This just popped up on reddit.

have two friends who are very reliable and have worked for places such as Kotaku and PC Gamer. They relayed this information to me. I also have a very dear friend who works for Rockstar, he won’t confirm the details, but he won’t deny them either. Normally, if something is not true, he’ll flat out deny, but here he just laughed and said “you know I can’t talk about that stuff bro” sooooooo :) I think we’re gold boys!

The next GTA title has been in development since 2012 (1 year before GTA 5 launched). Production didn't actually pick up properly until mid 2015. Even then it was on ice while the teams focused on RDR2.
It's another Rockstar Worldwide Production, not just one or two studios, but all.
Codename is PROJECT AMERICAS.
Set in both Vice City and a new fictional location based on Rio de Janeiro, with some linear missions taking place in Liberty City (not open world), think Ludendorff in GTAV. Also been recently hearing about Cuba but I ain’t sure?
Game will balance realism and arcade. WON'T be as realistic as RDR2.
One playable protagonist this time. Male, not female, despite supposed leaks.
Set in 1970s-1980s.
You play as an up and coming drug lord-wannabe named "Ricardo". Another key character called “Kacey” is a part of the narrative. You start off as a grunt doing runs as a cocaine smuggler from Vice City to the new large South American area before making connections with big time drug lords and making your way up. Multiple cities. There will also be a GIANT prison which will play a part in the game.
Will feature a “CHAPTER” system similar to a Tarantino flick or RDR2.
Weather is a heavy focus. Hurricanes, floods, etc.
Buildings change over the eras, vehicles too. This causes headaches apparently but they managed to nail a pipeline and get it working. So older, rare classic cars get more expensive as time progresses etc. Full economy. Next level.
HEAVILY inspired by Netflix's Narcos.
They want to have an incredible 70s/80s soundtrack, but jury is still out on that one.
A younger Martin Madrazo will make an appearance as will his father who is a big drug lord at the time. You do some missions for the Madrazo family involving hits on other gangs.
Drug empire building is a mechanic similar to Vice City Stories but bigger. MUCH bigger. Think the GTAOnline system and dial it up to 10. There you have it.
You can only have weapons on your person. No arsenal in your back pocket. Think RDR2 and Max Payne 3.
Your personal vehicle (similar to GTA5 but can now change it) will be like your horse saddle in RDR2. All your equipment is stored in the trunk. Similar to LA Noire. You also store your body armour in the car. If you wear it, it appears, no longer just an invisible thing lol.
There will be tons of subtitle reading. Think Max Payne 3 amounts. Because the characters speak the language they're native to. Very immersive. Like watching an episode of Narcos. Whenever you're in South America, don't expect to hear much English. Vice City however is a mix of everything. Mostly English though.
Last bit of narrative info, it will discuss topics such as HIV and the immigration crisis of the time. A fictional version of Fidel Castro etc. Though I’ll be PISSED if our protagonist dies from AIDS or some gooseberry fool.
Next Gen only. Not PS4/XB1.
Game is now their primary focus, alongside another title (which I believe to be Bully 2).
Game is still in Pre-Alpha so names, locations, details could and probably will change.
No ETA on a release date.

A GTA game where the player is discouraged from committing GTA?

"Project Americas", Vice City, South America drug runs and female lead (Kacey) were rumoured back in March I believe.

And set in 70s-80s. Basically Narcos: The Video Game. :datass:

I’m so in for that :datass:

Only thing is, shouldn’t the SA location be in Columbia, not Brazil?

True, but according to the above it’s a stand in for Rio, not Rio itself. I guess a Rio type city will be more recognisable to people than Medellín and basically functions as the South American city that everyone knows.

That does absolutely nothing for me at all. Or at least, the idea of all that couched in Rockstar's massively unfunny stylings doesn't. Looking forward to seeing their city tech, but that's about it.

