Jamie King, one of the founders of Rockstar Games alongside Sam Houser, Dan Houser and Terry Donovan, has shared his thoughts on how the Grand Theft Auto games will change owing to the different directions that the studio has taken in recent years.

After all of the clamouring for modern remasters of GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas, it’s a shame that the Definitive Edition left a lot to be desired. Rockstar Games is addressing the numerous issues in the trio of titles though they are racing against modders who’ve taken matters into their own hands. Still, amongst this torrent of annoyance from fans who hoped that the remasters would tide them over until the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, players reckon there is a nod to the next game in the photographs at the Lil Probe Inn.

Check out a compilation of the very best wins and fails in Grand Theft Auto V!

It’s tough to tell when we’ll get our first glimpse at the next game in the classic series or what it will look like. Whispers on the wind say that it will return to Vice City, either in the present day or in the ‘80s, and that it will feature its first female protagonist. One notorious industry insider expects that Grand Theft Auto VI will arrive in 2025, which was surprising, before we got a scoop that the development of the game has been a shambles.

Well, while we add these tidbits to the pile of what we do and don’t know about the future of Grand Theft Auto, an interview with one of the founders of Rockstar Games might offer some more concrete insight to the next entry. In an interview with Killaz, a Grand Theft Auto-centric YouTube channel, Jamie King shed a little light on what he imagines the next game to be like in terms of tone.

“It's the same engine, right, that I worked on when I was there, the core of it. It’s the same content,” said King of the plausible experience of playing the new game. “They’ve really perfected the systems so I’d be surprised if, like, gameplay mechanics really got affected.” King also added that the support that Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online lends the studio means that the teams aren’t in a rush to reveal the next game.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if the tone starts changing, and if it’s maybe not quite as edgy or quite as funny. I just think that maybe there’s more opportunity for them to do something cheesy because they never do,” continued King. “And maybe not, right? Again, there’s a beautiful machine there that you’d have to try really hard to f*ck up. I just look at the success of [Grand Theft Auto] V Online, and [Red Dead] Redemption 2, and I’m like, ‘They’re just gonna be fine, period.’ But, you know, I think culturally, internally, both at North and New York missing Leslie and Dan, yeah there’s a difference for sure.”

Whilst I don't see this being likely, I guess its possible, wasn't Red Dead Redemption 2 the only new game release in the previous gen? Suppose with GTA online they no longer need or desire to make multiple games.

GTA 5 came out in 2013 and this is likely to release in 2025? The online must be printing them money still so guess they don’t have loads of need to rush the next one out, wonder what will come out first, GTA 6 or TES 6!

Not that I’ll be likely to buy GTA 6 anyway…..

How can they only have one game in them considering how much staff they gave, how big the company seemingly is? RDR2 was a monster aye, but come on.

Makes sense to me. 5 years seems to be pretty standard for a big game like this now. So 2023 would have been when it was expected before the Covid disruption. I think Bethesda are the same, and Elder Scrolls VI will be crossgen with the Series X and the next Xbox.

IV was underwhelming and I couldn't get on with V which just seemed crap even after getting it free from Epic so I really couldn't give a gooseberry fool if they never release more in all honesty

RDR2 was last generation’s only Rockstar game, so not exactly a huge shock.

can't say i'm surprised by that but then they have alienated a lot of their original fans with the way they have only cared for GTA Online and not bothering with DLC content and soley focused on that.

GTA is online now so I don't suppose many here would want to play a GTA6 when it eventually drops anyway

I have loved the gameworlds in GTA games; the cities are fun to drive around and, particularly in V, the level of detail and tech performance is terrific.

I can't stand stand the missions, though - I find them tedious and frustrating. The opening section of V was so poor, IMHO; being thrust into a shooting section with wonky controls, I was glad once it was over and I could then just grab a car and go explore. That's how I play GTA games; driving vehicles up big hills whilst listening to the radio.

I'm not sure if you're joking or not, but I have no interest in online gaming, so I'd take a single player GTA 6 over online any day.

I havent played a single second of GTA online nor do I ever want to, a brand new single player GTA campaign I would be all over. Im in the minority with that but theres definitely an appetite for a new GTA campaign. Im still salty there was no single player heist DLC when online became as big as it did.

100% this.

I was genuinely surprised when a colleague (mid-twenties, for context) said that GTAV was one of his favourite ever games but later remarked that he hadn't tried the single-player.

Considering how much money they made on 5 it makes sense to put everyone they have on 6.
I imagine the sheer amount of post-launch DLC that will be being worked on in the year before launch will be huge.

I think a key issue is that they made millions on GTA V... but multi-millions on the Online game. From a purely financial perspective, I suspect that the bosses and shareholders are thinking "let's make VI a brief experience and focus on updating and expanding Online". Which, of course, sucks.

GTA online is the same map as the singleplayer, with pretty much the same controls and gameplay mechanics, where you can still steal cars, run over pedestrians and get in benny hill car chases - there are differences, obviously, but surely if you like GTAV's singleplayer you would find aspects of the online enjoyable too?

I played online a lot more than singleplayer, anyway

Absolutely, Orange - I suspect most people did and that's why I feel Online will get more focus during future iterations; much like, say, Call of Duty did. Potentially there's far more profit with the Online mode.
