I played online a lot more than singleplayer, anyway

That means interacting with real people though :dread:

Online is absurdly lucrative for Rockstar, they've nailed the microtransaction aspect and GTA5 has printed money for them this generation. They obviously went for similar with Red Dead but I don't think it stuck as well. Which didn't matter because GTA is still doing ridiculously well.

They'll release GTA6 this generation and will port to it the next generation most likely and that will be it. This is their model now.

I'm not sure if you're joking or not, but I have no interest in online gaming, so I'd take a single player GTA 6 over online any day.

I’m not joking no. The GTA V single player DLC is accessed through GTA online. That’s how the single player works now.

It’s the fortnite model

What?!

Yeah, I'm not bothering with GTA6 then. I really disliked RDR2 anyway so I'm not fussed.

I remember launching up RDR2 online having read about all the different activities on there, and thought it sounded great, a chance to play the big cowboy simulator without having to slog through 80 hours of Rockstar story and missions, but almost every activity was walled off behind premium currency. Having to buy a permit with gold bars to start any of the tracks for progression, was the most egregious cash grab possible, so back to single player it was.

There will be a female protagonist

The game will feature a playable female protagonist for the first time, according to people familiar with the matter. The woman is Latina and will be one of a pair of leading characters in a story influenced by the bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde. Developers are also being cautious not to “punch down” by making jokes about marginalized groups, the people said, in contrast with previous Grand Theft Auto games.

The game’s release is likely two years away

Industry analysts anticipate that the next Grand Theft Auto will be out sometime in Take-Two’s 2024 fiscal year, which runs from April 2023 through March 2024, but developers are skeptical. The game has been in development in some form since 2014. Although there are loose schedules in place, people interviewed for this article said they didn’t know of any firm release date and that they expect the game to be at least two years away. Earlier this year, a group of designers quit Rockstar’s Edinburgh office, telling colleagues they were sick of the lack of progress.

Rockstar wanted to include large portions of North and South America but had to be reeled in

Original plans for the title, which is code-named Project Americas, were for it to be bigger than any Grand Theft Auto game to date. Early designs called for the inclusion of territories modeled after large swaths of North and South America, according to people familiar with the plans.

The new map is a fictionalized Miami but will update over time

The game’s new map is now focused on a fictional version of Miami and its surrounding areas. Rockstar’s plan is to continually update the game over time, adding new missions and cities on a regular basis, which leadership hopes will lead to less crunch during the game’s final months.

In development since 2014 and won't even be finished at launch, 10 years later

A modern day Miami doesn't excite me in the slightest (it's always America!), but if it were to span multiple decades (like Driver Parallel Lines did with New York) I'd be interested.

It's ok, Duke Nukem Forever took 14 years, and that was a masterpiece.

It's not the first time you could play as a female protagonist. In GTA 1 even though the in game avatar always looked the same there were several female options for the character portrait.

If its true that Rockstar have undergone a major culture change and restructure internally and the staff are now treated much better, and cruch has been reduced than that is a fantastic sign for the industry. If someone that big can achieve that than any of the big developers can.

I've no issue with the game taking forever to come out if this story is true and that's one of the factors.

The article I posted suggested a change of tone and direction for GTA6. Hopefully that's true because the kinda stuff the tweet is criticising is extremely outdated now.