I'm sort of surprised after RDR2 they (probably) won't go with a low-key Midwest or Pacific Northwest crime scene - in the spirit of something like Fargo or Twin Peaks - considering that game's aesthetics.

It'd never happen, but I'd like a game set in 3 time periods set a long time apart, like back to the future. Would be cool to be in the future, then move back 100 years in the same area.

So... an open world game exploring the State of San Andreas within three different time periods, which each offering a vastly different asthetic depending on the period. As long as you're in the DeLorean and can hit 88mph, you'll warp to one of the time periods you aren't currently in, with missions in the past affecting those you'll get in the future.

Could be a fun game that opens up many possible paths to take. But can we please not have the typical going back in time to save the future plot? Or is that inescapable whenever time travel's involved?

I feel torn about the time period if that's true. Loved Vice City but I also loved the modern day GTA V.

Also, game development cycles are getting ridiculous. I remember at this start of this gen I told myself I'd get one of the new consoles when GTA VI/Elder Scrolls VI came out :dread:

Will definitely be over 10 years between ESV and ESVI, and GTA is going to be pretty close to the same gap.

Yes, yes, I know I'm bringing this topic back from the dead with no new information in an official capactiy to be seen, but having looked at the leaks, I once again dove into concepting yet another map (alongside the more detailed version of that Michigan map I posted some month ago). I won't say more out in the open, but the concepted map, a bit more text, and a link to my blog for more details are in the spoiler tag below.

So when I looked at the leaks gathered by Gfinity, I found it interesting that not only would Vice City return, but Central America and South America were set to make their GTA-verse debut. While not in any form of detail, I then set about crafting a map of what all this could look like based entirely upon the geography of those places the leak talks about.

Below is the map in full, along with some text, but if you want to see the full details, you can go to my Concepting the GTA VI Map post of my blog.

Image

As you can see on the map, there are four states/countries that will be included. I've expanded the mention of Vice City out to include a reasonable chunk of Florida to include a few more cities and the Everglades and other national preserves. The People's Republic of Del Castro is a combination of Cuba and Panama, and is said to be an island, so while I made it large enough to be usable and include a few cities on it, it isn't as large as the other two landmasses.

The Republic of Castellano merges both Colombia and Bolivia together, and since both are rather large countries, I wanted to show that while not being too generous in size. The yellow marks the Andean region of Bolivia. Rio de Neve is the GTA version of Rio de Janeiro, which gives a reason for the Amazon Rainforest to be included in the map (despite not being mentioned in the leak).

Now, I should mention that the map is probably not going to be as large as this concept, as while the leak does mention minor cities being a part of the map, I doubt there will be as many as I have included, and I doubt there will be so much empty space, as it appears on my concept, between the various cities. I also expect Florida to just be Vice City and a bit of the Everglades, but that Vice City should at least be greatly expanded on from the 3D era games.

If you have read it, how close do you think this will be to what we get? And yes, it will be set in the 80s.

It's crazy to think that Rockstar didn't release a GTA game for the Xbone/PS4 consoles - the remastered 360/PS3 game is all the current gen got.

The most exciting thing I saw in that article was a rumour that they might be working on Bully 2.

Because as well as being a writer, I'm also a concepter of ideas.

And I just like maps. They're a nice visual aid to follow what's being written.

I like the time travel Idea, it would be bonkers to go from Red Dead to prohibition to 80s excess to modern social media culture and tell the story of one family or gang or something. Its ambitious as hell and would be near impossible to pull off but pulling together all the Rockstar strands would be very cool. Rather than having a time travel story they should bring back some silliness by having an unclockable DeLorean once you finish the main story so you can go back and have a sandbox in each time period. Bring a machine gun to the old west, kidnap someone in the 80s, bring them to prohibiton times, gooseberry fool like that.

Better controls, more humour and a city that is memorable and distinct. This has not happened since Vice City imo.

On a completely unrelated note, Grand Theft Auto Online released on 1st October 2013.
