Welcome boys and girls, today I want to tell you a tale about a man with a cat head who is on a space station or something and has to kill inky blobs of inky stuff.

On a more serious note, welcome to the GRpreyde thread, we'll be playing Prey which was made in 2017. It was developed by Arkane Studios and was released on PC, PS4 and Xbox One and is also playable on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. Anyone who wants to take part is more than welcome to join in, we'll be playing at our own paces and chatting in the thread with sensible use of spoilers so as not to spoil the game for those playing through for the first time. If you want to take part you simply have to play the game and chat along if you want. There are no rules to how you play the game, just get stuck in and have fun.

The game was suggested by Jenuall, he's the cat man.

I personally will be playing this twice a week and streaming it to http://www.twitch.tv/grcadeuk for anyone who wants to tune in and have a chat and see some gameplay.

Started earlier tonight. It'd a fun setup and doesn't dilly-dally for too long. Going to watch the No Clip doc tonight to get me more in the mood.

Might stream some too, if anyone is interested.

Started today as well, going on Easy because that's how I go these days.

I've never really gotten on with the Arkane type gameplay before but will see how it goes.

Some tips/advice for anyone interested:

It's not an FPS!
You're not a space marine so you're going to need to mix it up a bit beyond just shooting. Don't expect to go in blasting everything and win - not from the start of the game at least. Avoiding detection, getting the drop on enemies, using the environment to your advantage... there are many ways to get through Talos 1 beyond just unloading your cartridges :datass:

Explore!
The station is a big place with lots to find if you poke your nose in the right places - maybe there's an alternate safer route to where you need to be? Or a secret stash of equipment? Perhaps you'll discover a code that helps you out later? Good things come to those who are nosey!

Experiment!
Well you are a scientist after all! Many of the tools, equipment and powers you will find throughout the game will have more uses beyond the obvious headline for them. Play about with things and see if something that initially seems pointless can suddenly become very helpful in the right circumstances!

Recycle!
It's not just good for the environment, it's good for you! Pretty much everything you can find on the station can be recycled to give you useful crafting material - this can be very helpful in getting you enough equipment to start taking control over the enemy. So get recycling and turn the crews old cigars and banana peels into those all important shotgun shells!

Play it your way!
There are many kinds of "builds" for your character in this game, and many ways that you can tackle each challenge the game presents - none of these are right or wrong so just find your own style and enjoy it! :D

Beyond that I would also recommend turning off objective markers (or at least not tracking objectives all the time) - Talos 1 is such a brilliantly designed space that (in my opinion) offers so much more enjoyment if you explore and discover it for yourself, rather than just following an on screen marker!

Good tips, cheers. I'll probably leave the objective markers on, as I have a tendency to go off and explore anyway. Only yesterday I was playing SW Jedi: Fallen Order, and the game lightly nagged me to go a certain way. But there were some caves I wanted to check out, so off I went. But I still like to keep in mind what the next main objective is.

I'll be starting this some time this week, but I might have to stop again if I find it incompatible with simultaneously playing Fallen Order. Hopefully the first/third person view will be enough to keep them distinct.

Yes, thanks for those tips!

Downloaded this last night, so looking forward to playing it now.

Typically, I like structured games where I know where I'm supposed to be going, for fear of missing out on things. Sounds like I might need to play the opposite way to rinks, or I'll literally just go to the next objective and not explore at all.

The only thing I'm not so keen on, in general, is resource management, so that might be the bit that throws me. I'm always worried I've just wasted my last bullet firing at the wrong thing and I'll be stuck. Sounds like the don't play it as an FPS advice might be for me!

Edit, just loaded it up and will be starting it shortly!

Enjoyed streaming some of the early areas of this earlier, despite a couple of annoying crashes (which has never happened to me before, not sure if the game wasn't getting along with my streaming setup!)

I've gone for the Hard difficulty and with the "survival" options turned on which adds a bit more challenge to things! Playing on stream was an interesting consideration for a game like this as I think it made me a bit more "gung ho" than I ordinarily would have been!

Got about 45 minutes on this so far (so very early in it) but the atmosphere is great so far, no idea if it’s meant to lean a little into the horror genre but it definitely has a feeling of unease as you explore.

Slight spoiler/neat thing I noticed at the start,

I was thinking it was rather sloppily put together in the lighting department as shadows/textures kept popping in and out on the helicopter ride between buildings, but it turned out it was just a poorly optimised simulation.

