But the vast majority of the game wasn't "from da hood shite", was it?

EDIT: oh, you didn't properly play the game, never mind.

Nope, it got crazy before that. Last few missions of the first islands onwards. And I didn't find the hood stuff boring at all, it was a refreshing change and something that hadn't really been explored in a game before. It's interesting how many people had a problem with the hood setting and characters.

It's odd but to be expected a little bit. I remember on here (well...Gamesradar) when it was out people whinging "all it is is shitty In Da Hood music" despite there being a huge variety in music. I think people just had a problem with it because they don't like hip hop music or something. I dunno.

I'm pretty sure there were a few people that blatantly said they didn't like playing as a Black dude. You're right about the music though - the radio station had way more beyond rap music (classic rock to country music) the way some people reacted you'd think the game only let you listen to the Rap station

I just think it's one of those lazy things to say when talking about San Andreas "oh i didn't like the in da hood theme" when as Mafro pointed out, it's only a very small portion of the game that revolves around that and even then you're breaking into army bases and trying to hi-jack trains.

I liked San A however it was too big for me. I agree with one of the above comments where if you lose your vehical in the middle of nowhere you had to run for miles to find something decent.

The Gang Territory missions I didn't like but I did remember liking the dancing in the clubs

They're both great games and you are allowed to like them both.

The funny thing is, as I'm sure anyone will tell you, is that I'm one of the biggest GTA fanboys on the forum. The fact remains that Vice City was far too small and filled with far too much beach. Great soundtrack, though.

Did people feel like Vice City was too small when they actually played the game before the arrival of San Andreas or is it more of a retrospective viewpoint?

I didn't however what I loved most was the 80's feel and Scarface storyline!

No I thought that in comparison to GTA 3 at the time of playing it.

I noticed it back then, too. Even though it was supposedly bigger than Liberty City in GTA3, it felt smaller. It felt like there were fewer streets, with bigger buildings between them, a giant-assed airport and a massive beach taking up space.

Vice City was too small at the time too. You could drive across it in less than a minute, load screen not withstanding.

I wonder how much of that was down to the dev time they had on Vice City? I mean I know it came out a year or so after GTA 3 but does anyone know how long they actually spent on the game in terms of actual dev time? Same goes for San Andreas as well.

I played it upto Vegas, so I did "play it properly"

Personally it bored me shitless. Cared about none of the characters bar going "oh cool it's Claude" when he appeared. Even GTA IV had more memorable characters (Brucie 8-) )

But to say Vice City was too small or dull is just wrong. Far superior music, far superior characters and far superior story (bar the awful Driver mission :x :x :x :x :x ). The worst part about SA was the boring countryside, eurgh.

I thought the beach was big at the time, but I don't recall it being quite so massive.
