, had some upgrades and stuff to handle things and now Nightmare... :dread: I did google it but how much of a thing is this for rest of the game? I'm not sure I can handle or want the stress. :fp:

I can't decide if I like the fact there's so many options to get into places you 'shouldn't' or not. It is cool that you can sometimes brute force or find alternate paths to get into rooms but at the same time I feel I'm constantly wasting my time trying to get in somewhere before either giving up or getting in and finding not much.

It pops up here and there but I found wasn't a huge deal. Nowhere near as bad as Mr X in Resi 2. You'll get a sidequet which can help you deal with it too, but after the first few encounters I never found it a huge deal.

I finished this game over the weekend. Loved it. Like you Edd I initially felt a bit overwhelmed by the choices and discouraged at how weak I was at the beginning but I am very happy I powered through. Will write up my thoughts a bit later!

You're definitely supposed to be under powered compared to the enemies in the earlier stages, it's not a game about fragging everything you meet but choosing your battles and using your wits to survive by getting creative with your tools and the environment (I'm pretty sure the difficulty selection screen basically says "you'll need to use your wits to survive"!)

Stealth is a powerful tool in this, but the enemies aren't dumb - if you're in their line of sight then expect them to notice. But sticking to cover, using the generous vertical scope of the areas to stay above them, and looking for vents or other paths to avoid encounters are all valid tactics. You can upgrade stealth to make your character harder to detect which makes all of this easier, as well getting upgrades which make any stealth attacks you do on unaware enemies increasingly damaging - this can be very handy to get kills on enemies that would otherwise be too powerful. Stun gun or Gloo cannon to stop them in their tracks before hitting them with other weapons is also a very useful technique. As is setting traps with explosives or grenades

The openness of the game and options for exploring places that you haven't been directed to are one of the best things for me personally - I find it very rewarding to find a way into a space that seems at first glance to be off limits or optional, there are usually some form of in game rewards for doing it but yeah sometimes it's just the sense of accomplishment! If you're worried about wasting time then you can stick to the guidance from the quests and markers but I'd say it's still worth poking about at the sides to an extent as you'll find more useful resources and story background that way.

As for the Nightmare: it turns up sporadically once you first meet it, you can either kill it or just wait for it to go away (or ignore it and carry on your business quickly before it can get you!) If you do decide to take it on then it's not actually that hard to kill, but it's projectile attack can be very powerful so just watch out. You get a lot of rare crafting material if you do kill it though so there is a bonus for taking it on! The frequency with which it appears is linked to how you've been playing the game but I won't say more at this point! As Aaron says there is also a quest you can do to help deal with it.

I think, THINK, I'm getting close-ish to the end. I need to speak to some new guy who has shown up, the issue is the more I have played the more the less I'm enjoying it. I really getting frustrated and I guess the mods I've chosen or just the gameplay style. I dunno, but I'm tempted to sack it off, though I don't want to drop a GRplayde game.

That's a shame man. Sorry I've not been able to drop into your last few streams to offer any encouragement!

You are relatively close to the end though :)

I'm not a million miles from that point myself, I did the station reboot on my last session and I'm now deciding whether to mop up side activities or to just head straight down the critical path. I could probably have finished by now but I've been wanting to get it on stream and haven't had a chance over the last week. Hopefully I can get back on and stream the final sections soon

IIRC there's a point where you can finish the game early, with a private escape shuttle or something which you can get the key for, or carry on for a long time after and do a lot more missions.

Yeah that's the "fake ending" effectively, you can do it really quickly if you know what you're doing!

What happens if you do that by the way? I was enjoying the game a lot so didnt want it to end and ignored it.

It's essentially a Game Over, but you do get some unique dialogue from Alex who basically says he can't believe you're just giving up and then it kind of half gives away the plot by showing some Looking Glass text over your screen and real world Alex saying something along the lines of "the simulation failed, let's try again". I may be misremembering and to be fair I don't think most players will work out the twist from it, but it's still a risk!

It's definitely cool that the game gives you to option to follow this path though!

I promised myself I’d give this game a second chance this year after giving up on it early a few years ago, and once you get over how difficult and clumsy the combat is then there’s a hell of a game in here. If I hadn’t googled where to find the shotgun it still might have been a bit too much, but I’ve silenced my footsteps, learned to crouch, looked up for places to climb, and got the combat focus power - seems to be doing the trick!
So I’m loving how open it is - sort of - and on the way back from doing a side mission waaaay back in the simulation area I came across a couple of departments I could actually access, I must have found the key code for some sort of volunteer living quarters - pitch black, mucho tense. The other one I’ve managed to access is through my mad vent crawling skills is Fabrication, but I have a question - will the main plot bring me here anyway, and if not, is it worth exploring?

Yes Buffalo, always good to see someone getting into Prey! :toot:

The combat isn't necessarily the strongest point of the game, in terms of comparison to genuine FPS/shooter games where that element of the gameplay is the be-all and end-all of the experience, but it has huge scope for experimentation, improvisation and cascading effects that those other games don't support so I think it's very enjoyable in its own way! A key thing to remember is that you are a single, relatively weak human up against a station full of powerful aliens that - certainly at the beginning of the game - have you very much outgunned. You need to think of ways to tip the balance in your favour through using the environment to your advantage, using stealth to avoid combat, using tools in unexpected ways etc.

Fabrication and Volunteer Quarters are both relatively small areas that you get sent to for a couple of side quest activities, but as with everything in this game it's always useful to explore areas at your own pace and not just because some quest is sending you there! Often you will find useful upgrades or items, or maybe codes for other areas which will help you out, or fabrication plans that will allow to craft things that give you the upper hand etc. Exploration is usually a good idea basically!