Already past the opening credits in Prey. :datass:

Shortly after switching it on, I had the horrible realisation that I'd played it already on the PS4, or rather, got stuck within 5 minutes, went round and round in circles and then abandoned it and traded it in.

So, it's already going better this time round. I honestly think there must have been a glitch in the version I played first time.

I don't think these things that follow are spoilers as they're literally the first things you do and I'll keep it vague, but the first task is just to get on to a helicopter.

Last time, try as I might and despite going around and around it pressing every button, I couldn't get onto it first time round. It just wouldn't let me in, so I just gave up straightaway.

Things I like so far this time;

- hitting things with a spanner
- being able to get on the helicopter
- reading the various notes scattered about
- working out how to not go round in circles and actually start playing it

Things I don't

- picking up various rubbish in case it's useful later on, but then worrying if I'll run out of room to carry more of it
- the initial tutorial tests
(I didn't want to let the scientists down by messing them up)

I must admit after playing through the intro I was worried I couldn't be arsed to do this again. But dived back in for a bit more this evening. I forgot how immediately brilliant the game as it opens up. Combat is as ropey as I remember but exploration and customisation is fantastic. I'm going to max my Scientist levels before doing anything else and see how it effects the game. Will be interesting to see what builds others go for.

For me the quality of the combat lies very much about how you engage with enemies, and the wealth of options that there are for that - sneak attacks, laying traps, setting up enemies against each other, using the environment to your advantage, using various powers against the enemies etc. The straight up "point weapon at enemy and make it go bang" side of it in isolation is definitely not the strongest though, that's for sure.

Putting points into the Security side of things can make the basic combat more fun though. "Combat Focus" is a good skill to get, and an upgraded shotgun in the right hands is a very formidable and satisfying weapon!

Whereas I really hope there is an option to simply deploy larger and larger spanners

Played some more of this last night, I'm up to the Psychotronics area now, which is a really good section of the game.

So far I've been reasonably thorough in my exploration of the areas of the station that are available, including getting into one or two places that they don't expect you to visit for a while :datass:

Speaking of which, for anyone who watched that bit of my stream yesterday:

I managed to get this door open with the Nerf gun in the end! :toot:

Image

It's definitely one of my favourite tools in the game, so many uses! :D

The freedom that the game offers is one of the strongest elements for me, there are so many ways to get past obstacles, whether that's finding a way around a locked door or tackling an enemy that otherwise has you overpowered, you can really get creative and find some alternative solutions depending on what skills you have and the tools available around you in the world.

Playing on Hard has definitely forced me to find some more tactical approaches as the enemies have grown stronger. I was wasting way too much shotgun ammo for this early in the game so decided to take more advantage of the station's healthy supply of Explosive Canisters:

I never thought to use that toy gun for anything other than testing cans to see if they were mimics :fp:

Goes to show the importance of conveying the interactivity of an environment. I must have been more in a game head space rather than trying to think of things in a real world way and experimenting.

My list of games I want to play right now is starting to get a bit overwhelming, but this has definitely been one I've wanted to play for some time and playing the game at the same time as others is something I don't really get to experience much these days. Count me in! Might start a bit slow as I'm still finishing off Fallout 4 and just seen I need to play Katana Zero before it leaves Game Pass in 10 days.

There's definitely a barrier that needs to be broken down in terms of getting players to think in a more open way about how they interact with the game and that the world is more responsive than your average Call of Warfare stuff.

I think they do a pretty good job of this though, there are quite a few sections which are designed to highlight how much utility the game offers, either through direct demonstration, environmental details, or just simply through notes/emails explaining things

For example very early on you find your first GLOO gun and the whole scene is setup to demonstrate quite a few things: there's a frozen Mimic covered in GLOO which tells you the gun can be used to stick down enemies, there's a load of GLOO creating a path up the wall to a dead body point of interest which has a big light shining on it to hopefully get the player thinking "hmm interesting, this thing can be used to climb up stuff!". This is then reinforced in a few places later, GLOO used to block up doors and windows, GLOO blobs in suspicious places on walls below vents to climb into, there's even a scene you can watch play out where someone who is still alive is running away from a Phantom and uses a GLOO gun to create a path up a wall before they get killed off.

Similarly things like the Recycler Charge get sort of "instructional environmental setups" like this - there's a holding pen in the Ballistics Lab where they're doing R&D on the Recycler Charge, inside the pen are a couple of Mimic's and some other things like boxes. You can press a button to release a charge into the pen which not only kills the Mimic's but also turns the boxes into recycled material - hopefully showing the player how the Recycler Charges can be used to remove obstacles in the world.
