Was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to recommend a cheap as chips, half decent guitar. I used to own one 10 years ago but never stuck with it. I've been considering getting Rocksmith 2014 to learn with but don't want to waste money if I grow bored.

For a cheap guitar that's also going to actually be playable you can't go wrong with a Yamaha Pacifica. The plus of these is that they're decent guitars so once you get better it's not going to hold you back unlike some shite like a squire strat or a £99 epiphany les Paul junior

By the way you're not going to learn properly with rocksmith. I've got it and I've been playing sine I was 17 and it's got enough things wrong with it that you're going to pick up some awful habits, let alone learning to play with bloody lag introduced

Just get a decent starter guitar, amp and a tab book of your favourite album and go from there. I'd actually say getting a nice acoustic would be better for a beginner than an electric.

+1 for Pacifica 112, my first electric guitar as well.

The 112 is probably the best cheap guitar that is widely available.

My first guitar was a Pacifica pack with an amp. I forgot about that. Followed it up with a Squier Strat (which sounded pretty good contrary to popular belief), a Yamaha AES 420 and now, a Schecter Omen. I'm happy with my Schecter. It didn't cost very much and I feel like it's helping me improve a lot. It's true what Ad7 said, don't buy a really shitty guitar as it will impede your progress a lot. For amps, Roland do some cheap ones. They are not ever going to compare to a good valve amp but they are decent enough. I like my Cube 20X, I've had it for over 5 years (I think). It is a good practice amp.

Failing that, I've heard good things about the Blackstar line of amps.

I almost went with the Pacifica but for some reason I can't remember (possibly couldn't find left-handed version) I ended up getting an Epiphone Special II.

I love it, really good for the price.

Another +1 for Roland Amps, I started with the Micro Cube and later upgraded to a Cube 60x

Yamaha Pacificas are excellent guitars. Also, Fender's Squire range is actually far better than you'd think. It's Fender quality stuff, for peanuts.

Epiphone are the Squire of Gibson, so if you like Gibson guitars, have a look at them.

If you want an acoustic, look at Ibanez, Yamaha and Fender's starter range.

I still have that Squire Strat. The parts are kinda worn down on it and the bridge has a few issues now. I would really love to fix it up but I wouldn't have a clue how to go about it.

Good man, that 112 will be a brilliant first guitar.

I didn't mention, I still actually play mine because it's closer to a strat and has different tones due to the bridge (my other guitar is floating) and single coils.

Just ordered a new Roland Cube because I'm retiring my old one (it is kind of unsafe at the moment, I fear death by electrocution). Got 8 years out of it. I had too many good times Will be good to have an amp that can actually do reverb and delay at the same time. Looking forward to trying all the new features out. Plumped for the 40GX in the end. Seemingly it doesn't have a looper like the previous model which is a bit of a bummer.

Looking into getting a cheap bass as well, maybe in June. Was looking at the Yamaha TRBX304 or the BB424X. A bass amp is another problem, as I know nothing about those.

I have a starcaster there pretty cheap but the sound is not the best.

I got a random metallic red Yamaha RBX374 and Peavy MicroBass in a trade for a DS Phat + 2 games, bit of a bargain really, I rarely play bass although I used to in a band, it's perfect for picking up and laying down some basslines. Here is how it sounds through a virtual amp and a Big Muff:

Pretty full and punchy sound really. It seems to be a bit of a heavy metal bass. dual tone/vol knobs so flexible. The MicroBass is a good little practice amp, used two of them for years and never really felt any need to get something else. Small, portable and plenty of volume with 3 band EQ.

You can't half tell that you ran that through a Big Muff. Sounds heavy and fuzzy. I like it.

Got the Roland Cube 40gx. I have no idea what they did to the Metal Stack but it lacks definition on the bottom end. Used to be able to get some pretty spot on tones with my previous model, made playing along to songs fun. Something is just off about this model. I'm slightly disappointed by it so far. Maybe it will grow on me.
