No, we seem to have developed a trend of randomly applying titles to people who ask for them as a joke, but we fundamentally feel that people would have, or feel they deserve, or project, the idea of special treatment if we indicate who does (and therefore does not) make any financial contribution. And I will confirm it has lead to people blackmailing us in the past, even when this isn't public information! It has also lead to people making unfounded claims of special treatment based on somehow figuring out or guessing that somebody contributes in this way.

It also has tax implications because you're explicitly getting something specific in return for the money (that you don't already get) which counts a perk/service/moniker/elevated privilege or anything of the sort.

It also suggests that people that spend money or are capable of doing that are different than people who just post, which is just as if not more valuable. I don't want to create a divide like that, no matter how small.

Maybe I'm biased and couldn't myself afford to support something like GRcade if I wasn't already doing that, but I think the points above are fair and have been echoed by other staff and members - it's not just me.

It might be in jest and not seem important but it raises an important question and there are effects from doing that which detract from the whole thing and ruin it for everyone else.

We could do it anyway but I would bet both my nipples that somebody will come along to say "but I donate this much every month and you didn't warn this guy when he said a thing as mean as my thing, thereby subtly admitting I was mean but I pay so yes you should consider that, I am so upset about this warning I WON'T PAY anymore"

We've had a really positive reception so far! Thanks for taking the time to vote.

At the current time, if everyone who has voted carries out the contribution level indicated, the voluntary funding would stand at:

> £1 level - 7 people - Equates to £7 per month
> £2 level - 14 people - Equates to £28 per month
> Total - 21 people - Equates to £35 per month; and £425 per year
> Plus further ad-hoc funding of TBC by 6 people

The vote runs through to early Saturday morning, so we will get a better picture at that time.

It does seem like direct debit is a popular option for this, and this is how it would work:


How we will handle direct debit contributions

• You would receive a secure link via PM to set up your direct debit to the amount you want to contribute.
• You would be notified by e-mail each time your direct debit is due to go out, in case you have any potential cashflow problems, like sensitive overdraft arrangements
• You can change the direct debit amount at any time by getting in touch with me preferably 7 days before it is due to go out, so that I can update your arrangement
• You can cancel the direct debit at any time by contacting your bank, visiting a branch, via your online banking "outgoing payments" or "direct debits" section, or asking me to cancel it on your behalf
• Funds will be drawn from your account at 12am on the day it is due to go out, and will reach us in 2 days.

Good to know

• Your funds are handled entirely by your bank and the recepient bank (Nationwide), and is administered by GoCardless (A UK company registered with the FCA), and Xero (A New Zealand company that offers accounting software to over one million businesses)
• No credit or debit card details are stored, and this information can't be used by anyone else to draw money from your account. There are no passwords.
• If you contact me within 7 days of the amount leaving your account, I will be happy to refund your amount in full for that month. Because it is likely to have already been spent, I cannot refund amounts older than 7 days except under exceptional circumstances and if we can cover the shortfall caused by that decision.
• You can also use this system to make a one-off contribution, with the benefit that your details will not be recurrently stored by anyone, you will not need to provide any credit or debit card information, and your amount will still be protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee
• We only lose 1% of your transaction to the processing fee, which is just 30% what PayPal charges for the same thing. While PayPal can accept payments for non-profit purposes at 0%, it comes with significant administrative overheads due to the way that PayPal works. This is the best way to ensure your payment to a non-profit isn't squandered by a for-profit institution, or at least as little as possible, and creates minimum work for us. It also carries the least risk that your money will be randomly withheld by a credit/debit card payment processor to "investigate risk", such as suspected fraud or money laundering, which really isn't something we need to deal with!

I will also set up a payment gateway for one-off payments, and possibly recurring subscriptions, using a debit or credit card (so for example you might get perks from using your credit card for this), however that may come at an extra cost to us which I'll need to check out. This will also accept PayPal, should you prefer.

For those that wish to set up a standing order with their bank, you can do this using the same details, with the benefit it won't cost anybody a thing to do it (other than what you spend, obviously). You can send ad-hoc payments that way too if you like, using a standard online banking transaction (Bacs). I want to make this as easy as possible for everyone.
