The Spear of Varatha is still my favourite I think. The radial attack at it's strongest is just unplayable. With Zeus boons you can rattle Hades' first health bar off him in about half a dozen fully charged attacks.

What makes the Zeus boons pair well with it?

Fists > Rail > Bow > Spear > Sword > Shield... maybe. Honestly all of them are good! Early on I'd have put spear top and fists bottom.

Shield will always be top for me because you can just play super aggressive without much risk of being hurt. Plus it has the knockback/wall splats meaning you can use traps offensively, plus aspect of chaos let's you abuse stuff like crits/poison by doing 5 hits simultaneously. It does everything basically.

It screws me over with other charge weapons though, like my muscle memory thinks charge = block and I eat a lot of damage because of it.

What do you guys think is the best fist aspect? I bought the magnet one on switch but I'm enjoying the one that charges up the fist more now

Magnetic or just standard for me. I love pairing knockback with magnetic, constantly pulling in and pushing away in one attack.

Yeah it is pretty fun.

I got the hammer upgrade that lets charge up your uppercut yesterday, combined with the aspect that does extra hits after 12 punches, I was hitting like 900 damage an uppercut. Felt so good :D

I'm so bad with the sword. It's the only weapon I haven't beaten the game with. Anyone got any tips or builds that make it good?

It's the short range/slowness that screws me over. Fists have short range but you don't really need to commit to anything

Going to try getting back into this since the sequel was announced. Just fired it up to see when I had last played it and it was 22 December 2021  going to take some time trying to remember what’s what me thinks

Watched the SwitchUp review of Transistor - certainly comparable with Hades in terms of quality - might try to pick up a physical version if I can but it's pricey.

Bought this on Switch as it’s 50% off at the moment, probably won’t get chance to start it till the new year but considering I’m not a fan of these types of games I’m kind of looking forward to this one. I’ll probably have to read through this thread for some tips when I do start playing, best weapon for a beginner though?

Shield.

Allows you to attack from distance, allows you to charge at enemies, allows you to use the shield as a shield to conserve HP.

The special pairs very well with Dread Flight (Daedalus upgrade) and Ares's Curse of Pain.

I think the sword is the best weapon for a beginner. Pretty sure that's all that's unlocked to start with anyway.

i would have said either the shield or the spear, because of the long range of attacks, dont have to get quite so close.

I like the shield, feels like Captain America flinging it round.

Just did my first run for almost a year, got to the second part of Hades fight but died, still only 1 successful run in total. Used the Railgun on this run, I have upgraded it some with Titan Blood. Going to try another run tomorrow but Switch to the shield.

So sounds like I should use the sword till I get the shield then and see which I prefer?

Honestly the game encourages you to experiment with different builds and boons every run. I'd recommend just picking the weapon that has the bonus on (it glows purple IIRC), which is random each time.

Might be worth you trying God Mode, it starts by giving you 20% damage resistance, every time you die whilst it’s activated adds another 2% on top of that up until a max of 80%. Defo helps getting to grips with the early game.

There's a random modifier that gives you more XP and it lands on a different weapon every time, so when you're starting out it's usually just best to use whatever weapon has that buff on it.

I find the shield the more fun weapon though, it's really versatile. It's charge attack is like a giant dash that blocks EVERYTHING while you're charging it. It's really good for getting used to enemies and bosses because you can just block and see what they do.

It has only taken me over a year to finally play this(!), enjoying it, but can't say I'm the biggest fan of starting right back at the start every time!

The spear has been my favourite so far (liking the backstab on return ability); haven't really got on with the shield as yet. However, actually got the furtherest last night using the rail gun for the first time. Got to Thesus and Asterius, where I beat Asterius and got Thesus to near a quarter health. Making some progress at least!
